A pitcher's duel went to Mississippi State. An offensive shootout went to Tennessee. The result was a doubleheader split for the No. 10-ranked Lady Vols in Starkville, Miss., on Saturday.
Game one turned into a late-inning letdown for UT (46-10, 14-9 SEC). The No. 23-ranked Bulldogs (39-17, 12-12) staged a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to squeak out a 2-1 victory.
UT had five hits with the two big ones coming in the sixth inning, an Erinn Webb triple followed by pinch hitter Danielle Pieroni's RBI single up the middle.
Down to its last chance, MSU scored two runs in the seventh to hand UT freshman pitcher Ashton Ward the loss.
In the nightcap, the Lady Vols pounded 14 hits in an 8-6 victory.
Leadoff hitter Kenora Posey led the way by going 5-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Webb was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Tiffany Huff 1-for-4 with a big two-run double in a five-run third inning.
Megan Rhodes started the game at pitcher, but gave up two runs on three hits in the first inning. Ward (27-4) relieved her and picked up the victory.
UT and Mississippi State settle the three-game series at 2 p.m. today.

What has happened to the pitching?? A dominating fast pitcher is necessary to win in todays college softball. The two current hurlers are not getting the job done as we have been use to in the past few years. come on coaches--do some recruiting--they are out there. 14-9 in the SEC is not up to par.
