Pearl says 'I'm not going anywhere'

Tennessee men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl isn’t going anywhere.

Pearl said Tuesday he will not consider any other job offers and is returning to coach at UT.

“We have something going here that is very special,’’ Pearl told The News Sentinel. “I know there has been a lot of speculation, but I’m not going anywhere.

“The only job I’m interested in is the one here at the University of Tennessee.’’

There had been widespread speculation that Indiana would pursue Pearl for its opening before the Hoosiers filled the post with Marquette’s Tom Crean on Tuesday.

Pearl said Monday on Dan Patrick’s radio show that the Hoosiers had indeed extended some “feelers.’’

“At one time, Indiana was my dream job,’’ said Pearl, who won a Division II national championship at Southern Indiana in 1995 before moving on to Wisconsin-Milwaukee and ultimately, Tennessee four year ago. “I was not officially contacted.’’

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said on the News Sentinel’s Sports Page radio show last week that he would have granted Indiana permission to talk to Pearl.

But Hamilton also said the Vols had every intention of doing what it took to keep Pearl at UT.

“Tennessee gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, and we’ve now built a program that’s on par with Indiana,’’ Pearl said. “Why would I leave a program I helped build. Why would I leave the people that believed in me?’’

Pearl, who was approached by Iowa about its vacancy a year ago, has a contract that calls for him to receive a $100,000 raise and make $1.4 million next season.

But sources close to the situation said Pearl will receive a larger raise based on the team’s accomplishments this season.

The Vols won a school-record 31 games, attained the No. 1 ranking in the nation for the first time in school history and won their first outright SEC title in 41 years en route to a second consecutive appearance in the Sweet 16.

Three hours after Pearl announced he was staying at UT on Tuesday, the Vols received a verbal commitment from Scotty Hopson, the No. 9 player in the nation, rounding out a recruiting class of four players that could rank in the top five.

Lofton Honored: Departing senior Chris Lofton was one of 10 players named to the John R. Wooden All-American team.

Lofton, the SEC’s all-time leading 3-point shooter and a two-time Associated Press All-American, will participate in a 3-point contest in San Antonio on Thursday night.

Wooden All-American selections are Lofton, D.J. Augustin (Texas), Michael Beasley (Kansas State), Stephen Curry (Davidson), Chris Douglas-Roberts (Memphis), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Luke Harangody (Notre Dame), Kevin Love (UCLA), Derrick Rose (Memphis) and Brandon Rush (Kansas).

CBP needs to get it while it is there to get. In his profession you can go from hero to goat real quick. I just hope he remains hungry enough to build an elite program and not get content. Good luck coach!

It stinks that with success, the end of every season comes the mindscrew of having to worry about Bruce leaving.

Don't tell us you are simply staying, Bruce, tell us you are RETIRING here!

I think he can buy a bigger boat. Why move to Indiana, where you can count on endless comparisons to Bob Knight, the women are ugly and boating season lasts only a couple months?

Hamilton is too smart to let Pearl leave. He realizes the type of money he'd have to pay to replace Pearl with the same caliber coach. 1.8-2 mil is a steal when it comes to a great college coach. Plus, Pearl gets to build his own legacy here instead of endless comparisons at other more basketball rich schools.

TJ: I dont know. If not it is a really good April Fools joke. I can tell you this. They sent an email out to everyone that advertises in their magazine that contained the "press release." Tiger Fans at my work are throwing fits, one said they are calling the Memphis AD...blah blah blah.

The interim Indiana coach kicked 2 of the prima donna players off the team which will leave them with no starters returning next year. They missed practices so he said "See Ya".

I kinda agree with The_Vol_. I say he is content with where he is (and I am ecstatic that he is staying) and needs a few more milestones to warrant the kinda salary some of you suggest throwing his way. I think we have exalted Pearl because he is enthusiastic, but he has only proven himself to an extent thus far. I dont doubt he is an amazing coach, but the kind of money some suggest is reserved for NC coaches.

There are still many bridges to cross my friends.

I told you CBP was not going anywhere. 1) He already said he would stay at least until his contract with UT was done 2) Where else could he get blown out of the sweet 16 with talent he self described as "final 4 quality" and still get a raise? 3) I have seen his contract and it calls for a $1 million pay back to UT if he leaves before March 28th 2012. So, I am not surprised but very happy he will be here a long time, he makes BBall interesting and something fun to watch while we wait for Football season.

