Tennessee men's basketball recruit Scotty Hopson "relished'' the spotlight in his national prep all-star game Saturday night while Vols' signee Renaldo Woolridge had trouble finding it.
Hopson, expected to sign with UT at a press conference in Hopkinsville, Ky., at 10 a.m. Wednesday, scored 21 points in the Jordan Brand Classic at New York City's Madison Square Garden.
Hopson, a 6-foot-6 heir apparent to All-American Chris Lofton at shooting guard, even made ESPN's top-10 plays with a left-handed dunk before the crowd of 7,000 and was the lead to ESPN.com's story on the game.
Hopson was 8-of-13 shooting with four rebounds.
Woolridge wasn't as successful at the adidas Derby Classic at Louisville's Freedom Hall, making one of five shots to finish with two points in front of 10,193.
Woolridge, a 6-8 wing from North Hollywood, Calif., was a late addition to the game and was playing with a sore knee.
UT assistant Jason Shay would not speak specifically about either player, but he said coaches don't worry so much about scoring in all-star games as a general rule.
"It's more about the prestige of being invited to games like that and the competition,'' Shay said. "If some of those players were born two years ago, some of them would be talking about being drafted in a couple of months.
"We don't worry about points in all-star games, because hot players tend to get the ball more and take more shots, and it can go either way.''
Shay Says: Eventual national runner-up Memphis was in the Elite Eight when Shay concluded teams weren't defending the Tigers like the Vols did.
UT used its "10'' defense to collapse on the Memphis players when they penetrated and limit the Tigers to just eight baskets in the lane and no dunks.
"I would have thought somebody would watch the film from our game or call us,'' Shay said when Memphis reached the Elite Eight. "Mississippi State (which nearly upset Memphis) was the only team to do what we did.''
So what does Shay think about the way Kansas defended Memphis in winning the national title?
"They defended them almost completely like we did,'' Shay said. "Yeah, I do remember saying nobody had watched film of our game with them. … I kinda said it tongue-in-cheek.''
Remember him? Chris Singleton, a Florida State signee once highly sought by the Vols, also played in the Derby Classic and didn't fare much better than Woolridge.
Singleton, a 6-8 forward, was 2-for-5 shooting.
Still, Singleton left an impression with NBA scouts, who told Louisville columnist Rick Bozich that Singleton was one of the five-most talented players in the game.
Future Noah? Few Florida players drew the wrath of Tennessee fans like former Gator Joakim Noah, but it appears there's another worthy rival on the way.
Ray Shipman, a 6-5 guard who signed with Florida, hit four 3-pointers in the Derby Classic and then proceeded to taunt the Kentucky fans at the game by doing the Gator Chomp.
Still Out There: Ater Majok, a 6-10 Sudanese native, used his 7-4 wingspan to score 14 points and pull down five rebounds in the Derby Classic.
Majok, who lived in Egypt for seven years before moving to Australia, according to the Louisville Courier Journal, made visits to Maryland, Baylor and Kentucky and will visit Connecticut before signing with anyone.
Scout's Scout: Here's what Scout.com says about Hopson: "Very quick first step, exceptional penetrator, great leaping ability … can defend the best perimeter players in the Class of '08.''
Sounds like Hopson might be the right tonic for future Gator Shipman.
Lofton working: Lofton is back in Knoxville working out with hopes of being invited to the NBA's pre-draft in Orlando, Fla., next month Lofton said it's his understanding that 60 players will be invited.
"I've just been working real hard, running, lifting and doin the stairmaster," Lofton said. "I was shooting today and my arms started shaking; just tired."
Lofton will finish up his Spanish class before returning to Maysville, Ky., to continue workouts. He said he will leave UT six hours short of graduating, but the two remaining classes can be taken online.

Let's just hope that all goes as planned with Mr. Hopson Wednesday morning.

Hmm, I had heard Hopson doesn't like to hustle or play D but that sounds good to me!!
I know he didn't play any D in the McD's AA game and the JBC but it's understandable since those aren't "real" games.

yemmusdarb -
I guess it would be pretty hard to have 2 steals a block and four rebounds in 18 minutes without playing some "D" huh? Those were Scotty's stats from the Jordan game. I thought he did a pretty good job of using his length to get into the passing lanes and disrupt. You are one of the most negative bastards on here. I hope one day some Vol comes along that you won't feel compelled to complain about b/c he'll have to be the most incredible athlete ever to walk the earth.

He could handle some work on D. But he has the tools. He is long and much quicker than lofton. As much as I liked lofton going to the hoop and free throw line, he can't compare. This dude can go to the hoop and straight flush it. The dunk in the allstar game was nice but, he slaughtered the 3's, slaughtered!

