GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tennessee is more than a touchdown underdog against Florida. It’s playing in The Swamp.
So why do I think this might be UT’s best chance to beat the Gators in the next three years?
Answer: Check Florida’s depth chart. It’s loaded with freshmen and sophomores, particularly on defense.
The Gators start only three seniors and one junior on defense. They also will start just two seniors on offense against UT.
Moreover, many of their most dynamic players — like quarterback Tim Tebow and wide receiver Percy Harvin, for example — are sophomores.
Florida’s freshman class, rated as the best in the country by most recruiting services, will become more of a factor as the season goes along. But cornerback Joe Haden and offensive guard Maurkice Pouncey are already starting.
Florida played 14 true freshmen and 24 overall freshmen in its season opener. That was more than any other team in the SEC.
In two games, Florida already has played 17 true freshmen.
Florida 41, Tennessee 38: Since the SEC went to divisional play in 1992, the winner of this game has won the East 10 times. This year should be no exception.
Georgia already has lost to South Carolina. And the Gamecocks have the toughest conference schedule of any team in the division.
Once past Florida, UT will have three of its four toughest remaining conference games — against Georgia, South Carolina and Arkansas — at home. The Gators still will have to play at LSU and South Carolina.
So the stakes are familiar for UT-Florida. The defenses aren’t.
UT’s defense looked dreadful in an opening-season loss to Cal. Florida’s looked just as bad in the second half of a one-sided victory against Troy.
The only thing that should slow down either offense is an afternoon thunderstorm, and that’s not out of the question.
UT quarterback Erik Ainge needs to have a career day, and he just might. But the Gators have a few more playmakers and The Swamp in their favor.
Arkansas 27, Sabama 24: Advice to Arkansas coach Houston Nutt: Have someone check the sideline for strangers with video cameras.
There’s no evidence Alabama coach Nick Saban has been stealing opponents’ signals. But his mentor is New England coach Bill Belichick.
Of course, you could argue that there’s no point in stealing Arkansas’ offensive signals. Just check the stats and the injury report.
Star wide receiver Marcus Monk is injured and won’t play. No other wide receiver has more than one pass reception this season.
And even if you know tailback Darren McFadden will get the ball, you still have to tackle him.
Louisville 52, Kentucky 41: The passion once confined to basketball is building for the Kentucky-Louisville football game. But if this really is to become a serious football rivalry, a major change has to take place.
Kentucky has to win a game.
The Wildcats offense is capable. And their defense is capable of making an opposing quarterback look like a Heisman Trophy candidate.
Louisville’s Brian Brohm can do that on his own.
South Carolina 45, South Carolina State 7: The Gamecocks are 2-0 and just managed to upset arch-rival Georgia. But don’t the wrong idea.
This team is anything but set.
Quarterback Blake Mitchell has yet to shed his reputation for inconsistency on and off the field. The offensive line seemingly gets reshuffled on a weekly basis.
And finally, coach Steve Spurrier has become so frustrated with his special teams that he’s assigning some of his best players — running backs Michael Davis and Cory Boyd, and linebackers Jasper and Casper Brinkley – to them.
Vanderbilt 27, Ole Miss 24: If Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron set program goals when he was hired, I doubt one of them was: “Be no more than a single-digit underdog to Vanderbilt by our third year.”
Although you can’t tell it by Vanderbilt’s record, the word is getting around that the Commodores are improved. They were only a 3 ½-point underdog last week against Alabama. Now, they’re a five-point favorite at home against Ole Miss.
This is Vanderbilt’s best chance to win a conference game. And it’s Ole Miss’ best chance to win a conference game until it plays Mississippi State in its last game.
The Rebels’ next six SEC games are against Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and LSU. After that, they might be either too beat up or too beat down to beat Mississippi State.
Georgia 48, Western Carolina 7: A Division I-AA team from the Carolinas playing a prominent Division I-A team on its home field: Remind you of anything?
It shouldn’t. Appalachian State, which upset Michigan in the season opener, has a championship-caliber I-AA program. Western Carolina doesn’t.
In fact, the Catamounts have lost 11 consecutive games, including a 45-21 game to Eastern Kentucky last week. Nonetheless, Western Carolina coach Kent Briggs boldly predicted this week, “The streak is going to end.”
He didn’t say when.
Auburn 27, Mississippi State 10: Bulldogs fans should be absolutely giddy over their team’s 38-point outburst in a victory over Tulane last week. For perspective, the Bulldogs have scored only 41 points in the last five games against Auburn.
And it’s getting worse, not better. Auburn has shut out the Bulldogs each of the last two years, winning 34-0 last season and 28-0 in 2005.
The Tigers’ defense might not be good enough to shut out the Bulldogs this time. But it still should work wonders for Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox, who drew the wrath of Auburn fans after playing poorly in an overtime loss to South Florida.
After watching Mississippi State quarterback Michael Henig against Auburn’s defense, fans will leave Jordan Hare Stadium thinking, “Cox isn’t that bad.”
LSU 45, MTSU 7: The second-ranked Tigers have plenty of reasons to have a letdown against the Blue Raiders.
Everyone is saying how great they are after their 48-7 rout of nationally ranked Virginia Tech. Their coach, Les Miles, is being mentioned as the successor to Michigan’s Lloyd Carr. Their quarterback, Matt Flynn, has a bum ankle.
Also, you couldn’t blame them for looking past 0-2 MTSU to next week’s SEC game against unbeaten South Carolina. So they’ll probably give up a touchdown and score under 50 points.
Top 25: Southern Cal 30, Nebraska 17; Oklahoma 52, Utah State 7; Texas 41, UCF 20; Wisconsin 42, The Citadel 13; Cal 45, Louisiana Tech 17; Washington 27, Ohio State 24; UCLA 30, Utah 14; Penn State 41, Buffalo 10; Rutgers 48, Norfolk State 10; Georgia Tech 27, Boston College 23; Virginia Tech 31, Ohio 13; Oregon 42, Fresno State 23; Clemson 42, Furman 14; Hawaii 45, UNLV 31; Texas A&M 45, Louisiana-Monroe 20.
Record: 40-6 (.869) overall, 19-20 (.497) against the spread.

