After attending Tennessee’s 59-20 loss at Florida on Saturday, defensive tackle Marty Everett knows the Vols need help.
Everett, from South Sumter High School in Bushnell, Fla., said he thought the Gators “scrubbed” the Vols. That showed him there’s a chance for new players to fix UT’s problem.
“They definitely need some help real bad,” said Everett, who attended the game during an unofficial visit. “I think I could help them out.”
The 6-foot-5, 299-pound Everett said UT’s blowout loss won’t stop him from considering the Vols. He said he gives UT special consideration because it was the first school to offer him a scholarship last fall.
“They were the first ones to come and show they were interested in me,” he said. “That says a lot for them to recognize me first and offer me right off the bat.”
Florida’s win over UT only helped the Gators in their pursuit of Everett. He said Florida and Alabama are the two schools standing out in his mind.
Everett said he’s also considering LSU, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Clemson.
He said Florida’s defense, which replaced nine of 11 starters from last year’s national championship team, is better than he expected.
“I was kind of shocked that they still had it after losing all the starters on defense,” he said. “It was shocking because, whoa, I didn’t know they’d have that spunk. It tells me they’re very disciplined.”
Florida coach Urban Meyer has made a point to allow young players to see the field. Everett said he’s taken notice of the opportunity.
“It says a lot to me,” he said. “I’d definitely have a chance to play if I go there. That’s very important. I want to get playing time definitely.”
Alabama also could offer Everett playing time. He said he likes the Tide’s defense but knows it can improve.
Everett said he watched the second half of Alabama’s 41-38 win over Arkansas on Saturday. He said he’s impressed by Nick Saban, who has helped the Tide improve to 3-0 in his first season as head coach.
“It says a lot,” Everett said. “Last year and the year before that they weren’t like that. It’s only the third game.”
Everett said Alabama has been recruiting him the heaviest. He attended a football camp in Tuscaloosa on July 22.
Everett hasn’t taken any official visits and said he doesn’t plan to until he finishes his senior season.
He said he would like to take an official visit to UT, but he hasn’t made firm plans on any of his trips.

Man, even the recruits know we suck...Damn, Foolmore better pull a miracle or ten out of his fat a$$ to get some top recruits this year....Wrong editorial to post...Nothing like letting a recruit we are trying to get, say we got scrubbed and put it on the net for all other recruits to read!!

eric......why are your worried? The stuff you and others write is no worse. And you are the fans these young recruits have to please. If I was a recruit I would be concerned also about the fan base.

Guys why all the name calling? I'm not a fan of Fulmer or Chavis however they do deserve our respect. It really makes you sound like a bunch of rednecks.

What do you think they are Ironcity?

Wow, great, more players our coaches won't be able to coach.

I'm tired of hearing this crap about the fans need to shut up because we're not helping Trooper and the boys recruit. You want to get good talent...WIN SOME FREAKING GAMES! Or at least lose games by a reasonable margin and play somewhat well trying. I have been defending Phil and this program for the last few years and I'm done. No name calling needed...just get some new people in here. Other than a hand full of people on here and all the callers (completely screened) on VOL calls, Vol nation wants a change to be made.

Why do these coaches deserve our respect???
they are paid lots of money to fail these kids, and fail us...We pump money into the Univ. and all we get is mediocre?

Exactly eric, I think 2 million dollars is pretty respectful. You know what though....there's a lot of football left, there's nothing that can't be corrected, we're a couple of plays away from being undefeated, they did a heckuva job blocking our guys, they have fantastic skill players, we're a young team, we did some things well, we're gonna work like heck to get ready for an outstanding Ark St. team, this is a fun group to coach, they've really responded well to the challenge at hand. Blah F'ing Blah Blah Blah. Tired of it!!!!

We aren't going to get guys like this with the way we are performing. its just not going to happen. Unless we play better, we aren't beating out Fla, Ala, and the likes on these star recruits

And another thing....it's not like UT can tell recruits "Oh yea. You'll come in and play as a freshman."
That's another thing teams like Fla. LSU and USC are showing their incoming guys. Come here and play right away.
I think that is starting to mean more to High school guys. Not bench riding.

keep spinning it CRVol.... you may get your way yet.
Posted by utvols1 on September 19, 2007 at 4:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I think most folks on here feel the same way CR does. Heck in the SEC Champ game vs LSU was when I knew the gig was up. When Clemson spanked us I knew it was past over. I still don't know why eveyone on this site thought with loosing Meechum, McBride, Haraslson etc that we'd be better this year. If you think it's bad now wait until next year. Any recruit that was on the fence just left. And we lose Ainge. Start worring about Eric Berry being a flight risk too. Enough of Fulmers excuses.

I was just called on the phone by a girl on behalf of UT asking for, you guessed it, money.
I told her, not one more thin dime from this alumni until Foolmore is GONE.
She chuckled and was acting kind of surprised.
I told her that she will be hearing a lot more of this type of reaction.

Mr. Everett...
Unless Steve Spurrier (Or someone else) is our coach next year, do yourself a favor & go to LSU or Florida. Your right on 2 points..1.They are both very disciplined programs, & will get talented freshmen such as yourself on the field right away 2. The VOLS need serious help, but won't get it from the current 'stay the course' regime.

Wrong title for this article. There is no way that you can say a game like this doesn't hurt UT. High school players finish their games on Friday night and spend all day long watching college football on Saturday. A 39 point blow-out is not something that's easy to forget. And losing 5 of our last 7 bowl games doesn't look good either. Peyton Manning passed on Ole Miss because he thought he would have a better chance to play for a championship at Tennessee. How many high school athletes out there will pass on UT because they think they will have a better chance on a better team somewhere else!?!
Posted by Colliervol on September 20, 2007 at 5:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Regarding Peyton, yes it was that and the fact the Ole Miss was about to go on probation with no bowl or TV for a couple of years. That made the decision a lot easier. The state of a program has some bearing on recruits but I think it is more a case of (1) Where can I get playing time and how quickly and (2) what program can get me to the pros?
