COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says his starting quarterback candidates were about even at the Gamecocks' second scrimmage of the spring.
The numbers Monday agree. Sophomore Chris Smelley went 14-of-19 for 143 yards and junior Tommy Beecher was 13-of-19 for 142 yards. Beecher had the only interception.
After the scrimmage, Spurrier said if he had to play right now, he would probably rotate quarterbacks.
The running game again struggled, gaining just 37 yards on 30 carries. But Spurrier suggested South Carolina's run defense might be much improved over last season, when the Gamecocks allowed more than 209 yards a game.
Junior tight end Jared Cook was the top receiver with six catches for 48 yards.

USCe will get some good wins but overall end up about where they've been the past couple of seasons. Spurrier is finding that recruiting to Columbia isn't exactly like recruiting to G'ville.

Weak running game? Good for our D line. Knowing spurrier he will have a good passing game, but we will have our secondary waitting on them. I think the 08 game won't be the nil bitter 07 was.