More good news, the best, in fact! Now if only Tyler would say the same. CBP undoubtedly had to say that to get Hopson to commit. THE_VOL, CBP's record on the court is not the only relevant factor in his pay. Internal factors would include the massive increase in attendance, support, and publicity he has brought. The key external factor is the going market rate for successful men's basketball coaches. I don't believe he should be in the $4mil/yr Billy Donovan category, and the $3mil/yr Gillespie figure is at least as ridiculous as Saban's package at Bama, based on current productivity. However, I can't see how anyone would object to $2mil/yr for CBP, given all of the above. I never doubted CBP's honesty or sincerity, but I do think it would be unfair to REFUSE a nice raise just BECAUSE he said he wanted to be here and hoped to stay.

Posted by juicetke on April 2, 2008 at 11:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm sure there was no coincidence that he called this press conference and the commitment by Hopson. Sounds like Hopson may have been a little worried he was leaving or another coach was feeding Hopson some bull.

Posted by richvol on April 2, 2008 at 11:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tennessee did not have final four talent this year...that's obvious. Tyler Smith,if he stays, brings us closer to that level. If Scotty Hopson is as good as advertized and our returning players develop further we have a start.

Tennessee needs to pay Coach Pearl fairly. If they do then we will have no problem with him leaving. He has become a Tennessee man.

Posted by LargeOrange on April 2, 2008 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

richvol - "Tennessee did not have final four talent this year...that's obvious." I agree, especially after both Chris and Howell went cold, but that was the quote from CBP, and he repeated it on Vol Calls Monday night. He said (paraphrasing) "it is not often you have a team that is capable of getting to the Final 4, we had that this year and it is very disappointing to not get there, in time we will have it again and will hopefully get the Final 4 done." MH needs to make sure he is paid on par with the top 2 or 3 coaches in the SEC.

My point being, if you have repeated your self so many times to all of us, your opinion of Mark Packer, et al, how is it you would have never mentioned this to someone who you call a friend?

BigOJ LargeOrange are you defending the clowns you mentioned in your post ? FYI The jury's out on Rogers and young Bartholomew ( we'll see how the season goes ) .....And yes , I'm glad ND took young Clausen ,5 years of poor play was enough ! Ainge wasn't that bad, just wasn't a Peyton or a Tee...Bruce Pearl is far better coach than Ray Mears...Karl was a wasted jersey...And Seivers and Dickey had a "scam" started that was stopped...Packer needs to look at other employment options...Nothing personal against anyone mentioned just "my view" as a Volfan..My hope is young Rogers and Bartholomew will take ( or help take the Vols to another NC)...John Adams and Mike Griffith write great articles...Coach Fulmer does a great job ! Now ,Big OJ is that explain this Vol fan ? Go Vols !

LargeOrange, I think CBP should perhaps not be taken literally when he implied that we had Final Four talent. It may have just been press-agentry of a sort. IMHO, saying a team is "capable" of reaching a Final Four is not the same as saying it is a Final Four-caliber team, if I have stated it clearly. Sure, IF Wayne hadn't picked up those two cheap fouls early, and IF Chris and JaJuan had been lighting it up, and IF Padgett, for example, had gotten in foul trouble, etc., etc., we could have advanced. Then IF Lawson's ankle had flared up again or IF Hansbrough tripped over the side-line taking the court, we MIGHT have reached the Final Four. I think CBP was saying that we were WORTHY of making the Final Four, not that we SHOULD have made it. Of course, I didn't hear his exact words, so WTH do I know?

nafslov - I don't know much about Packer so I don't care either way. Since it is so dead around here and I am caught up at work, I will share my feelings about those you feel passionate about. I think Rogers has the potiential to be a star, too early to say on young Barthomew, but I thought Will was a beast and I thought he was outstanding at UT, so we disagree there. I never cared much for Dickey, I have spoken to him many times and I think he was pretty much a jerk, I love the "T" on the field and on the helmets and give him props for that as well as for building so many fine facilities, also probably the third best FB Coach we've ever had. Jury is still out on CBP as a game time coach, but as a salesman, motivator, excitement generator, and apparently recruiter, he is top notch. Agree on Ainge, and the 2 older Clausens, young one may be a lot better. Disagree on Ryan Karl, I think he showed more guts, heart and hustle than 3/4 of his teammates. In a way, like a Dane Bradshaw, he didn't have the raw athleticism of say the Smiths or Prince, but he brought that intensity and love of the Orange that makes a difference. I didn't bring up John Adams, for obvious reasons, Griffith does a pretty fair job most of the time. Agree on Coach Fulmer. Is this what they call the doldrums?