Here is what I don't get. Here is UT, which Bruce has done wonders with using maybe average talent. The vols play a marqueee sched, on TV a ton.
Okay, we get maybe one mickey-d's guy. The other 3 seem like decent players, but they are not THE GUYS. Okay, now here is memphis, barely playing and adequate sched, on TV SOME, but not too many key games...and they just ROLL in the talent.
I don't quite get it, but I guess that is why I don't make the big bucks a coach does.

Well mparker, I'm going to go out on a limb here and since Calipari destroyed umass with his questionable tactics. I think what you tell these kids has a lot to do with it. Bruce seems to be an incredible man. Taking his team to see the holocaust museum and teaching them to be the best young men they can be is a little more noble than telling guys no matter what. We will get you to the NBA. I am sure that some get there. But for the kids that don't make it. I would much rather them have The Pearl as their coach so they can understand what college really is about. Education.

I was surprised to see our recruiting class didn't crack ESN's top 10 in the nation. Somewhere in the high teens to low 20's. Surprising....

I have been reading some stuff out of Kentucky and it seems as though Rick Pitino has been making a late push to try and get Hopson to change his mind. Granted, most of it is probably rumor, but some of the information sounds legit.
If he changes his mind....then Louisville can have him. I for one am getting a bit tired of the drama that comes with this kid.

Rick Pitino was making a push BEFORE he committed to UT, and the Louisville radio shows were hopeful back in February that they would get him. Not saying he can't change his mind, but there is nothing new here.

55Vol, It's because Hopson's not official yet. Wait til Wednesday at noon, then go back and check the recruiting ratings.
For those of you who missed the game, it will be re-shown on ESPU on Wednesday at 5:30 and Sunday at 9:30pm.
The announcers were too busy making conversation than actually following the action, so be on the lookout for #30 on the blue team.

The two things in the article jm318 linked us to that impressed me most about Hopson were Hopson's apparent dedication to defense and his religious faith. The first reassures me that he realizes that success in basketball isn't all about highlight-reel dunks. The second shows me that, despite some remaining flashes of immaturity, he has a foundation of values that will help him grow up in the right way. The most amusing thing was the UK fans telling Scotty he ought to come to UK so he can drive a Mercedes. Does that mean that all UK recruits come from rich families or is that a normal bennie for UK students? Otherwise, I'm sure the NCAA would have heard about this(;-P)!

Har har har.. you guys crack me up sometimes. Reading this story with your assistant coach saying that the reason nobody else had sucess against memphis was that they didn't guard them like Tenn. did. So, it seems in his mind Memphis lost that game due to Tenn. playing well. Give me a break. Tenn. didn't beat memphis that game..memphis beat memphis. They played their worst game of the year that night. They were lethargic and would not even run for lose balls. Their shooters could hit nothing when they were wide open. It had little to do with Tenn. We had teams play every kind of defense there is and then some and it didn't work for anybody. Kansas played some of the best defense in that nation (ask north carolina) and we still had them by 9 until the collapse at the end. The truth is that when we played the Tenn. game we played poorly..were in a slump. At the end of the season they stepped it up. If Tenn. had of played Memphis in the tournament they could have used any defense they wanted and we'd still have beat you by 25... only the truth and you know it.
As far as the comment that Pearl is so wonderful and took the players to the Holocaust museum ..give me a break. He also said what's more important in the long run.. a chance at the nba or doing things like going to the holocaust museum. Hmm.. let's ask the players. All of them have NBA aspirations. Only a few will make it but Memphis has a record of preparing them for the next level and so that's one of the reasons they come. Calapari is not so much a salesman like Pearl. At least you don't feel like you're getting conned with Calapari.
I do hope your boy Hopson signs with Tenn. cause i'd almost feel guilty beating with next season with the amt of talent we will have vs. yours. At least this will make it a bit better for you.

Tennessee's defense caused 31 teams to look lethargic, Memphis actually looked scared playing against UT this year. I think Memphis is getting used to losing to us, it does beccome habit forming. Marcus Camby did not feel like he was getting conned with Calapari, $$$ up front when you are 18 makes it easier to get the signature. A tiger coach does not change his stripes, so I wonder how he is getting the supposed 5 stars to sign this year. Next years win for UT will be a lot easier since it will be Overrated(your nickname fits him) Willie Kemp and four freshman against UT. I think Kemp was a 5 star recruit and he looked pathetic most of the year.

overated, you're right to an extent Memphis did beat themselves. That was the strategy, take away the dribble drive, watch your guys get enamored with the 3 ball that they can't shoot, and then when they're playground ball breaks down, watch them panic. All we had to do was limit drives (we did), rebound (we did) and watch you trip over yourselves (you did). Stick to your own site.

