Tennessee women’s basketball assistant coach Nikki Caldwell will be at UCLA on Wednesday, interviewing for the school’s coaching vacancy, a source said Tuesday.
Caldwell, who interviewed with UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero and associate athletic director Petrina Long last Friday at a Dallas airport, has emerged as one of the top two candidates to fill the opening left by Kathy Olivier’s resignation. The Los Angeles Daily News reported that Colorado coach Kathy McConnell-Miller was on campus Monday interviewing for the opening.
McConnell-Miller is 41-53 in three seasons at Colorado. The Lady Buffs were 19-15 this season. Before Colorado, McConnell-Miller spent six seasons at Tulsa, where she compiled 91 victories.
Caldwell just completed her sixth season as a UT assistant on coach Pat Summitt’s staff. Caldwell played a coaching part in the Lady Vols’ second consecutive national championship. A former Lady Vols guard, Caldwell began her coaching career as a UT graduate assistant (1998-99) before joining the staff at Virginia.
After Friday’s interview, Caldwell described the UCLA opening as a “great opportunity for the next head coach there. Everything is in place.”
