Train your binoculars on the Tennessee sideline during a game, and you'll no doubt see Daniel Lincoln kicking into a net.
You might even see the occasional teammate talking to Lincoln, too.
Just because he's 8-of-8 on field-goal attempts this season doesn't mean he's being treated like a pitcher in the midst of a perfect game.
"We joke about it," Lincoln said. "(Holder) Casey (Woods) and I joke about it sometimes because I know some kickers are kind of mental about it and it would bother them. But Casey knows I'm not like that."
Almost everyone knows that Lincoln is off to the best start for a UT kicker in school history.
Lincoln leads a parade of perfect kickers across the country with eight field goals, and Arkansas' Alex Tejada and Ohio's Michael Braunstein are the only others who have made their first seven this season.
But here's betting neither of those two went through what Lincoln did to get there.
Before the redshirt freshman ever set foot on the game field, UT coach Phillip Fulmer put him through what amounted to boot camp for kickers.
"Some of it can't be put into print, most of it can't," Lincoln says. "It's been everything from trying to distract you. Standing behind you talking, yelling at you while you're doing it. Get hit in the head with things, having to run stadiums if you miss something or you get a kick blocked."
And Lincoln, who counts himself as his harshest critic, rarely pleased Fulmer even when he felt satisfied.
"Even when you did something right, it wasn't good enough," Lincoln says. "It's been great."
Great now, anyway.
Lincoln admits that last year wasn't exactly a stroll through the park. It was a lot more like a sprint up the bleachers, which Lincoln did after one scrimmage this year.
But slowly he tuned out the distractions and learned to rely on himself. So far, he's thriving, thanks to what he and punter Britton Colquitt have dubbed Fulmer's "mental warfare."
"It got to me for a while, a really good while," Lincoln says. "You get down on yourself and you've got to come back. And it's definitely got to come from within you. You've got to rely on yourself and come back and be mentally tough. I think that's the biggest asset for a kicker."
It's turned into one for Lincoln.
Against Florida in the Swamp, Lincoln, a native of Ocala, Fla., tuned out foul language and the pressure of kicking in front of what was essentially a hometown crowd by making a pair of chip-shot attempts in the first half.
It's a long way from where Lincoln was when he first arrived on campus.
"The consistency that he's shown has been very, very positive," Fulmer said. "If you knew where we started to where we are now, it is quite impressive. I think he tried to kick way too hard and way too much when he first got here (and) ended up injuring himself."
A strained quadriceps muscle in his redshirt year set him back, but Lincoln emerged in a battle with Colquitt in spring practice and then eventually earned Fulmer's trust after Colquitt suffered a pulled quad during fall camp.
Lincoln has been nearly seamless - and flawless, too - in making the transition, thanks to those mental games Fulmer played.
"I've been really hard on him," Fulmer said. "I think it's paid off. I think his mental toughness is there, his mindset's there. Not that he won't (miss) sometime in his career - I hope not too soon - he'll have that hurdle to get back over like everybody does. But I'm real pleased with the way he's gone about his business."

Fulmer is soft... yet abusive. We should fire him and get someone who... oh never mind.

ditto rod. One recurring theme with these guys is that when they start losing games, we start hearing this line, "We know we can be a great team..." If they'd spend as much time sharpening skills as they do propping up self esteem...

That's right UGA, BAMA, and anyone else that wants a piece of UT! Our kicker is a beast, fear that!
Go ahead, celebrate if you like. I see it as 8 failed opportunities for TDs, which is 48 points in case your math is rusty. given he hits all the PATs that's 56! Wow even my Jethro math tells me that might have been the difference in one of those L's.

HOw many games have we won over the years because someone made a field goal. How about in '98? I seem to remember a couple against Florida and Syracuse. How about Hall's kick to beat Georgia in '94. How about Wilhoit's 50 yarder to beat Florida in '04. A good field goal kicker can make you or break you, and it is good to see all the negative postings following an article that is a positive about this team. And Rodney, what makes you think Fulmer isn't that tough on other position players on the team. You think he just picks on the kicker?

It wasn't 56 points lost. You forgot to subtract the 24 points that were made on the field goals. It was only 32 points lost.
GreerVol22 writes:
ilove_fb i guess your right, its the one and only facet of the team that seems to not have issues when they take the field.

Glass half empty or half full perspective GreerVol22? I want tds for sure. FGs are usually ok if sprinkled amongst many tds like with Arky State.Go Vols beat OPEN DATE!!!

This is insightful because it demonstrates what most of us don't see behind the scenes. As a coach, you criticize in private and praise in public.

Who said Fulmer has been passed by? This staff is evolving in front of our eyes. Instead of Run, Run, Pass, Punt...Now it's Bubble screen left, Run, Bubble screen right, field goal

I tell you 4jesus, I'm just thankful to have a glass and some perspective to put in it....1/2 full or not.

Does anyone know what the betting line is this week for UT vs. Idle? Can't find it anywhere.... what conference are they in?
GreerVol22 writes:
He's a little short, but at least his pinky isn't broken...see if he can sling it too.

Is it me, or does Fulmer seem to get more excited on the sidelines after a FG and less anitmated after a TD?

This just in, CRVol owns himself!!

CRVol - I would pay $50 to watch Phil do the Chunk Goonie shuffle, at least that would be enjoyful to watch.

I like the mentality of GreerVol and his buddy in Columbia(sorry I couldn't resist a little SC humor there, no harm meant) that FG's will get you beat. That being said, a reliable kicker is like gold in today's age of walk-on's and soccer players. Lincoln has proven to this point to be steady and, if he continues to improve on the kickoffs, could be a valuable asset for this team down the road.

your new name is FATtouchdownTn since you are so infatuated with fat and doughnuts. No, I can't do that. It would be disrespectful to you as a person. But then, when did posters start showing any respect to others/coaches? You know I bet your mother would have washed your mouth and fingers with soap for being so disrespectful. I hear Achmadenajad(SP) has an opening weekly for his PR director in Iran. Hmmmmm. Wonder how he would take to similar criticism? So TuchdownTn I'll keep you at your regular poster child name to not fall prey to same mistake. GO VOLS!!!
vol4jesus writes:
Ooops left out the o in TouchdownTn.

amazing some people can't let up on bashing the coach...wow!