Wow, that's quite a list VolBadge but let's not go back to the 50's and 60's. I'm talking about now. The reasons players would rather go to memphis than U.T is that Cal. prepares them for the next level. I'm not talking about what Don Devoe did. I'm talking about nowwww.
Also for those of you that want to continue to say that Tenn won the game due to their defense, i'm so afraid you see basketball thru orange eyeballs. We played against some of the best defenses in the nation when we were on our run thru the tournament. Teams that would put Tenn. to shame and even UCLA's miserable slow down and they all were outclassed and stunned. Tenn. defense was not exceptional in anyway. At least Vandy, Ark. and Louisville didn't think it was and oh let's not forget Texas. I've still not heard anybody say why the memphis game ruined the vols. What do you suppose it did to them? They had nothing left after that game.. not for the rest of the season. The two most important events of the season..the SEC Tournament and the NCAA..they were already gone by the time they got to those. They might as well not even have went. Could have just sent out a bulletin.."We're sorry we will not be playing in the tournament. The Memphis game just destoryed us"
Just reading the articles about the MVP Tyreke Evans in the game Sat. Looks really good. Should fill in for Rose nicely. After all Rose was the top high school prospect and so is Evans. Maybe if Tenn. had of promised Evans a trip to the Holocaust museum he would have gone to Tenn.

evans is not the top high school prospect greg monroe is and tyreka was on the losing team and the memphis game did nothing to tenn.losing by three to vandy and one to arkansas is not losing badly had it not been for the missed free throws, wich i'm sure the tigirls no all about, we would have won those games.

Sorry OrangeBadge I thought Earle Barron still played for Miami. I guess not huh? I guess also that Rodney Carney was just cut in the last 24 hours because I just say him playing a few days ago and when did Boston cut Shaun Williams their first round draft pick. Hmm..seems your list is strangely missing a lot of Tiger players but I'm sure any Vol that was cut within a week is on it. until the last few mins of the game when calipari brought in the second stringers.) I believe Calipari has a team first concept not a me first concept. His teams usually get along and do whatever it takes to win. Trust me Evans will be here probably with his 2 buddies believe Witherspoon is also a top 10 highschool prospect and of course Ebanks. He has a chance to get significant playing time so hopefully he'll come thru. Now if we could just get fat fulmer to get with it. I've heard rumors that he's gotten so big that he looks like a large orange pumpkin down on the sidelines and when a team makes a big play with big yardage, 3 assitant coaches have to tip him over and roll him down the sidelines to get him to the new line of scrimmage.

"If we had gotten that rebound, and if we had played like we're capable, and if we hadn't came out so flat, and when we beat ya'll next year, and he should be in better shape next year, and if, and if, and if." You are such a f@ggot loser that it is pathetic. See ya next year when ya'll lose another one, chump.

Boy, the name calling, how immature. We are suppossedly adults here. Let's at least keep it on a 10th grade level.
Hotllama2 (where's 1?) I don't think my spelling or writing is that bad honestly. I get the point across. I didn't know this was an english course. I see after making your statement, you went to great care to make sure your post was grammically correct, with carefully placed commas and periods where they should be. Very good...i'm sure everybody on here will save your post and name it the perfect post. Now... please get a life. If you are talking about my spelling it just means you can't think of real issues. I'm definitely not a closet Vol fan. Can't stand the basketball team but I do like your football team. I've said it all along. My beef is just that you people just hate to admit that little ole Memphis is better at a sport. So, it's kinda fun to remind you. I don't think you'll get an argument from memphis people over sports where it's evident the vols are better.. such as football but boy you guys just can't bring yourself to say Memphis is better than you in basketball.
Brownie, I believe Tyreke(no. 1 ranked prep player in the nation in several rankings) will sign just after your star recruit Hobson. Tyreke Evans is rated 1 in some rankings. There are many. I have not even mentioned our new forward Angel Garcia. In the top 15 of most ratings. Gosh, it's just hard to contain myself.

Listen, overated, I went through no more trouble than is necessary while typing my entry. I simply did things the correct way. I find it hard to believe that in your haste to post your mindless drivel that you overlook correct spelling and punctuation. There's is a right way and a wrong way. I didn't stoop to name calling, and as adults we should be able to engage in contentious banter while still keeping it civil. You come on here and throw around ridiculous tidbits of information about Memphis basketball, on a Vols site, and expect everyone to bow down and admit Memphis is the next powerhouse. How about admitting a few things yourself? UT got the best of Memphis the last two years. Memphis is the armpit of America and might as well become part of Arkansas, and finally that Memphis is the basketball equivalent of THE Ohio State Buckeyes the last few years. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
P.S. Yes there is a #1, and he doesn't like Memphis either.

