Hopson's big night in New York

Tennessee basketball fans already drooling over the impending signing of Scotty Hopson have more reason to drool.

Hopson, the outstanding shooting guard from University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville, Ky., is a firm commitment to UT but his actual signing is Wednesday in Hopkinsville.

Part of the reason for the delay in signing was his participation in the Jordan Brand Game on Saturday night in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“Participation” is an understatement after Hopson scored 21 points and pulled down four rebounds as the Blue Team pulled away in the second half to beat the White Team 124-114.

“We came out with a different attitude in the second half,” Hopson told ESPN.com. “We had fun; it was Madison square Garden after all.”

Vols signee Renaldo Woolridge had a quiet showing at the adidas Derby Festival Classic in Louisville. The small forward scored 2 points on 1-of-5 shooting for the Gold team in a 128-121 loss to the Black team. He missed on two 3-pointers.

Scotty, you are going to have a great time wearing the orange. Can't wait to see you sign and make it official.

I've been trying to find highlights to this game - apparently Hopson threw down a pretty nasty dunk on somebody. Anyone know where to look (other than the obvious youtube)?

bflynn2. I have also heard that Pitino is making an 11th hour run at Hopson. Kind of makes me nervous.

Hope you stay longer than 1 yr. Might as well go to Juco if you are planning to stay for 1 yr.

For some reason I've never felt like his commitment was firm. I know all the Big Orange fans are sitting with fingers crossed. He can make the difference for us next year. Please, Scotty...please don't fold under the pressure.

Stop, Stop, Stop the crap!!!!!!! I heard Hopson is thinking about signing w/ Louisville. that is the real reason for the delayed signing and there are also reports that pitino has visited Hopson's house when he was in New york. Where are you getting all of your information bflynn2 dude? billnewton relax, the guy is tired, I've been there before. Mentally he needs to rest and sign on Wednesday as planned. Don't rush the guy, he won't put himself through another Miss State situation. Peace

bshone-

The dunk was nasty!! I can't remember who he threw it down on but he came in from the wing, got way up and took the contact from the defender across the face, and jammed it home with one hand with authority!

You also can't find a box score anywhere. I think Hopson was the second leading scorer and he only played what seemed like about 12 minutes. Demar Derozan, the USC commit, was getting all the minutes and he wasn't doing much with them.

Here is the real news, my dad's friend knows Tony Jones (assistant HC). Hopson's delay is cause of the trip to NY for the game. Pitino, has contacted Hopson, but according to my dad he has backed off a bit, Hopson, is commiting to UT, at 12:00 o clock.

Badge, I think it meant that Pitino visited Hopson's house in Kentucky while Hopson was in New York, talking to Scotty's parents. That's only a guess, and the only one that makes sense to me. I would be shocked if he backed out on his commitment to us after all this time, but, as I have said before, no one knows what goes on in the minds of teenage boys. I've got my fingers crossed!

I heard somebody has been trying to talk some sense into him and get him to reconsider the Tenn. situation. Memphis's Tyreke Evans was the star of the game. We will probably get 2 more from that game, Ebanks and Witherspoon. Will be another great year for the Tigers.

knoxvegas-

Thanks for posting the box score. I was looking for that for a while and couldn't find it anywhere. I guess Hopson got a few more minutes than I originally thought.

Overated-

Hopson would've had a better stat line than Evans had he not played 7 fewer minutes. You should go share your Memphis enthusiasm with some other Tiger fans on one of their boards 'cause no one here gives a sh!t. It'll be another great win for the Vols when we beat ya'll in K-town this year.

We have had no problem beating Memphis the last 2 years with their supposed better talent. The next 2 years should be no prolbem with Willie Kemp and four freshman starting for them next year.

Posted by overatedvols on April 21, 2008 at 1:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Like I said, Evans was the best player out there. You can try to change it around all you want but it doesn't change anything. He was the MVP and your Hobson was not. Ha ha..you guys really make me laugh how you try to twist things around to make it better for the Vols. We are getting the top recruits in the nation and you aren't.
Move on to football. You do good there (with the exception of Florida always beating up on you) but leave the basketball to the Men (Memphis) and not your boys. We were in the national championship game this year. You weren't.

