Elzy joins staff at Kentucky

Kyra Elzy, a former standout with the Tennessee Lady Vols, has left the Kansas women's coaching staff to become an assistant coach at Kentucky.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Elzy said. “I couldn’t pass it up. As much as I’ve loved Kansas, the staff and these players, to be close to home where I grew up and back in the SEC, what I’ve known my whole career after playing at Tennessee, is just a great opportunity for me.”

Elzy filled the vacancy left by former teammate Niya Butts, who left the Kentucky staff to become coach at Arizona.

How long will it be when the majority of coaches in women's basketball either played at UT or was an assistant under Summitt?

Pat Summitt is a great teacher and going to one of her practices is Basketball 101.

Pat's "coaching tree" will be an entire forest before too much longer!

Things just keep getting better in women's basketball. This is great news. Too bad Niya Butts chose to leave the SEC, but what better replacement than her teammate?

where can we find a list of former UT Lady Vols who are now coaches. Hey knoxnews, maybe that would make a good article?

Good Luck Kyra! (only not against Tennessee) you were always one of my favorite players.

How many former Lady Vols are head coaches or assistants today? Somebody has this information at their fingertips......Probably in the Athletics office.......Laura, you are right on.

If Nikki Caldwell goes to UCLA, why don't Pat get Holdsclaw to join the greatest coaching staff in world? Is this a good ideal or not?

VolMomma...I think it is a great idea...if Holdsclaw has that demeanor...wonder how she is doing with her battle with depression?

Sorry folks, but Holdsclaw would not be a good choice as a coach. Historically, superstars are not good coaches or managers. The NBA is littered with examples. These superstars usually do quite well as GMs or Player Development Directors, but not coaches.

One of the reasons for Pat's success is that she was a GOOD player who worked HARD to achieve upper level success. Pat knows ALL the steps in a type of move or technique, thus she is able to teach that player to be better if the player works hard at improving.

Holdsclaw skipped all the lower level steps that we had to work so hard to master. Her God-given talent allowed her to pass go and move up to more complex techniques way ahead of other players. Patience is also not one of her strong qualities, so we need to bury this idea. Nice concept but unrealistic!

Besides, she walked away from basketball in an attempt to regain control of her life. Why should she step back into the highest pressure position in basketball? No, it is just not a valid theory.

tenn32rebel I couldn't agree with you more! Well said and I couldn't have said it better myself! I tell you who would be an amazing coach one day (eventhough I'm pretty sure she will pursue law school) is Nicky Anosike! A real work horse...and student of the game! She knows her role and executes it to a T! Those kinds of players are definitely the BEST coaches! Take time to think about it! Rest assured...Pat will get the best!
