Men's golf team starts 7th at SEC

Defending the SEC championship isn't going to be easy for the University of Tennessee men's golf team. After Friday's opening round of the SEC tournament the Vols are sitting in seventh place at the Frederica Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.

No. 9-ranked Tennessee got off to a sluggish start and managed to regroup for an 8-over-par 296.

"We just got off to a slow start and we did not play well on the front nine," UT coach Jim Kelson said. "But I was proud of the way our team responded on the back nine. We played well and we hung in there pretty tough.

"We are in seventh and in position to have a good round tomorrow and move up. Although it was not the start we wanted, I was proud of the way they salvaged a decent round."

No. 2-ranked Alabama has an 11-stroke cushion on the Vols and the lead at 285. No. 1-ranked Georgia and No. 7 Florida are tied for second at 290.

Alabama's Joseph Sykora in the individual leader after firing a 4-under 68.

For UT, sophomore David Holmes is leading the way with an even 72. The former West High School star was steady with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars.

Senior Philip Pettitt and freshman Robin Wingardh are two shots back tied for 24th place after 74s. Senior Charlie Ford had a 76 and junior Chris Paisley a 77.
