South Carolina women's basketball coach Susan Walvius dismissed freshman guards Jasmine Payne and Ashlie Billingslea, a day after the players were jailed on charges they purchased more than $400 worth of items with stolen credit and debit cards and also planned to sell marijuana.
Payne and Billingslea were suspended by the university, and have been removed from school until the matter is resolved.
Payne and Billingslea each face five charges, including three felonies, after campus police seized 28.9 grams of pot and evidence linking them to the financial transaction card claims during a search Tuesday of the players' dorm room, according to arrest warrants obtained by The State.
Officers discovered 44 individual bags of marijuana in a sunglasses case inside a bag with Billingslea's name on it, according to the warrants. Payne told police she obtained the pot and gave it to Billingslea to hold.
“This was a surprising event and certainly not indicative of the character of our team,” Walvius said in a release.
Payne and Billingslea were all-state players in high school and part of the Gamecocks’ nationally ranked recruiting class of 2007. Payne appeared in 25 games for USC this season, averaging 2.6 points and 2.1 rebounds.
Billingslea, who underwent preseason knee surgery, returned to average 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 14 games.

I haven't figured out how yet, but this has to be Phil Fulmer's fault! Right John Adams.

Maybe they could sign on as trainers with Fulmer's "The Longest Yard" squad.

TJ: You give it a rest. You agree with Adams main theme and have no problem with his selective reporting of the facts, that's your prerogative. Many others feel differently than you, I know its shocking.
Flush: I haven't read a single John Adams article since he published that garbage. I have no problem with objective criticism based on the totality of facts, but "the" Adams piece fell far short of that standard.

good racist post name by appearance(we white). Your post is even worse when some of those whose brain won't let some things rest continue to ride a horse that is dead. I'm glad you are the forgiving type and want to reach out to those who are down. Jfranks had the proper on topic post with compassion and care for the downtrodden who have made a mistake. But for the grace of God so I may go also. Read somewhere 'he who is without sin throw the first stone.' What was that sound? Oh that was stones being dropped to the ground. Grace is 'Amazing'! Hope these young ladies learn from this crucial mistake and can redirect their lives to be positive contributors to society after they serve their time.

TJack - Adams brought all this on himself. He deserves all that he gets. The reality is that he has created such a division that the only alternative is his resignation. When you lose the faith/credibility of 50%[or more] of your readers, you need to move on and start over. Adams will never be accepted by Tennesseans particularly those here in East Tennessee, no matter how hard he might try. That is a sad reality for a guy who has at the least marginal talent. Don't feel too sorry for him, Alabamians seem to love him!!!!

I think TJ's feelings are a lot like mine---I am tired of the same old comments about the dislike of John Adams!!! We have heard it before, and it doesn't need to be CONSTANTLY diffused into other unrelated articles! Yes, Give it a break!

Sad about these young ladies. Maybe they'll get a break and move on in a positive way.
I'm kinda like TJ in that I'm puzzled by the level of venom toward Adams. But I guess reading the AJC colunmists for 15 years who weekly tear into to someone from Marc Richt to the Braves etc makes you a little numb to this sort of thing. They played a big part in the coaching change at GT. Gailey was drilled again and again.
Tenn doesn't catch many breaks in the Tennessean either. Matter of fact- a lot of people don't care for the Vols, must be the Orange.
GVX is civilized compared to forums.kentucky.com on any subject, period. They refer to ones ancestry.

I understand that Adam's article created some issues. I also realize that at no point did Adam's follow his article up with an apology (maybe he did, I never read it). That being said, we are offered something in this country that is very valuable and that is a choice.
We have a choice on whether or not to read or take in the things that people like Adam's write. LIke it or not (and I didn't like his article one bit) Adams did have the right to post his article. On a personel level, I would like to see him no longer write for KSN. However, because he has a right to post, we also have a right to read (or not to read).
cjrany,
I think Adams did have one article posted since then, but I, like you, don't recall seeing any other than the one I am referring to.

TJ, pshaw, is there any causes, misdirected or otherwise that need taking up in Boerne?
It's amazing who'll turn up to protest as soon as the tv lights go on and just as quickly leave when they're off.
As ole TJ (Thomas Jefferson) said, "Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain cool and unruffled under all circumstances". I apply that to everything but Tenn football.

marc_ash - Adams did have the right to post his article, however to appear on Al and GA sports talk and trash CPA was indecent and I think unethical as he makes his living from Vol supporters. For you guys that want to give it a rest, that will be a long time coming.

If my initials were M.E. Brown and I used the screen name 'mebrown', would that be racist also? Oh, no. I would be talking about myself so that's okay.
If William White wants to call himself 'wewhite', I think that's okay.

Mr. Huff, I have never addressed your blogs, but you have hit on something, albeit accidentally that causes such angst by most Tenn fans against Adams. I know you have an anti Fulmer bias, but setting that aside, you mentioned the pillorying done by the Tennessean and AJC. I haven't seen that much by the Tennessean, but the common thread is that both of those papers are in Pro Cities. Knoxville is not, but John Adams has periodically written articles critiquing UT, in an effort, IMO to act like he is a Big City Muckraker. It's not just Fulmer, and Adams is usually late to join the party on whatever he's ranting about. There have been plenty of KNS writers and Editors through the years who have cozied up to UT. One who comes to mind that didn't was Tom Siler for the Sentinel when TKJ still existed. Siler made a lot of people mad, but kept their respect. As editor Adams should see that the two gun toting Miss. State FB players are inside GVX. However, I've noticed as these stories have piled up against other SEC schools this Spring, many of those stories like the one at Vandy and now Miss. State are left at the portal.

Keep stroking the fire Stroker. What Adams did in GA and AL was much like what the Dixie Chicks did in Europe. Voice your displeasure in your own backyard. Don't take it on a Caravan throughout the South.

Good thought, newtonrail- I don't have a Fulmer bias as much as I have a non-compete bias regardless of who is coach.
We're rolling into the tenth season without a ring.
I used to drive home in Ga, about a 40 minute saunter and start off listening to Bob Bell on 1510AM. Good show. Afternoons at work I had to put up with 650 the Zone with people like Buck Belue. Most will never know how much they trashed Big Phil when Ga actually won a few times vs him.
I probably view line play more than most because simply that's where the game is won. I am deeply disapointed in our d-line recruiting. That is simply why we have only won 10 of our last 28 against top 25 teams. I live and die with them, but believe the fire has gone out. We'll see.
I digress- I don't guess any transcripts of Adam's conversation with the likes of Finebaum are available anywhere. I wasn't privy to any of them. A good chuckle such as glazed and fritters keeps us geezers going. Good post.

colonelangus - the best screen name of the day. And one of the very best SNL skits ever. And how appropriate considering the previous posts concerning "the 'L' word".
If a football coach should be fired because he, in the eyes of a sports editor, doesn't fulfill his duties as coach, should that same sports editor be fired if he can't fulfill the duties of a sports editor? The constant typos included in this sports section/site point to a lack of leadership at the top.

General - there will always be a fritter.
If I had the gelt, there would be a 19 x 24 apple fritter against the skyline beside the jumbotron, glowing as glazed apple in the center. Every team would have to look upon this staple entering Neyland at nite, even the much-beloved John Adams.

TJ, Max Howell was a gem. He moved down to the redneck riveria near the Bama-Fla line and did a few spots via phone in Atl. Last I heard he was on some local stations down there.
He was an interesting old school gamer who didn't cut many people slack.
Finebaum needs to come to KNS for about 6 months and he'd be hoisted on his own petard. And be loving it. A true roiler.