On your counts knoxvegas you have
tenn 2 and memphis 0

You only went back 2 years. Let's go 3.

Tenn. 2 Memphis 1

After this years game:
Tenn. 2 Memphis 2 So what then? You will have just lost your bragging rights. It will be even and we will have the better team and gone to the national champ. last year while you faded away to nothing.

After next years game, the following year.
Tenn. 2 and Memphis 3 oh no..

I don't see Tenn. winning again for many years. You better enjoy things while you can.

oh and don't forget that hopson didn't even visit louisville like he was supposed to after coming and giving a verbal to tenn.seems to me he would at least visit an athletic dept. before signing.

You spend alot of time on here. It is funny that you gloat over one aspect of your school. You guys were number 2 in the final poll of mens basketball. We were #7, And our ladies were #1. Were were yours? And our football team ended at #14. Were were yours? ok. I guess you can keep talking about the only part of your school that is worth crap then. Should we come to your board and ask when the last time you have won a championship is. In anything. Maybe when you are older than 12, you will have some intelligent responses. You will not even acknowledge this post will you? Thought not.

Hopson shot a better percentage, scored more points per minute, had more rebounds per minute, and turned the ball over 5 less times than Tyreke, so all awards aside, Hopson did more to help his team win in the time he was on the court than Evans did. I'm sure if you asked Evans he would probably agree.

I dont count the first year because BP didn't recruit them....

Calapari will never lead you to a championship because he can't handle the pressure of big game situations. He doesn't call a TO to set up the foul ok...but then not calling one after the 3 to set up a play and get it in to the hands of a shooter not dozier.

You class is not better then ours and it all depends on returning players. You lose CDR and your not as good, we lose T Smith and were not as good. If either of us keep them we are above the other.

Whew..it really tears you boys up that Memphis has the better program. As I have said in the past. We'll give you football, no questions there. Will give you ladies basketball. Certainly no question about that and we'll give you badminton if you want it but the Memphis basketball progam has you. It's better ..always has been. Probably always will be.
Wow, so according to these posts Tyreke Evans just stunk in that game. Not a good word for him. Ha.. he was the mvp people..come on now.
I really don't see Tenn. beating Memphis again for a long long time. I mean two flukes is enough. This time they'll take the game serious and bye bye vols. Still, you might as well join in and root for us as we once again make a run for the national championship. Maybe with your 'star'? recruits you can get past the sweet 16 but i'm not betting on it. I think you will have a major drop off this year. Won't even be compettive in that exposed weak SEC conf. Wish we had more SEC teams on our schedule so we could pad our wins with those teams too. My prediction is that Tenn. will not see a win against memphis for the next 5 years we will become your football florida. Always better.

knoxvegas, you're right. The fact that he has overated misspelled as his name should have been our first clue. The fact that he refers to our wins the last two years as flukes is the other. We blew Memphis away in K-town two years ago and played tougher in their own building this year. Let the troll come on here and spout his "wisdom." Meanwhile, reality shows that we have won 2 in a row and will make it 3 next year.

Posted by BADGES0413 on April 21, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I saw our schedule for next year and we play MTSU 2 days after Memphis. It is good to know that we can rest most or our top line players against Memphis to get ready for MTSU. They should be the 3rd best team in the state next year behind UT and Vandy.

Posted by IdahoVol on April 21, 2008 at 3:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

overrated - the name is appropriate to your team. You continue to post how Memphis State has always had the better program. I used to live in that rat hole and jumped at the chance to get out. I used to hear how great Memphis State was and how UT couldn't match up any time they played. And yet when I see the overall record as UT 12 wins, Memphis State 7 wins I just can't figure out your logic.

As a previous poster said, at the end of the day the Tiggers lost two games this year - one of those was to the Vols that you will have to live with forever! Keep bringing in these great players and we will continue to beat them with our mediocre ones!

