ATHENS, Ga. — Family members disclosed Saturday that longtime Georgia radio announcer Larry Munson had successful surgery on Friday to remove blood clots on his brain.
Munson’s recovery period is not known, but family members said he is expected to make a full recovery following the procedure to correct the subdural hematoma.
“I was really pleased to hear that Larry’s surgery went well on Friday,” said Georgia athletic director Damon Evans. “All of us in the Bulldog Nation wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
Munson, 85, was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens on Thursday. Tests revealed the blood clots.
Due to health problems, Munson worked only home games and the game at Georgia Tech during the 2007 season, his 42nd calling Georgia games.
WSB’s Neil Williamson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he saw Munson after Georgia’s G-Day spring football game on Saturday and said Munson was pleased to hear about the strong play of running back Caleb King.
“He smiled real big when he saw that,” said Williamson, who said Munson is expected to remain the primary play-by-play announcer in the 2008 season.
Munson’s family provided the following address for anyone wishing to send cards or letters: Larry Munson, c/o UGA Athletic Association, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603.

Wasn't he guy who coined the hobnailed boot comment during a TN vs GA game in Knoxville?

Guess it was from that hobnail boot from the Georgia pounding last year that did him in...

Before Munson went astray, he was teamed with Milo Hamilton to broadcast The Atlanta Braves. Many hours were spent growing up in Middle Tennessee seeing Hank Aaron, Joe Torre, Clete Boyer, etc. through their vivid descriptions. I would prefer to remember Munson for those memories instead of his idiotic hobnail comment. Get well and thanks Larry.

Please, Vol fans, let's have some class here, hobnail boot or not. Please don't put us on the same level as Alabama fans. We all wish him the best for a full recovery.

I have no problem with Munson. I think all schools should have a big-time "homer" announcing. Nothing wrong with we and us. Love him or hate him, Munson is a legend.

I meant no disrespect with the Hobnail Boot, I agree with TommyJack about legend status. Get well and hope he gets to announce when we give him six many times over this season.

02Champs should be ashamed of his comments.

TJ, he is THE homer. No one else comes close that I've ever heard. I believe on his "greatest plays" calls, two or three of them he forgot to say Ga scored. Was at Vandy for awhile.
That said, wish him well and the wisdom to know when to say...."when".....

PD; I know. I had to put up with him for years. But he is revered in dawgville. Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott...brother I can still here him after all these years..and that was against FL.
Used to hear him on WSB talk about non-dawg things...man. And some call me a curmudgeon!

To a Tennessee fan, this would be like having this happen to John Ward. Show some class guys.

I'm not...he'll be fine...and he understands the spirit in which i meant it...AND John Ward would NEVER make a comment like that in the first place...now kiss my class, georgia fans.

Well, did he ever apologize for the hobnail boot outburst? Or he and the rest of the Dawg nation thought it was just fine? Still, we don't wish him ill.
