Vols' recruiters get jump toward 2009 prospects

UT commitment Hall invited to try out for U.S. Junior team

The fall signing date for basketball is more than six months away, but the Tennessee men's basketball staff has started to zero in on hot prospects.

Kenny Hall, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., made a verbal commitment to sign with the Vols.

Hall, the No. 28 player in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals.com, said he'd be a Vol back in March.

Now comes news that Hall has received an invitation to try out for the U.S. National junior team in July.

"I'm excited, but I can't wait until this time next year when I'll really be getting ready,'' Hall said. "I like that class we (Tennessee) signed - we'll be set. I'd like to play with Scotty Hopson, but I know he's real good.''

So is Hall.

Hall led the Georgia Stars to the Final Four of an AAU tournament in Starkville, Miss., last week, averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds despite playing with a slight groin pull.

Hall averaged 24.6 points and 12.6 rebounds for Redan (Ga.) High School his junior year before committing to UT coach Bruce Pearl after the Vols defeated Kentucky in Thompson-Boling Arena.

"I think my strength is anything in the paint,'' Hall said. "I can hit the mid-range jumper and take people off the dribble or post them up.''

Hall would assume the scholarship held by power forward Ryan Childress, who will be the only senior on the roster next season.

UT, however, will likely pick up at least one more scholarship.

Forward Tyler Smith explored the possibility of entering this year's NBA draft before opting to return for his junior year, but fans shouldn't expect two more years from the talented Smith.

Incoming freshman Scotty Hopson, who signed with the Vols last Wednesday, is a possible one-and-done player. Hopson, the No. 5-rated player in the Class of 2008, has been projected as high as No. 15 in the 2009 NBA draft.

There are a few hot prospects already being lined up for that anticipated opening(s).

Point guard Mfon Udofia from Miller Grove High in Stone Mountain has UT listed along with Texas, Xavier, Clemson, Virginia and Georgia Tech.

Udofia, 6-2, 180, shut down five-star prospect Nolan Dennis at a recent AAU tournament in Arkansas, playing what Rivals.com described as "in-your-face'' defense. He is rated as the No. 36 overall player in the Class of 2009 and No. 5 among point guards.

Leslie McDonald, of Briarcrest Christian in Memphis has long been on UT's wish list.

McDonald, at 6-4, 195, is the No. 17 overall player in next year's class and No. 5 among shooting guards, according to Rivals.com.

McDonald is believed to be considering Duke, Georgetown, North Carolina, Memphis and Ohio State.

Jon Hood, a 6-6, 185-pound shooting guard from Madisonville, Ky., is getting a long look from the Vols, among others.

Ranked No. 39 overall and No. 7 among shooting guards, Hood recovered enough from a broken wrist to score 20 points in one half at his last AAU tournament.

Hood also is considering Duke, Kansas, Louisville, Indiana and Purdue, among others.

Tournament Field: The field is set for the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 27-30.

The Vols will take part in the eight-team tournament which also includes Michigan State, Gonzaga, Maryland, Georgetown, Siena, Oklahoma State and Wichita State.

I say hold out on another PG until 2010, because there is a player out of White Station in Memphis named Joe Jackson who is supposedly the next Allen Iverson. Maybe having J.P. at UT will be a good pull for us, since he played there a few years ago.

I'd rather use Tyler's scholarship on Leslie McDonald and Scotty's on a second SG if he leaves after next season (not Hood though, I just don't think he's got the penetration ability to score 15/gm).

If we got McDonald and another 4 or 5 star SG in 09 with Hall as a PF, then Joe Jackson in 2010.. that'd pretty much be 4 starters right there.

I'm thinking Hopson will be in for 2. It just depends on how well the Vols do, and he does. I've read a few clips that indicate his fundys aren't all in place yer.

We may get another one out of Memphis as well. Marlon Brown, the #2 rated wide receiver in the nation for next year, wants to play basketball along with football. Tennessee has been the only school that has put the full court press on in both sports. I thought this might be just BP helping out Phil at first, but this kid is considered by some to be a sleeper in basketball. Plus, he would not cost the basketball team a scholarship. While he is being recruited by almost everyone across the country, I hear that Tennessee has been the most agressive by far. Pearl was in town to visit with coaches last week and the whole offensive coaching staff for football was in town today. Fulmer was also the first major head coach to make a visit back in the contact period.

This kid will be a star..he is physical specimen. 6'5 and has a nasty vertical

In Bruce we trust . . . CBP will get the players we need to compete on a national level.

Well, as far as Jon Hood goes. He is a good kid, but not sure why he is rated soo high. I am from his area. He has some good games, but then some bad ones too! I know for a fact if he had to choose today, Tennessee will be tops on his list and some of his family of course wants him to be a wildcat. His dad his mentioned Jon will make a decision this fall (october-ish)As far as duke on his list, they have since pulled out.

Hopson is also near my area. He is awesome, but an attitude problem and you got a problem with his mom too! She was wanting him to go to MSU. I hope the rockytop basketball league will knock him down a level and make him see he has some growing to do. But i will say he is 90% one year and done. I just hope he stays out of trouble he can be a good kid.

Is this article trying to say McDonald is considering those five schools in addition to UT or just those 5? I'm hoping it's the former and not the latter.