Posted by IdahoVol on April 21, 2008 at 3:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

By the way, our football record against Memphis State is 20-1 and womens basketball is 26-1. We appreciate you conceding that we have the better teams in these two sports. I guess the Tigers losing 63% of the games played in men's basketball just doesn't allow you to concede that one yet.

I didn't see anyone posting on here that Tyreke "stunk it up" in the Jordan game. He just didn't out-perform Hopson given the fact that he got 7 more miutes of playing time and only outscored him by 2 with 2 more RBs and he wasn't on the winning team.

Overated-

Your posts are the same every time and so are our responses. You are a loser. I don't even think that you come across a lot of resistance when you argue that Memphis has historically had the better program, but yet you act as if none of us will "admit" it so you can continue to post your childish garbage. On the other hand, you can't cope with the fact that we beat you two years in a row and counting, we've got a 2 to 1 all time advatage and even though memphis has more "tradition" and has gone farther in tournament play, they don't get it done against the Vols. The best you can do is to count wins that your team hasn't gone out and earned yet. You can't talk sh!t for a game you haven't played yet; it's just that simple. I bet you were talking trash about the whuppin memphis was goning to put on us this past year right up until the game proved you wrong. Bottom line is that we don't care about your recruits. We don't care about your "tradition". We don't care about your success or lack thereof. I would imagine that most of us actually liked to see memphis succeed when they weren't playing the Vols before you started posting. I know I did. You're on our site trying to spark a rivalry where there isn't one. If you guys have so much tradition then why do you care so much about UT and what UT is doing? Bottom line, I've said it before and I'll say it again, you guys are second rate. You have a good basketball program and everything else about your school sucks. We know that you feel threatened by our newfound success and that's why you feel the need to come on our site and talk trash. it is your own insecurity that is talking the trash. If you guys win the NC next year and we get knocked out in the sweet 16 again, we will still have a million and one other reasons to be thankful that we are Vols and not Tigers.

Hey ya'll - my wife's uncle graduated from KY and has a friend who lives in Knoxville but knows a secretary that works for Memphis that is married to a guy that went to Louisville who used to live about 6 miles from Pitino's house and had a cousin that drove by every day and the word is that Hopson was seen at a McDonald's last week sippin' a coke with two girls next to him that both had red shirts on and were talkin' to a dude that wore a Miss St hat but had a UT shirt on and orange laces in his shoes. So my wife's uncle by her third stepdad says that Miss St might be back in the picture but it could be that UT is still the choice unless, according to Hopson's niece who lives in Memphis, he can get to wear one of those white suits like Pitino has to his signing press conference and then he might surprise everyone and call it all off and go play in Europe for a year before coming back to the D-League if the NBA adds another year before guys are eligible for the draft. AND THAT IS THE ABSOLUTE GOD'S HONEST INSIDE SCOOP THAT I GOT FROM A FRIEND OF A UT USHER!!!!

OrangeBleeder..wow..impressive. Still, you are mistaken. I'm not trying to create a rivalry and feel free to support our Tigers. The reason I am here is due to what the Tenn. fans did on our site after the Tenn. Memphis game. You think i'm bad. Oh, i'm good. Those people.. all 200 or so talked really bad and most of their posts had to be removed and some were banned. It went for days... until you lost to Vandy and it stopped. Then evidently so many were just dying to go over and talk trash again but.. we kept winning and they couldn't Finally when we lost the national championship many came back... talking trash due to a national champ loss when you guys looked ugly in your two wins. Also, you state that nobody is denying that Memphis has had a better program/team.. Oh really now. Sure they are. Vol fans can't stand to admit that about memphis. So, it makes it a bit fun.
IdahoVol, you got out of rathole memphis and went all the way to wonderful Idaho. I wouldn't be talking about Memphis potato farmer.
BrownieVol, how about an ice cream sundae.
Thank goodness the Griz season is over. I couldn't stand the misery of that mess any longer. At least Gasol got his first playoff win over the weekend. Why did they trade him? Don't you think that was pretty ignorant ...trade your best player. That heisley.. have to wonder about him. Don't you.

