Spurrier says Beecher starter for now

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has told a group of Gamecock fans that if the season began now, Tommy Beecher would get the call as starting quarterback.

The head of the Laurens County Gamecock Club, Doctor Don Worley, says Spurrier made the comments Tuesday night. Athletic spokesman Steve Fink says Spurrier is on vacation and unavailable for the rest of the week.

Spurrier declined to name a starting quarterback after Saturday’s spring game when Beecher, who will be a junior next fall, and Chris Smelley, who’ll be a sophomore, combined to throw eight interceptions.

Smelley threw five interceptions and three TDs. Beecher had three interceptions and one touchdown.

Smelley won four of the six games he started a year ago. Beecher did not start a game.

What else can he say? He only has 3 guys, one of them is suspended forever, one of them smells, and that only leaves Beecher....

I can't believe that Stephen Garcia has compared himmself to Bret Favre. He is more like Jerry Garcia than Favre. Always on the wrong side of the law. I'm glad that Crompton is a great role model for our younger qbs. Ainge was too.

Maybe Garcia meant that he resembled Favre when Favre was hooked on percodans...or that he'll be playing football this year in Levi's jeans as well.

Its fun watching OBC struggle. Then again, he still finds a way to play us tough and/or beat us even while struggling.

If I considered myself an "offensive genius" but my QBs threw 8 picks, I'd go on vacation too!

Are we supposed to care?

Hopefully they save up a few INTs for Berry and company to run back. I'd hate to get to the Carolina game and the cock QBs already be out of them.

"Athletic spokesman Steve Fink says Spurrier is on vacation and unavailable for the rest of the week." Apparently, Spurrier told the Finkster it was time to play golf.

vtvol-

That's funny as hell!

I wonder if the thought of not coming back from that vacation has entered the OBC's head? He probably vacations in Gainsville to reminisce on the good ol' days. However, our QBs threw their fair share of picks this spring too so I guess people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, and like us they have a pretty darn good secondary back there making plays.

Lee Corso picked SC winning the East and playing for an SEC championship this season. I thought it was a slip of emotion, but he continued to stand firm on his prediction. I'm thinking if your QB's are going to throw a combined 8 int's in a spring game, you might want to reconsider your prediction mr. Corso.

That being said, SC always plays tough. Don't think they can hang with the likes of UT, GA and FL as usual, but who knows....stranger things have happened.

Oh, and I think GA's overrated hype will be just that.....hype.

oh my goodness, how much will tEB's rep rise if he just dominates USC year after year, that fumble recovery coulda been a TD if not for that facemask, (and/or ryan karl getting in his way earlier) , SRY OBC #14 is the reason all your QBs have nightmares

Georgia gets to play Bama for the next two years during the regular season. Now they will get to share a little of our joy. GO VOLS!!

Actually this will be the last season we play bama 'till 2013, it's every five years. We beat'em in their backyard, now they come to our house to get their butt beat again. It was a close game last season, it went in OT and expect a better Bama team this year. It'll be another nail biter.

I don't think we're overhyped by any means nor are we overrated. Are we jealous there son? Don't bother, it's just the media yapping. You have to know that the media does all the hyping. But I can assure you, Notre Lame, Ohio State and Southern Cal, to name a few, gets all the hyped. Buckeyes are always overrated, IMO, they shouldn't have been in that BCS title game.

From what I've heard from the players/coaches, we'll approached one game at a time. We can't overlook any of our opponents regardless of their ranking or record... remember Appy.

sic'em dawgs!

Spurrier and SC get ready for a butt whoopin by UT, at your own home. Gamecocks got no "game".

badawg44, Saw a little more info on what I was pointing out to you the other day.

Your OL 2-deep will consist of no seniors, 1 Jr (seems to be a career back up), and the rest sophs/Fr. You'll once again have true Freshmen in your two deep.

I have little doubt that they are talented players. I have even less doubt that they'll be coached well. I do doubt that an OL that young is going to run rough shod over the better SEC defenses week-in, week-out. That's why I doubt your statement that Moreno is going to be an automatic 5-6 ypc.

The ONLY way I see that happening is if your receiving corps is better than last year taking the pressure off the running game. But that's the biggest unknown on your whole team. Henderson saved the Bama game for you. Bailey was pretty well the only consistent WR you had.

You'll have two teams early with very good defenses to test you- USCe and ASU. USCe has an exceptional secondary returning. That young OL won't have any time to grow up. You can count on USC loading the box to stop the run game. If you can't beat USC's secondary... you won't beat UT's.

UT lost its best 3 WR's two years ago and did well this past year. It happens. I'll just have to see it happen at UGA before I'll buy any of the hype or believe that you'll have an unstoppable running game without a consistent passing game.

UTfan4life,

USC probably has the best returning defense on UT's schedule.