Posted by GlennMaxwell on April 2, 2008 at 3:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And I'm more than happy to let you gloat over that "dominating" 4-point win, volfan.

After all, if all goes well, you'll soon be able to say you were the only team to beat the national champs. That'll be good for the state --Tennessee will have the national champions AND the lone team to beat the national champs. Not bad a year in college basketball for the state of Tennessee.

Of course, it would have been even better for you if it had been a true "butt stomping" -- something like, say, Memphis's 30-point halftime lead over Michigan State. But from the Vol perspective, considering the state of men's basketball until recent years, I guess four points is a "butt stomping."

At any rate, enjoy your victory. Considering the direction each team's season went after that game, I wouldn't trade places for the world.

we beat you by 18 last year. would that count as a butt stomp in your book? in mine, as well as most, it is a good old fashioned butt whipping. but i digress.

when you can talk about your conference record, which must be a football conference, with out creating smirks among the orange faithful, then have at it.

You might as will give it up on trying to get the upper hand with basketball trash talk when we're warming up for the Final Four and you're still trying to figure out how to get past the Sweet Sixteen. Get back to me when you finally break through.

And what new coach are you referring to?

Posted by marc_ash on April 2, 2008 at 4:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

glenn, why even bother opening your mouth #1 and #2, why do it on a UT site? UT played Memphis and they won. Thats it, its a game that meant something at the time and means nothing now. Memphis isn't in the SEC, Memphis isn't a rival for the Vols, Memphis never beats UT at anything so what is the purpose of even showing up here?

Listen, you may have a shot at a title. If so, good for you. My personal belief is that Memphis will again choke in the big game. They have never won a title in anything, so why start now. What I would suggest is you wait until Tuesday to start running off at the mouth. I'd be willing to bet that if Memphis loses you won't be showing up anytime soon.

Posted by marc_ash on April 2, 2008 at 4:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

glen,

But here is what is intersting to me. For a team that is supposed to be so "dominant" over the past 10 years....how come you can never win the big games?

UT has done more in just 3 years than most programs have ever done. Besides, if UT is so poor at what they do, imagine what they will be doing when they get some "good" talent.

Posted by GlennMaxwell on April 2, 2008 at 4:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, don't worry, Marc. I'll gladly drop by Tuesday regardless of how things turn out. UT will probably never figure out how to get to a Final Four, so you might as well at least get to talk to someone who has.

Posted by marc_ash on April 2, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And by the way Maxwell.....I believe it was you that started the "trash talking" on a UT board. You can have 30 final 4's in a row for all that matters....But the fact remains, if you don't win the next 2 games...you are in the same boat as UT.

Posted by GlennMaxwell on April 2, 2008 at 4:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Not quite the same boat, Marc. We'll be in that boat that holds FOUR teams. You'll be over in the one that accommodates SIXTEEN.

Posted by marc_ash on April 2, 2008 at 4:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Who cares about a final 4 glen. I hope you aren't going to harp on your final 4's, elite 8's or sweet 16's because they don't mean a d@mn thing. Nothing matters unless you win a championship which Memphis has never done.

UT is a new powerhouse in basketball. UT was a laughing stock in basketball until 3 years ago....count em....3. Bruce Pearl has done more in his 3 years than it has taken many programs to do in a decade.

Continue to boast about how good memphis is at basketball, but as I've stated before you haven't won anything. Unless you want the attendance award for being the Tennessee team with the final 4 appearance. If thats the trophy you want, it's yours.

Win something before you start puffing your chest out.

Sure got you worked into a lather, didn't I, Marc? Must have struck a nerve. You're right that your basketball program is making progress. Keep at it -- someday, maybe your teams will be one of the four featured in all the coverage leading up to Final Four. In the meantime, you better focus on the BCS. That's probably more realistic for Tennessee right now.

