Former University of Tennessee men's basketball coach Buzz Peterson withdrew his name from consideration for Toledo's coaching vacancy.
Peterson, in his first year as director of player personnel for the Charlotte Bobcats, issued a statement through the NBA team Monday. It read in part, “While there are things I miss about being a college head coach, my focus now is helping to build the Charlotte Bobcats into an elite NBA franchise. I am happy where I am at this point in my career and (am) not currently seeking a job at the collegiate level.”
Peterson told the Asheville Citizen-Times late last week he had talked with Toledo about the opening. Multiple people with knowledge of the search told The Toledo Blade that Peterson and athletic director Mike O’Brien discussed a contract but the talks broke down.
The Toledo Blade reported Monday that Peterson had been the front-runner for the job and was believed to have visited the campus for a formal in-person interview over the last few days. He has 11 years of head coaching experience, including four years at Tennessee, along with stops at Appalachian State, Tulsa and Coastal Carolina.
Last week Bobcats managing partner Michael Jordan told the Charlotte Observer that he did not anticipate Peterson leaving the organization but would not stand in his way if Peterson found another opportunity. Peterson was reportedly a finalist for the Texas Christian job that was filled last week by former Kent State coach Jim Christian.

Buzz is a nice guy, just like Fulmer.

I don't know if there is another newspaper in America that covers former fired coaches as much as the KNS.
I am looking forward to the mid-season Delmonico update.

When I was making my transition from the AD department at Coastal Carolina...I had a run-in with Buzz Peterson. As we walked down the long corridor hallway, he quickly Buzzed by me like a bumble bee from the District of Columbia.
He said "Greetings, Ronald." I replied "It's a great day to be alive" He responded with a Buzzing sound "The King Bee will Buzz back to the glory days" As I watched him walk down the rest of the corridor..I said to myself "How Blissful"

IF KNS could ever do any REAL reporting they would have already told us about the CURRENT Tennessee coach chasing this job!

Translation of what Buzz said, as long as I am not offered a college coaching job, I will stay with the Bobcats.

Pennington: Adams accepts editor position with Baton Rouge newspaper, the Advocate.

I wish we would hire Buzzzz back and Chris Ferguson

Good thing Buzz knows Michael Jordan otherwise he'd be flipping burgers at McDonalds. Knowledge of basketball and coaching are two things that he knows nothing about. Did I say that it's a good thing he knows Michael Jordan?

Buzz also said that we were going to make more free throws than the other teams attempt just like Fulmer said we were going to be good in 2005.

Buzz loaned MJ his shoes one time. And oh yea Buzz was player of the year in NC one year instead of MJ. eb502 is right, if Buzz didn't know MJ he would be a complete unknown. Talk about someone riding coat tails.

We need more articles with updates on Buzz Peterson, Jerry Green, and Kevin O'Neill. Vol fans fail to remember that Buzz Peterson and Kevin O'Neil have the fewest losses of any UT coach in the NCAA Tournament.

You know, it is a shame that some of you bash Buzz and for no reason whatsoever....some things work out and some don't...just because he didn't do as well as you may have wanted, no reason to continue on him....he's doing fine and obviously has more faith in UT than his so called fans did in him...agreed it was time to move on....but leave the guy alone....

Buzz and Bruce proved that given the same players, winning is all in the Coaching.

Still can't believe we fired Jerry Green to hire Buzz. I'm not saying we necassarily should have kept Green... but Buzz Peterson? Something about a paper bag comes to mind.

The funny thing is that not one of you idiots complained about Buzz Peterson when he was hired. It's amazing how accurate your "after-the-fact" analyses are.
Find another team to deride.

