Vols unexpectedly seeing doubles, 12-5

Liles hits school-record four to defeat Charlotte

The bottom of Tennessee’s batting order was seeing doubles Wednesday night. That was a good thing.

Josh Liles, the Vols’ No. 7 hitter, stroked a school-record four doubles off a variety of Charlotte pitchers.

Cody Grisham, the No. 9 batter, hit two more.

The unexpected punch paved the way for a 12-5 win over 18th-ranked Charlotte (21-4) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The 12 runs were a season-high for the Vols (17-10), who open an SEC series with Florida here Friday night.

“It wasn’t the prettiest college baseball game I’ve ever seen,’’ said first-year UT coach Todd Raleigh, but that’s a good team.

“I know they didn’t play well tonight but they’ll probably be in the NCAAs.’’

Liles, a freshman right-fielder from Jackson, entered the game hitting .206 with only two doubles.

His final double, scoring Jeff Lockwood in the eighth inning, broke the school record of three, accomplished on 13 occasions.

“I was just doing what the coach told me to do, taking two,’’ said Liles.

“They looked like singles to me at first when I’d get to first base but coach (Bradley) LeCroy was sending me to second.’’

Liles, also who made a nice sliding catch in right field, said Raleigh has been working with him lately on his stance, his swing and his mindset at the plate.

“It feels good to finally get some results,’’ Liles said.

The doubles off the bat of Grisham, a sophomore shortstop from Booneville, Miss., had to be even more of a surprise to Charlotte.

Grisham was batting last in the order for a reason. He entered the game hitting .087 with two hits in 19 at-bats.

Ty’Relle Harris started and lasted 4  2⁄3 innings. He gave up two earned runs and seven hits.

Former Loudon High School standout Aaron Everett (3-2) came out of the bullpen and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. He allowed one unearned run in his 2  1⁄3 innings.

Some of UT’s big hits came from the usual suspects. Lockwood had three hits, including his third home run, a two-run blast in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Yan Gomes singled in a run and P.J. Polk singled in two when he pinch hit for Kentrail Davis, who struck out three times.

Grisham had an eventful night in the field as well. He was guilty of back-to-back errors in the sixth to allow a Charlotte run.

In the seventh, Grisham made a nice recovery, saving Everett’s pickoff throw to second from sailing into center-field. In the bargain, runner Brad McElroy was called out.

That brought Charlotte coach Loren Hibbs out to protest vehemently enough to get ejected.

Tennessee outhit Charlotte 14-10. Each team committed four errors.

MTSU Moves Game: Tennessee’s game at Middle Tennessee State on April 15 has been moved to the Gamble Sports Complex in Winchester.

Seating at MTSU’s Reese Smith Field in Murfeesboro is limited due to construction. Gamble seats 2,000.

MTSU will also move its two-game series with Mississippi State on May 6-7.

“We are expecting large crowds for all three games which could present a capacity problem at Reese Smith Field due to our on-going construction,” said MTSU athletic director Chris Massaro.

Tickets are $10.
