Doubles start Vols against Vandy

The No. 8 Tennessee men dominated Vanderbilt 6-1 on Friday after rain chased the teams into the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.

UT (18-2, 7-2 SEC) got singles wins from Davey Sandgren, J.P. Smith, Jeremy Tweedt, Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago after the 17th-ranked No. 1 doubles team of Kaden Hensel and Smith clinched the doubles point against the No. 30 Commodores (11-7, 3-6).

"I think it all started in doubles where we had a terrific effort by the guys,'' said UT coach Sam Winterbotham.

The Vols swept the doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Conkic and Fago won at No. 3, as did Sandgren and Tweedt at No. 2.

Sandgren made it 2-0, Tennessee, with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. The lead grew to 3-0 when 25th-ranked Smith won 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2.

Vanderbilt got on the board when 55th-ranked Ryan Preston outlasted No. 96 Hensel at No. 1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Tweedt then clinched the match with a win at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3. The French native is 8-1 in SEC and 12-1 in dual matches.

Conkic cleaned up at No. 3 by a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 count for his team-high 15th win in dual-match play. Fago's 6-3, 6-3, win at No. 5 improved the freshman from Italy to 9-0 in SEC play and ran his winning streak to 11 matches.

The win kept UT in a three-way tie for second place in the SEC. Florida and Ole Miss also won Friday to improve to 7-2. Third-ranked Georgia beat Kentucky to improve to 9-0.

Women's Tennis: The 13th-ranked Vanderbilt women routed No. 17 Tennessee 7-0 in Nashville. The Lady Vols (13-6, 6-3 SEC) didn't win a set.

Vandy (15-3, 6-3) won the doubles point as not even UT's 11th-ranked duo of Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor was able to avoid defeat.

Softball: The No. 12 Lady Vols (33-7, 7-6 SEC) host No. 14 Georgia in a 1 p.m. double-header today at Lee Softball Stadium, followed by a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.

Georgia (35-8, 8-3) has won 16 games in a row.

UT's Tonya Callahan ranks second in the SEC in batting average (.441), home runs (9) and RBI (39).

Megan Rhodes will have her "Senior Day" today, followed by Caitlin Ryan on Sunday.

Men's Golf: Tennessee struggled to an 11-over-par 299 total to tie for 14th in the 18-team Administaff ASU Invitational in Evans, Ga.

David Holmes and Robin Wingardh each shot 2-over 74, Phillip Pettitt a 75, Chris Paisley a 76 and Charlie Ford a 77.

Women's Track: Two Knoxville Elite runners trained by J.J. Clark won events at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Hazel Clark won the 1,500, in which UT freshman Brittany Steffey finished fourth. Kameisha (Bennett) Martin won the 800 in 2:07.28, ahead of runner-up Sarah Bowman (2:07.47) and fourth-place Phoebe Wright (2:08.83).

Bowman and Wright both notched NCAA regional-qualifying marks.

Jeneba Tarmoh was third in the 100 (11.46), Lynne Layne third in the 400 (53.78) and Celriece Law third in the 100 hurdles (13.38).

Women's Swimming: UT's Aleksa Akerfelds is the SEC female freshman swimmer of the year. Akerfelds was the fastest freshman in three events at the SEC meet, the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 500 free and the 400 individual medley. Teammate Martina Moravcikova also made the All-Freshman team in the breaststroke.

Christine Magnuson, who was earlier named SEC female swimmer of the year, was UT's member of the community service team.