Spurrier hasn't had that fertile recruing ground that easily stocked three championship caliber college teams year in and year out, and sent other players all over the country. But more importantly he hasn't had Bob Stoops, who was his DC during most of the years of his dominance in Gainesville. Since Stoops left, not so much dominance and we all know Steve doesn't have much to do at all with the D. I give him two more years of being bloodied by us Florida and Georgia and then he'll play golf full time.

sjt18.. I agreed with you on our young o-line, but I think coach Searels is doing an exceptional job coaching up these young pups. I believe he'll have his kids ready to play by fall. I like his old school style.. in your face type of guy. That's why I think we'll be okay on the o-line. I'm glad that we're open with Georgia Southern/Central Michigan, so we can get some kinks out of the young line before the gamecock game. I believe the USC game will be our first major test on the o-line. They return 10 starters on D. It might be a defensive battle and it could come down to field goal. I think we can beat the gamecocks because of the depth on our D is deep. Their O don't have a whole lot of playmakers, nor are they deep. They'll struggle on offense. All in all, it might be a close game. Our young o-line will experience a great deal of growing pains with an ugly victory. With 3 game seasoning, we should be seasoned and ready to conquer the tough road blocks ahead.

sjt18.. I'm more concerned about Bama than I am with USC. As a matter of fact, IMO, out of our first 5 games: GaSouthern, C. Michigan, USC, ASU & Bama, I believe the Parole-Tides will be the hardest team to beat. Bama's O looked good at their A-game. I didn't see a much of a differences from Major Applewhite's O. I guess we'll find out when they play Clemson in our naked of the hoods.. ATL.

Ahh, the bye week before Tenn. I love it! It can be a good bye week if you win or a bad bye week if you lose. I can't remember the last time we had a bye before playing Tenn. I think it certainly helped y'all out tremendously last year. It made a difference for us in Jacksonville. Y'all came out fired up! It was a different Tenn team than what I saw at Gainesville. Tenn looked more fresh and was the hungriest team on the field. I think y'all smelled blood before kickoff. In any event, maybe the tide will turn this time around. Even though the vols will be coming to Athens after an easy win against NIU. I'm sure Fulmer will rest his starters.

After resting and licking our wounds with a week off. With some major preparations, we should be ready for battle between the trenches. I have a haunch we might donned the blackout for this game. We need all the help we can get. We'll even throw out the kitchen/bathroom sink. I can already guess it'll be a defensive battle. Our front four needs to penetrate through that front wall. I don't think we sacked Ainge at all the last 3 years. I believe that in order for us to win this game, we have to knock your front wall down and rattle Crompton early. We may have to blitz our LBs some, if we have to. With the experienced 4 DTs and plenty of speed from DE to keep our linemen fresh, we may have a good chance of tearing down the wall. And I'm hoping as heck with Clawson shuffling or flip flopping the o-line around will cause some confusion amongst themselves during the game. Slim chance, but I hope it does happened.

badawg44, I disagree that Bama is your toughest early game. Going to Tempe to play a team returning alot of talent coached by Erickson is your toughest game.

I think Bama at home this year is not only a win but a fairly comfortable win for UGA. Bama has issues at both WR and DB. Saban is talking about finding guys out of this year's recruiting class that can play immediately on their DL.

If you only have 4 DT's with experience, you are no better off than UT. I think UT will be pretty decent at DT at least 4 deep.

If not for CPF's and Chavis' recent success against UGA, I'd be inclined to count that one a loss. Whatever mystery there used to be for Chavis concerning Richt's O is gone. Until I see UGA actually field an O improved over last year's version, I won't believe it. Since UT's D looks to be significantly improved that's a net plus for the Vols.

OTOH, UGA's D may be improved as well. None of us really know whether Clawson's O will work or not though most seem optimistic. He did inherit 9 returning starters and roughly 18 or 19 out of the two deep from a decent O last year.

sjt18 - the main reason why Tennessee did so well against Georgia was the TN players were playing to save Fulmer's job. An inspired football team can accomplish a lot. Remember how good Nebraska looked in Osborn's last game? Maybe not the same thing, but you get the point.

Also, GA may have overlooked UT last season. It would be understandable given how badly they were wacked against Cal and Florida early.

Hueypilot,
Bob Stoops was in Gainesville 96-98. SOS dominated the SEC with and without him. But he didn't win a NC without him.

General, If the game had been even remotely competitive or if it hadn't followed the blowout win in 2006 then I'd be more inclined to agree it was simply a case of UT playing over their heads.

UT was definitely inspired. Maybe that gives them the win against a more or less equally talented team... but it can't explain the absolute domination in that game.

I "like" Richt more than CPF if that makes sense. IMO, he's one of the classiest, most talented coaches in football. However the fact of the matter is that CPF has pretty well owned him for the last few years. The last two haven't been competitive.
