Lady Vols eliminated in second round of SEC tennis

After one quick win at No. 2 doubles, the Tennessee Lady Vols stay at the SEC tennis tournament ended on Friday.

Vanderbilt romped to a 4-0 quarterfinal victory to advance to today’s semifinals at Auburn, Ala.

“We have been battling a number of injuries for quite a while now and they simply caught up to us today,” UT co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. “With that said, Vanderbilt played great and was the better team this afternoon. They did a good job of keeping us from getting any momentum going in singles.”

The No. 12-ranked Lady Commodores (18-4) watched UT’s Ghizela Schutte and Rosalia Alda grab an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. That was the highlight of the day for the Lady Vols (14-9).

Vandy went on to take the other two doubles matches to win the first point.

Then the injuries started to hurt the Lady Vols. Prior to the start of singles play, UT coaches learned Caitlin Whoriskey and Jennifer Meredith would be sidelined with injuries and the Lady Vols had to forfeit a point at No. 6 singles.

Vandy’s Amanda Taylor went on to defeat UT’s Schutte, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and VU’s Taka Bertrand closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Zsofia Zubor.

“We’re really looking forward to the opportunity to get a couple of weeks off from competition so that we can rest up, get healthy and be ready to play our best tennis in the NCAA Tournament,” Hahn-Patrick said.

Schutte honor: Ghizela Schutte, UT’s lone senior, was named to the SEC Community Service Team for the second consecutive season. The Cape Town, South Africa native serves as the vice president of UT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

She helped with tennis clinics at the Boys and Girls Club of Knoxville, participated in a canned food drive at the Second Harvest Festival, was a volunteer receptionist at a free medical clinic and teamed up with Knoxville mayor Bill Haslam in the I-Walk Main event to support walking in the community.
