The 10th-ranked Tennessee track team had to find room on the plane for another "wheel."
One of the most prestigious trophies in collegiate track and field is a coveted "wheel" won at the Penn Relays.
UT's Matthieu Pritchett, Evander Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Rubin Williams made sure the Vols didn't come home empty handed.
The 4x200 relay team won a Penn Relay title in front of an announced crowd of 49,831 in Philadelphia on Saturday. UT ran the event in 1 minute, 22.20 seconds at a windy, historic Franklin Field.
The only thing that would have made the day better for Williams would have been bringing two wheels home. UT finished a close second to LSU in the 4x100 with a time of 39.21.
"It was a good accomplishment and good feeling to win the 4x200," Williams said. "It's my first wheel at Penn and we had a real good shot at winning both relays."
Tennessee's victory was the 32nd all time for the Vols, fifth-most in the history of the 114-year-old event.
"We had a very successful day at the Penn Relays," UT associate head coach George Watts said. "The sprint crew had a great day with a very competitive 4x100 that featured the best handoffs of the season.
"They came back 55 minutes later as heavy favorites in the 4x200 and did not disappoint. It was great to see Rubin Williams and Matthieu Pritchett come away with a victory at the Penn Relays in their senior year."
UT's 4x800 team of Yarrick Kincaid, Axel Mostrag, Paul Cross and Andrew Dawson finished fourth (7:25.44). Dawson ran a 1:48.6 anchor leg.
At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, UT's Nick Panezich finished fifth in the discus (166-0) and Akeem Hardnett was sixth in the triple jump (51-2 3/4).
Women's Track: It was a silver medal kind of weekend at the Penn Relays for the Lady Vols. For the third time in three days, UT took second place in a distance relay event, this time the 4x800 on Saturday.
Kimarra McDonald, Phoebe Wright, Brittany Sheffey and Sarah Bowman ran an 8:32.60 to finish less than two seconds behind the winners from LSU.
The Lady Vols had previously finished second in the distance medley relay on Thursday and the 4x1500 on Friday.
"Of course you want to win, but you have to, as a coach, realize what just happened," UT coach J.J. Clark said. "There are very few teams ever that have put together performances like that, and we were the only team to run all three of those races and be able to be right there in every one of them. It was very, very impressive."
The Lady Vols' 4x200 relay team of Lynne Layne, Cleo Tyson, LaTonya Loche and Jeneba Tarmoh finished fourth (1:34.73).
Junior Celriece Law turned in a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a season-best time of 13.37.

Where does Phoebe go to school, linc? Her name has escaped my radar -- probably because I was goofing off. Is she a Lady Vol? Off to Google...

To shoalcreekvol: since you must be a professional journalist, I will take you negative comment as a high compliment!

linc, we gotcha! Enough! ;-)
BTW, I think shoalcreekvol was referring to the headline of the story, not your post.

billvol,
OUCH! sure did!
Bit slow on the uptake I am. :-(
After posting, I realized ... !!!
So for my post, how about: "Rocky Top Miss Wright Hits Top Time" :-)
BTW, has anybody noticed Phoebe Wright's impressive performance improvements this season?

Great headline! It's nice to see Chattanooga people do well in track and field. I noticed in the paper today that a decathlete from McCallie has committed to Ole Miss. Hopefully Phoebe can peak at the SECs and NCAAs and bust a good 800.
