Land of Lincoln is between the uprights

Vol kicker closing in fast on freshman FG record

Full event details »

Tennessee kicker Daniel Lincoln isn't moving into the Vols' record books.

He's sprinting.

The redshirt freshman's two field goals against South Carolina not only made him the SEC special teams player of the week, they moved him just two field goals shy of UT's freshman record.

James Wilhoit, Lincoln's predecessor, kicked a record 17 field goals as a freshman in 2003.

With his next kick, Lincoln will move into the top 10 in single-season field goals, joining Jeff Hall, John Becksvoort and Phil Reich with 16.

"I didn't know about that until just now," Lincoln said Monday morning. "I'm looking at names on that list. … It's amazing. I was not aware of that until now. That really hits home."

Lincoln, who has met Alex Walls, Hall and Fuad Reveiz and played with Wilhoit, wasn't aware of his spot in UT history until he saw a list compiled by UT's sports information office.

"To even be mentioned with those guys, that's such an honor," he said. "To have my name on that list, I wonder if I'm even worthy. But that is a huge honor right there."

He could reach even more honors.

Lincoln's 1.88 made field goals per game leads the SEC. If he continues on that pace, he would finish with seven more field goals.

That would rank third all time on UT's single-season list, behind only Fuad Reveiz's 27 in 1982 and Carlos Reveiz's 24 in 1985.

And after Saturday, he's hit a game-winning field goal, too.

"You can't really prepare yourself for a moment like that until you're in it," Lincoln said. "Until you're really there and feel what that's like, that's an unbelievable moment.

"That's not pressure. That's fun."

Young Missed: Count right tackle Ramon Foster among those who will miss Eric Young's presence on the offensive line for the rest of the season.

Young, UT's starting left tackle, underwent season-ending surgery Sunday morning to repair a ruptured quadriceps tendon.

"Eric was a warrior," Foster said. "I think he'll be fine after he rehabs and gets his quad right. It's definitely a big loss for us and something we have to get through and persevere."

Tennessee, which has rotated eight offensive linemen this season, still is in pretty good shape.

Right guard Chris Scott will move to left tackle, where he spent time during spring practice and fall camp.

Jacques McClendon, who has played primarily right guard this season, will start there this week.

"It won't be that much of a dropoff not having Eric down there," Foster said. "Chris has to learn how to play left side better now that he's switched from right to left.

"Having the experience that Jacques has over there and being that we've played a lot together, we should be pretty fine on the right side."

Berry Staying Put: Eric Berry's interception return against South Carolina has some wondering if the true freshman safety might see action at punt returner or even at quarterback.

UT coach Phillip Fulmer has thought about it, but doesn't want to risk Berry at safety in an already depleted secondary.

"He's playing so much defense, and we're so thin back there," Fulmer said. "That's one of those things - how much do you want to roll the dice?

"We've talked about him playing at quarterback a little bit because he did in high school. If we were playing 60, 65 plays or 55 like we used to, we might be more willing to do that."

I'm glad Daniel Lincoln is a Vol, and the Swamp lizards didn't have a scholarship to offer a kid in their own back yard.

That said, as far as I'm concerned, a field goal is a missed touchdown opportunity. I just hope that when the touchdown opportunities fall short that Daniel will continue to be straight and true through the uprights.

Hope you appreciate that, tngeoff. Moron.

On another note - how yummy do those two look in those tight pants! Woo-WEE!

lay off the estrogen shots boys....but it is cute to think of him as "The Beastie of the Eastie!!!"

So, Fulmer doesn't want to risk Berry, but he doesn't mind risking Hefney on punt returns? Does that say something about Hefney or Fulmer?

Yep, double checked, no misspellings in my post. Wait a minute. Is "yep" a word?

Yikes guys. Save the man love for Timmy Tebow.

Fulmer was asked about Berry returning kicks and punts on Vol Calls last night. After reiterating the above quote he also said Berry wasn't catching it well enough in practice.

what's worong with you guys, being tolerant of gay-themed post? What did you say? Oh, you've figured out that more gay guys mean less competition for the cute girls out there???

Damn, I thought I was the only one who had figured that out!

A good challenge from Phil to Berry about catching punts. Berry could be a future Hesman candidate IF he can focus on being a lockdown corner and get the 'other' plays at receiver, qb, punt and kick returns.

Lets just hope we get enough talent to let him roma a bit.

Lincoln should have plenty of opportunities with the way our offense is currently bogging down pretty regularly.

Think about it.......Our defense can hand the ball to the offense at midfield and we pick up 20 yards. Field goal attempt, baby!!!!

Volunatic writes:

I still think they should try Rogan at punt returns. He made a good kickoff return against South Carolina (29 yds), and he had great punt returns in the JV game, too (25 yds and 47 yds).
There also isn't the risk of losing a starting DB in an already-depleted secondary if you go with Rogan.

GreerVol22 writes:

spam, see the 1:00 story on Rogan, you got what you asked for!

Volunatic writes:

Nice! It's definitely worth a try. Go Dennis Rogan!

Volunatic writes:

Sure, tngeoff, but "projections" and "reality" have been two completely unrelated concepts this CFB season for every team out there.
If we lose 2 out of the final 4 games on the schedule (quite possible, but I sure hope it doesn't happen), the Music City bowl is the best bowl that UT would deserve.
If they are in the Music City Bowl, I'll make a day trip to Nashville to holler for UT. If they are in the Liberty Bowl, I'll go to Memphis and eat lots of ribs before I cheer on the Vols.
Right now, I'm hoping for the Vols to pull off a miraculous 7-game winning streak concluded with a Sugar Bowl win (yes, I will go to NOLA if my work schedule permits), but I definitely ain't bettin' the ranch on that. Gotta watch it play out.
For now...
GO VOLS!!! Beat Louisiana Lafayette!

As a UT fan, that couldn't be more accurate.

Projections-Top 15 ranking, competitive in all games, 10 wins, New Year's Day or BCS bowl game.

Reality-In and out of Top 25, blown out in 3 games (2 in conference)(as of October 30), 5 wins (as of October 30), 1-3 road record, mutiple special teams TD's surrendered, feuds with the media, embarrassment on national and regional TV, "The Charts", 21 point halftime lead blown, mid to late December bowl game.

I guess I thought too highly of our program before the season started. Shame on me.