Wow...I really didn't see this prediction coming at all. Everything he's been saying all week had led me to believe he would pick UT. OH WAIT.
DannyVol writes:
Adams wrote that while staring at his Tebow poster.
He has the audacity to tell us how great Florida is all week and then picks his beloved Gators by 3...which is essentially saying it's a toss-up.
What a flaky, dried up and talentless writer.
Go Vols!!! Put Tebow on his freakin' back!!!

What did we really expect? Knowing that this guy is costing them tons of ad revenue and subscription dollars, how the KNS can continue to keep him on the payroll is beyond me. Maybe that's why the Tennessean in the best paper in the state.

why are the words "defense favors florida" in the title of this article? nothing written in it remotely backs up (or even attempts to) that point. if anything, the "information" included refutes it?
who wrote this, a 9 year old?
99gator writes:
well, it's friday. i'll write a blurb here and if it's my last i promise (win or lose), i will be back sunday or monday. so if florida loses, you won't have to ask where 99gator is. if florida wins, i will not be here talking trash either.
i will be at the game tomorrow. when you strip away everything, you have two good offenses and two suspect defenses. i like florida's special teams, but special teams plays are usually unpredictable. the overriding thing for me is that florida is at home. winning on the road is tough. winning on the road with a suspect defense is even more difficult. i expect florida's crowd to help florida's defense more than it will hurt tennessee's offense. i also like the fact that florida seems to have more players that can make special plays offensively. take a 5 yard pass to the house type of thing.
i think the home crowd helps florida's defense enough to get the win.

More of that propaganda from the LSU faithful. I bet Hyams wrote every other word via email. I'm tired of being force fed negativity from pompous, know-it-all goons.

Why do they allow this guy to write for KSN again? I put him up there with Holtz and Corso. The three stooges.

Adams picked Florida monday and posted his pick on the Beat John Adams article.Afraid he is right.Playing at Florida and special teams play will likely be the difference maker.

99gator,I am glad to see there is some class with the gator nation.Thanks.I hope you are wrong and UT wins but I have the same feeling you have that UT loses and I pray we are both wrong.GO BIG ORANGE!!!
DaveVol writes:
As I have said before I don't read JA's stuff, I do like reading the posts though. I hope we win but my gut tells me we could be in for a long day. I don't have any great insight, just hope. This is my measurement year for Fulmer. I know some of you will say what took you so long. There are several key games that Fulmer must win, in my opinion, to keep his job and this is one of them. I know there is more to winning games than just blocking and tackling, but if you don't have them you won't win. Too many times we have witnessed the Vols be deficient in these areas. I often think of a quote by the General, "Touchdowns follow blocking just as surely as night follows day". I believe Neyland won because he stressed the fundamentals, I believe we have lost games because of the lack of fundamentals along with some poor schemes. Like I said I hope we win and I will be pulling hard for the Vols, because I cannot stand the gators.
Colliervol writes:
Mlewishome has it right. There are no facts anywhere that say that the Gators should be favored due to defense. They have played two high school teams with very little talent so how in the world can anybody tell if they have better talent than the Vols? Certainly, I'd favor them cause they are at home but not because they have the better defense.
Colliervol writes:
And, for what it's worth, a noted betting service prognosticator (Greg Roberts) on radio this morning picked the Vols straight up. Here's hoping he knows what he's talking about.