Should that be:
Listen, overated, I
or
Listen overated, I
Hmm.. please try to get these things correct. You are trying too hard, placing commas in places they shouldn't be. "Engage in contentious banter" huh.
Please leave and go to an english bulletin board and also try grading some of the other posters. They are far worse than me but I don't really care about that. As long as I can understand them, that's all that really matters.

(For UT posters)
Actually chief, either way is gramatically correct. It all depends on where you want to place emphasis. That's all beside the point though. While they may not teach correct English at Memphis, I got a solid education at UT. The reason I don't grade other posters is because they don't come on here from other schools talking trash about how great their respective institutions are in comparison to the VOLS. Memphis is a good team, no doubt. I'm not trying to say that they aren't. I'm just saying you want to talk about how great they are and I felt compelled to remind you of the last two years' head to head matchups with UT. Your arguements are all hyperbole (I'll wait while you look that up) and speculation while talking about next year. Mine are in win columns.
(For Memphis posters)
yo your junk is wak, dem vols be da bomb. neks year goin be nasty yo. scotty gonna bring it airy day. yo know what i be kikin da truf.
P.S. overatedvols, I dumbed things down for you Tiger fans a little bit to make it easier to comprehend. By the way, there are two r's in overrated.

Overated @ 12:26 "at least you don't feel that your getting conned with Calipari." Yeah sure - isn't he the same guy that said "we hit our free throws when we need to?" Based on the results, sounds like a con job to me. Or maybe "we tried to foul at the end of the game." Yeah sure - find anyone else that watched the game that would agree with that statement and then see how many would agree that Cal came up with that as an afterthought to cover up for his sorry coaching (or lack of) in the last few minutes. Can you say deer in the headlights? I thought you could.

Badges0413. Face it, we do not have a whole lot of room to brag about getting players drafted to the NBA. Kentucky owns that category hands down with more players to the NBA than Tennessee or Memphis combined. I believe they have sent 91 players to the pros, with 10 or so playing currently.
I bring this up as I think it will be important for us to send some players to the NBA in order to recruit on a high level consistently.
Hopson will help this figure I think as he is most likely a one and done player.

Hotllama2 i'm well aware of the spelling of overrated. I have been reminded of this many times but I did it on purpose. I wasnt' trying to spell it correctly.
Now, once again while you are so busy correcting my spelling maybe you should have spell checked your own. I do believe arguments is not spelled arguements. Ha you are so busy trying to be cute that you make yourself look foolish.

Titan, I still don't think Calapari put his foot in his mouth. All season long he said he was not that worried about free throws that they had not cost us any game and that when it mattered they would hit them. Well, they didn't cost us any game during the season and then when they got to the tournament their free throw shooting percentage went way way up. I believe 70 something percent.
They missed them at the end of the Kansas game but
they had their best free throw shooters up there. They had been hitting most every free throw all thru the tournament. I just believe they got nervous..call it choked if you want but I still do not believe that poor free throw shooting ever cost them a game up until then and you could have had 90% shooters up there at that time and they very well could have missed them due to the pressure. So, don't think it was their bad free throw shooting that got em. It was how nervous they got in the end. Like i say, a great free throw shooter could very well have done the same thing. They had stopped playing to win and were only trying to survive the last 2 mins. It cost them the game. Still, national runner ups ain't bad.

Well Well tigger high decided to get out of the bunker he's been hiding in ever since his beloved thugs choked in the final. Oh well tigger high you can come to k-town next year and get beat for the 3rd time in a row. You aint got no game tigger high. You'll always be tigger high wishing to play in a legitamite conference.

overated, At first I was surprised that you found a grammatical error within my own post. Good job, I concede defeat. I was shocked you knew the correct spelling. Then I remembered that "arguments" is spelled the same in English as in Ebonics.

Longwinded explanation there overated that doesn't really say much of anything. Convenient that you didn't address Cal's out and out lie that they were trying to foul when obviously they weren't.

Better watch it eduardo. Don't be spelling
legitimate as legitamite. Hotlama is patrolling the board for spelling errors. Of course her posts are no better or no more correct than anybody elses but..shhh. let's not tell her. It might hurt her feelings.
eduardo "his beloved thugs choked".
Whew... the tenn rednecks choked too.. vandy, ark and louisville, and really american and butler.
So, they both knew how to choke last season.