First post. Played against Buzz in HS. Smart player, but one of the laziest defenders I ever went against. I liked him as a person, but never feared playing him, and everything he has ever done related to BB is overrated, and everything he has done since he graduated from UNC has been due to MJ.
Pearl's first team at UT, IMO, exposed Buzz once and for all. Remember that Tulsa team Buzz inherited that had just been to the NCAAs? Buzz promptly took the same team and a year later he had them...in the NIT. Then he left before anyone he recruited played there, so his ability as a coach at the highest levels was never actually proven when he got here. Then Pearls takes Buzz's kids, who the year before couldn't even make the NIT, and get's them to the dance.
Buzz has ridden the UNC mystique and MJ's roommate routine to great fame and wealth, while accomplishing absolutely nothing other than being a nice guy.
Do I sound bitter? :) Sure, but it's also all true.
Pearl is worth 100 Buzz's.

Best of luck to you, Buzz. Too bad the UT AD decided that a coach who could win games was desirable.
I'm glad we don't have to hear "We were just snakebit" again.

The UTAD should send Buzz the big black curtains they had to install at TBA as a keepsake.

Truth is Dean Smith withdrew Buzz's name from consideration. Seems the godfather of the UNC family didn't want Buzz out there tarnishing the family's coaching rep. That's why MJ stashed him in Charlotte in the 1st place. Lebo is on thin ice.

You know, I have honestly never followed UT Mens Basketball very closely. Having lived out of East Tennessee for most of my adult life and never having much tradition to get excited about in the first place, I just lost touch. The closest I came to excitement was the Houston years when I was in High School. Sure, I heard Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson's names, but I guess I always half expected mediocrity from whoever occupied that coaching job.
Having said that, it really disappoints me to see people of obvious intelligence and literacy heckle to such extremes a former UT coach. Does anyone here honestly think that Buzz Peterson inentionally ran UT BB into the ground? Where was UT BB (in all honesty) when he took it over? It seems to me that any coach with an ounce of ego would be in the business of putting 100% into his job. Sure, maybe Peterson couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag, but at least he came to UT with the desire. It seems that the least we could do is thank him for the effort and wish him the best at whatever endeavor his career presents. The downright vitriol is amazing. But what should I expect? Look at how we treat one of the winningest current FB coaches in the nation!

Keep the Buzz articles coming so EB can keep in practice with his character assassination blogs. I feel sorry for someone who has that much hatred for someone they don't even know personally.

Hot but sorta spooky fake Pricilla hair. I'll take the far more classy Juli Boeheim any day.
Aren't we all just sooooo juvenile?
We make fun because we love the Vols, and don't appreciate it when a coach get's rich off all of us who pay thousands of dollars a year to the VASF, while the coach accomplishes nothing. Sorry, but at this level, all's fair. See Jerry Green.

BO Jeff I did complain when we hired Buzz. I also complained when he ran off a number of players because they were not good enough. I complained when he brought in a bunch of transfers that were nothing but trouble at their previous programs. I complained when he was signing division two talent or players that read and spoke on a 6 grade leval. I complained when he blamed everyone and everything when his team lost. I was a big supporter of Jerry Green at the time of Buzz's hire. I was unaware that he had alienated the entire local fan base. I believed that a coach that made the NCAA's every year he was hear deserved a longer stay.
I think I was probably wrong about JG but thats because I was unaware of how much he was dispized by the locals.
But I can tell you I had a strong dislike for Buzz from the get go (I think I was proven correct in my thoughts).

vol_in_lsu_land, Peterson was thanked for his efforts to miss the NCAA tournament 4 straight years after Green got them to the tournament 4 straight years to the tune of a 1.4 million dollar buyout. I think for that amount, he can handle a little criticism.

Buzz signed Boomer Herndon, Matt Dotson, Damien Harris, Justin Albrecht, and John Winchester. Who?? He ocassionaly got a nice player like CJ Watson and Major Wingate. He didn't know what to do with them as evidenced by Buzz's record with them vs. Pearl's and Bradshaw's transformation as a key to the team.
Buzz did talk about CJ Watson needing to be more a leader for 3 years though since he was a PG.