Fair enough 99gator. Probably another nailbiter, which does, indeed, lean toward the home team. Nothing to do now but playy it and see who steps up. I used to hate Florida, but anoyone who doesn't acknowledge consistent quality is simply noot being realistic. Now, I hate Georgia. Hope it's not three in a row! GO BIG ORANGE

I don't think Florida's offense will put up the numbers Cal's did (as JA expects). Cal - well oiled, Florida - just getting to know each other. I just watched the 98 UT-FL game on ESPN Classic. I was actually stunned how sloppy the UT defense looked in that game - missed tackles, 80 yard touchdown allowed. It wasn't til the end when pressure was really getting to Johnson and Palmer. Seemed that the 98 team had playmakers though - something we don't see much anymore. I don't think that team was better than the one we have now - just more playmakers made it happen when it mattered. Tennessee also used fullback well (Bryson) that year. Anyway - Go Vols.
surfmaster writes:
I'm tired of hearing about all of Florida's playmakers and superior talent. We can play a little football too. Three things you can't predict: turnovers, mistakes/penalties and heart/character. I've been following UT football for over 30 years (class of '85) and I have seen numerous occasions where Tennessee beat teams that had supposedly "better talent" and beat them convincingly. Miami in the 'dome comes to mind. We don't lay down for anybody. Sooner or later, Floriduh's streak will come to an end. They are overconfident, and ripe to fall. My prediction: Florida 20 Tennessee 42. That's right. You heard it here first.

Throw out the stats... The coaches and players know it. All comes down to who wants it more, is prepared, has the respect and pride to play hard, execute, and the muscle, speed, and discipline to create a win. Tennessee's problem circa 2000-now has been discipline, and the phrase "WE GAVE IT OUR BEST.". Bear Bryant had the statement for that line of thinking.. "The problem with that (your best) is.. THAT YOU STILL LOST!" and "I didnt want your best.. I wanted to win."
Thats my point. Someone, somewhere along the way has given TNs players that 'out', to say that its okay for them to be beaten. Excuses I think people are gearing themselves up for: "They have Tebow" "they have that hard spread option", "Our receivers are young", "We're rebuilding", blah blah...
I want to see TN go out to win every time, and play like its our last game to win.. .NO STOPS, NO REGRETS, LIGHTS OUT FOOTBALL(ie - the huge UGA/AU upset in early 80s, Miami in mid 80s, at Notre Dame in early 90s, Syracuse in Florida State in late 90s)?
I want to see TN go out and play manhandling football, take on the challenging environment, and walk away the winner. Beat another team with better or equal players with solid playcalling, discipline, fundamentals, and execution. In other words, beat Florida.
Other than reading about that kind of game JOHN ADAMS.. I have no interest in reading any other article save the one titled "VOLS WIN HANDILY" this Sunday... So save yourself the time, ink, and/or keystrokes....

I'm glad Adams picked Florida. I hate it when he picks the Vols to win as he usually misses the picks except for the obvious picks. He is the reason that I no longer subscribe to the KNS. And now I can't listen to the Sports Animal from 10 to noon if he is on. Pompous should be his middle name.

You know what's funny?
You all come in here and bash Adams and say what he writes is phooey. You all read because you want to see what crazy thing he will say. You buy a paper, or log onto the site and see many ads.
He's staffed to get people to read not to appease the good ole' boys thoughts?
Anyone ever heard of Paul Finebaum a Tennessee grad that is a writer in Alabama. He is popular because he isn't afriad to talk down on Alabama and the football team, actually thats what makes him popular.
One second you're saying "I hate Adams then the next you go, well carrots are cheap over air at Kroger think I'll go get me sum em air carrots"
Bigger readership, more ads, more KNS can charge for a premium ad spot. It starts at Adams, as the majority of papers are bought for the sports section.
Go ahead, take shots at that.

I believe this is the first of many games to come when the SPEED PLAYS. It will make a huge difference in our RB’s, WR’s, DB’s, and special teams. The game will come down to our front 7 on D. The heart pumps TENNESSEE ORANGE BLOOD!

You are wrong Mustang..
I don't like carrots.
I wouldn't get them "at Kroger"
or from a roamer,
on a plane,

a boat, or
on a goat,
"over air" or anywhere...
btw - John Ward was a very impartial commentator, capable of delivering good 'color' to Vol fans every gameday Saturday. Didnt he get people to listen in???

Dad, you get the daily prize!
Some folks apparently love to complain. They should clue in to what you wrote in your post.
3:30PM today, I'm in front of my TV doing what I live for (sports-wise) the "other" 7.5 months of the year. As far as I can tell, either the Vols or the other team will win. A flip of the coin will get me as close to an accurate prediction as I can get. I DO know that whether they win or lose, I'll still be a huge Vols fan tomorrow morning. I won't be working on an ulcer while I'm reading the Sunday paper. Guess it's called having a life, huh?
As far as the comments concerning Adams, my take is this: somehow, some way, the guy has earned a living watching sports, writing about sports, and talking about sports. In Knoxville Tennessee. I would ask some of these folks what they do, and are they a little envious? When it comes down to it, I AM a bit envious and often wonder what it would be like to get paid to live a life centered around sports in Knoxville! Adams and the rest at the KNS may not be the smartest folks in the world, but they are getting paid to do what I choose to do for recreation. Sounds as if they are pretty sharp after all!

I think TN will win today too, but you can't argue with any of the points the writer makes that say that is unlikely. He does not have to be a Vol-hater just to give his opinion. Take a deep breath and GROW UP.