Still, if nobody appreciates the truth I'll leave. I had left once before very nicely. The trash posters around the time of the championship game came back to the memphis board and brought me out of retirement.
OrangeBleeder if you like Idaho so much why don't you head over that way. I think they have room for you. I don't think too many people live there. Wyoming might be good for you also and let's not forget the Dakota's. I'll take Memphis and it's elite basketball team any day. I try to stay away from the thug/dump redneck/hillbilly stuff but you guys always head back there. It's so hard to have a mature intellegent conversation on here. It's disappointing. Do you want me to leave??? I do enjoy dropping by to distrupt things and i'm only telling the truth. Never use bad language like some of you.

Sir, is there any truth to these rumors?

volguy-

That's a low blow. Unless the article changed gears on the last page, it wasn't his fault that he was in that position. He's lucky to be alive.

better at losing to tennessee than any other school( with the exception of florida)
mempiss tigirls 7 for 19 = 36%
TENNESSEE VOLS 12 FOR 19 = 63%

I saw Scotty play on TV. He looked silky smooth, as advertised, and confident. Wow!

Overated-

I do live "over that way". Also, I have family in Wyoming and used to have family in Idaho. That's the great thing about the internet. It works all over. As far as having a "Vol enemy" on here, we have plenty of them in the form of disgruntled ignorant fans who think they are better suited to coach our teams and run our athletic dept than the people on the UT payroll, so yes we would like you to leave. Trust me, you won't find me posting on the memphis boards. I could really care less about memphis anything.

overatedvols - are you really a Tiger High fan or just trying to look stu stu stupid?

Seeing that his older brother is his guardian, I would doubt that his mother spent a whole lot of time baking pies for her boys. However, I would imagine that if you grow up in the projects it is very hard to fully remove yourself from the violence and negativity that surrounds you, especially those violent and negative influences that are related to you. Also, they were shot at first so had his cousin not had a gun to retaliate with one of them might have been the one who got killed and had the other guy been a better shot the murder charge would've been given to to the other party. I don't really think that a 1st degree murder charge should be given out if he was in fact shot at first.

but that what the article wanted us to believe that those three were essentially good boys ie..the pie and not a product of their enviorment wich i agree is violent.thats why i say,i wasn't there and what i get from other articles is, it was just the four of them and one wound up dead.now i'm not saying tyreke is a bad kid but like i said he is a product of his enviorment.so it could be that they were all looking for trouble and maybe his cousin is just taking the rap for tyreke knowing that if he does tyreke would wind up making millions and he could serve his time and be a rich man too.just playing devil's advocate.

FritterVol you ask if i'm trying to be stupid and yet you ask the guy about his post and if it's true (DSavol). If you believe that junk then i've got a potato farm in idaho to sell you.
OrangeBleeder i've read the posts on this site and you are right you have a lot of very whiney people on here. They complain about everything. Very negative.

and mark thats what crazed fans do go to the site of the other team and gloat over victory. you guys have fans, and you're probably one, that would have done the same thing had you won.so at least admit that.

overatedmark-
What a terrible fan you are---spend your time on the opposing team's site...If thats not bad enough--its the team that has kicked your favorite teams ace 12 out of 19. The reason it hurts you so bad is---Your team had its best year ever, except for the fact of getting spanked at home by your Big Brother UT VOLS. This shouldn't be such a shocker for you, since your team has lost 12 of 19 to the BIG ORANGE counting 2 in row and getting worse. Thanks in part to Mr. Scotty Hopson.

overatedvol: Probably well before you were born there was a great rivaly between Louisville and Memphis. This never quite rose to the heights of the Cards vs Cincy, but the future of Memphis went down the tube with the Tiger's virtually held captive in a Conference that struggles to be more than a three school league. Beyond UAB and Houston, what'ch got? You best be grateful UT keeps you on the schedule or you would regularly sink below the radar one you entered conference play.