And VolFan ... Marshall by 30, Michigan State by 30 (at the half), Texas (which I think beat UT) by 18 -- doesn't matter to us; they're all easy wins. BTW, I think the word you were searching for is "naught," as in: "All your musing(s) are for naught."

Posted by marc_ash on April 2, 2008 at 4:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No glen, I am not worked up at all. Funny how you can ascertain that from reading words on a computer screen. Usually folks can interperet suggested tone from punctuation such as exclaimation points or caps...funny, doesn't look like I've done either of those. I can assure you mr. glen that you are far from striking any nerve with me. Try beating UT at something and actually winning a title in something and then I might have a nerve struck.

Again, I still don't understand what your point is. Please answer this simple question...how many titles has Memphis won? The answer is very simple, as many as UT. But the thing is, UT has only been good for 3 years and Memphis is supposed to be a powerhouse.

As BOA said, nobody gives a flip about a final 4 unless you seal the deal. How many titles does Memphis have again?

Congratulations, thats a pretty sweet banner you can hang in your building.

Glenn-

You can hang all the banners you want inside the FedEx Forum, but you still can't hide the fact that Memphis State is a P.O.S. suitcase college, and it is in Memphis to boot. I wouldn't trade 4 years in Knoxville for four years in Memphis and all the national championships in the world. Ya'll may be in the Final 4, but we all know that you still can't beat Big Brother, on or off the court. Memphis State will always be inferior no matter what they accomplish on the basketball court.

Wow, you and your cohorts sure have typed a lot of "words on a computer screen" in the last little while about something that doesn't mean a flip to you. I guess if it had really mattered, you'd have melted down your keyboard by now! (There's an exclamation point for ya.) Give it up, Marc. The time you've spent on this topic belies your frustration at UT not being there instead of Memphis. That's OK; like I said, keep working and your team will get there too.

OK, fellas, I've stirred the pot enough for one day. Get back to reassuring yourself that Pearl isn't going anywhere, and I'll check back in with you when the Final Four excitement gets a day or two closer.

Glenn: Are you conveniently forgetting the Miss St miracle? And this from an 8 seed. Would you term that a blowout?

When I survey the F4, I find that my dislike for Memphis pales in comparison to KU, NC, & UCLA. So good luck and keep hoping that Dorsey plays more than 15 minutes opposite Love. If not, "there will be Bud."

No, Murray, Miss. State was the one close game we've had in the tourney. But everybody's had some close ones -- UCLA, Kansas, etc.

That's the thing, teams that are ready for the Final Four have to be able to win the close ones as well as the blowouts.

Saw your note as I was on my way out the door, so to speak, and didn't want you to feel left out.

Later.

We know a little something about winning the close ones.

Under Bruce Pearl, UT is 70-6 when leading or tied with five minutes left in the game.

Glen, if you feel better thinking you "got to me" then you go ahead young man. Funny how you can't seem to have any response to the fact that memphis hasn't won a thing.

For that matter...why even come to a vols board? If we matter that little to you, then go away. Might want to "give it up" yourself young un. Winning a championship settles every argument, and its been quite a while since memphis has done that in anything.

Memphis won a national championship in handball if my memory serves me correct. They play in a "mid-major" conference and to insinuate that they have been some powerhouse in basketball (or have some winning tradition like say a Kentucky) is completely laughable. Until now, memphis has only been to one more f4 than we have. And what is this crap about reassuring ourselves our coach isnt leaving? Calipari has looked at every vacancy over the last two years. He'd love to get a job like Kansas, Indiana, UNC - the problem is he's a shady scumbag who can't win a big game.

I would venture a guess that Mikey H will change hugging partners soon. Everyone needs a quality hug now and then.

CBP will have to run for cover from ol' MH if and when he wins the big one.

Pat, win that thing and let the doldrums engulf us.

Good luck Thursday #5 and enjoy it, please get back to TBA for as many games as you can next year. Thanks for a sensational 4 years.

I tell you what the guy seems poised to become a legend here.
All we need to do is to keep giving him the resources and he will get it done.
Season by season since he started the team has improved.
Now he is set to have one of, if not the best recruiting class in Tennessee history!

Memphis will be out of the tourney. Congrats on a 2 loss year.