Everyone remember to watch Tiger highlights tonight. Tune your TV dial to A&E about 10 Eastern/9 central time for the First 48. I hear that Dozier will throw down a sick backhand to his baby momma and gets an and one when her new boo walks in unsuspectingly.

Facts are stubborn. They don't go away. 38-2. Title game. 3 first round draft picks. Naismith Coach of the Year...for 2nd time, NBA coach. 3rd consecutive Elite 8. 2 #1 seeds and 1 #2 seed in 3 years. 2 Memphis assistants this year going on to be head coaches at Marist and UMass...following 2 others at Lamar and UTEP in 4 years. 5 5-star recruits coming in this year. Check the boards on 2009 recruits and their lists: Memphis on 16 of top 25 lists. FDX Forum. Top 35 media market. Memphis recruiting rejects wind up at ut and ole miss. 16 of 19 players that did NOT go pro GRADUATED...while the uthugs lost a scholarship due to NCAA Academic Performance Rate shortcomings (see Tennessean). The Memphis Law school first time bar pass rate is 20 percentage points higher that ut. FACTS, FACTS, FACTS. THEY JUST DON'T GO AWAY. VOLGIRLS ARE GREAT.

I see a that every time we have news on B-ball, some memfuss dude starts talking. Did it hurt your little feelings that this news was on someone other than memfuss. Bet all them pro players from U.T. are glad they don't have to settle for a lawyers pay. Could go to U.T.'s killer forensics program and would have plenty of job security working in memfuss!! When was the last time memfuss made it out of their own city in a football bowl game,HA,HA,HA!! Go across the board, not just your law school or your B-ball team. You sound like a nerd with all this law school talk. Lots of us have college educations, and that has nothing to do with your tigers B-ball team getting rocked 2 yrs. in a row by a FOOTBALL school! Get your facts str8 itsme537924579. DAAAAA

For those of you who missed the game, it will be re-shown on ESPU on Wednesday at 5:30, Saturday at 10pm, and Sunday at 9:30pm.
The announcers were too busy making conversation than actually following the action, so be on the lookout for #30 on the blue team.
Go Vols and welcome to Big Orange Country Mr. Hopson!

CORRECTION:
It won't be re-shown on Saturday...just Wednesday and Sunday.

jm318...again I know it for a fact and I also know for a fact that the AAU guy wasn't even in the room when Hopson committed to coaches during his visit. But as most do here, believe whatever street crap you want.

As for the NY game, PLEASE just remember that it was nothing more than a pick-up game against some other HS guys - yeah, they are supposedly the top guys but it doesn't really matter when there is NO defense being played. I hope Hopson comes in and makes AA but I'm not getting excited about a HS version of the Rocky Top League.

Gen. Fritter - WHAT RUMORS MAN????? Can't you see from my post that I have ALL the connections covered on this????? Everybody needs to relax, the kid will sign tomorrow and the ink will be ORANGE.

Facts are straight moron. Facts are stubborn in that they don't change. 2nd Tier schools such as the uthugs... have little to hang their hats upon..except that they have beaten an elite school 2 years in a row. No doubt, that IS significant. Facts are facts, they don't go away. Continuing, the uthugs and their "un-nerdy" fans (that's because there are no academic "trophies" in Knoxville) measure the strength of their program by one game: Memphis. Memphis, being an elite national program, measures its success by its national ranking, its RPI, and its advancement into the NCAAs. Since the uthugs cannot survive such measures, they must hang onto the 2 out of 3 wins over Memphis since Pearl arrived. Pearl himself said "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" regarding getting bounced out of the NCAA tourney....on the Final Four show. You little morons are betting your arguments that you will continue to beat Memphis...in spite on having ONE 5-star versus Memphis having 5 5-star recruits...to add to Dozier, Taggert, Anderson, Mack, Kemp and Robinson (all top 50 recruits). Facts. They are stubborn, and they don't go away. Like the fact that you acknowledge your law school is 3rd in TN though. Thanks. Facts.