Great to see that so many highly-rated prospects are giving us such hard looks these days. Today's basketball recruiting is a merry-go-round that spins faster all the time. Now that we are on it, we have to really hang on or it can throw us off in a hurry. A team that signs "one-and-dones" has to KEEP ON signing them year after year or it can become irrelevant in a hurry. It's a good thing CBP is a really energetic guy, because these blue-chip guys really like to be wooed. I just hope the chase doesn't detract from the energy he typically expends on on-the-floor coaching.

i thought the same thing bigbluevol...are we on the outside looking in? I thought we were at least on his short list. oh-well...Bruce will get the players for his system and we will continue to win in basketball like no other time in school history. Go Vols!!

utfan15govols:

I would like to know where you got your info on Hopson. From the ESPN report that I saw, his coach, principal, and teachers say he is the most down to earth athlete they have every seen at that school. He is quiet, cares about his school mates, and is a good student. Did ESPN get it all wrong? And this would not be the first time that an 18/19 year old goes somewhere other than where Mom/Dad wants them to go. They had to sign the scholarship papers, so they didn't have that much of a problem with him coming to Knoxville.

The Jackson kid out of White Station is something else. During the State tournament Oak Ridge shut him down for the first three quaters.
Then he got mad and scored 20 on us in the 4th and they squeaked out a victory. Not only can he dribble, pass and shoot. He can hit the free throws which is big.

hey markie i would worry about the recruits you got coming in this year.and iwas just on espn.com and i don't get where you guys say you're an elite program.i checked the polls and low and behold both tenn and memphis didn't pop up til' 05-06 and neither has won a title so we weren't the only "pedestrian" team.and as i look harder when memphis started winning was about the time when all the ggood schools left c-usa.could it be that the only reason why memphis does so well in post season is you are never truly tested during the course of a season and you are not spent because you don't play in a tough confrence wich makes it easier to go longer in the post season because your team has more energy.no you're not elite and until you win a title you won't be.just like us.

Memphis gets all kinds of reasons and excuses as to why we are a great team or from people trying to say we aren't. Last season the thing most people said was ..sure they have a good record, look who they play. They'll never be able to do anything when they play the good teams cause they won't have any experience with tough teams. Well, so much for that theory. Now we have the..you only win in your conf. cause the better teams left. Whew....what does it take people. We went to the national champ. game beating..no destroying everybody in our path. There was only cincinnati, louisville and marquette that was any good in conf usa. We killed cincinnati this year and marquette wasn't very good and louisville, well you guys were outclassed there but they wouldn't have been a prob for us. We would have probably had the same record if those teams were in the conf. If not, i'll give us one more loss. The reality is that we were just beginning to reach greatness when those teams defected. Louisville made it known immediately that they would not be playing us anymore. Patino wanted no part of us now that he didn't have to. We had the longest winning streak this year. Longest home winning streak, our record over the last 3 years is incredible and so yes.. we are as elite as they come these days. If you managed to dig up some idiot that says otherwise well..we all know espn has a lot of clueless people..soo.
Brownie, just wondering if you think we will contend for the national championship again this year or will it take a season to get the freshmen ready for it. Vols goal, sweet 16 for 2008-2009. Would make it 3 years straight. As someone on here said the other day..wow.. incredible 3 straight sweet 16's would be unreal.

Mike Griffith has ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE who TN is "hot" on and if you think BP or anybody else in that office is telling him you're as crazy as he is! I guess this ridiculous Griffith stuff and all the "experts" that like to post about guys they've NEVER seen play is the price the rest of us have to pay for the Vols success!

UT could end up with 3 or 4 Memphians on their squad in the next couple of years. I agree with the earlier assessment of Joe Jackson. The one thing Tenn has missed is a point guard. However; everyone is looking at 6-5 Adonis Thomas out of Memphis Melrose. He is just Freshman but already getting rave reviews.

Memphis prospects
Ferrakohn Hall had to sit out most of the high school season after transferring to Memphis White Station, but it was obvious on Friday night that he has been in the gym practicing. Hall looked quite comfortable with the ball, slashing for a team high 20 points in the YOMCA’s disappointing one point loss to the SYF Players. Athletic and long, Hall is the type of combo forward coveted by up tempo teams.

Hall listed Tennessee, Memphis, Florida and Kentucky as his top four schools while noting that it is still an open list. According to Hall, Tennessee and Memphis have both offered while Kentucky is talking about offering. Holding back Hall’s recruitment are concerns about his academics, but Hall said his work has improved since transferring and he is certain he will qualify.

Hall’s inside partner Reginald Buckner has officially jumped onto the national scene with his impressive play Friday night. Every bit as athletic, if not more, as Hall, Buckner blocked three shots as an ever present defensive threat around the basket. Looking good with the ball in his hands, he also scored nine points on only four shot attempts with his new travel team.

Buckner listed Memphis, Tennessee (offer), Ole Miss, Arizona (offer), Kentucky, Missouri (offer) and UTEP (offer).
The YOMCA’s top prospect Leslie McDonald never cranked it into a dominating mode, but he did have his moments, scoring 16 points on 7-13 shooting.

Well, well the first game i got to see him play, he was ejected out (1st half)because of his attitude. He is known in this area for having an attitude and there is nothing wrong with that, just don't let it over take the team. But i think bruce can fix it. Rumors were going around about his attitude so the school tried to dismiss that in my opinion. After all, they are a private school trying to get better players and students in the future.

At times i've felt sorry for you guys though. I mean the way your season went at the end there. Sometimes I feel bad about it. I hope it ends better next season. Overated....The old saying "When if's and buts are candy and nuts, we will all have a Merry Christmas" fits you to a "T". You mentioned in another post that Memphis was just coming into it's prime when the teams fled your Conference. Why doesn't Memphis do the same? Why have they always bounced from weak conference to weak conference? Why have the not joined a better conference instead of always trying to reorganize and stay in a weak conference? I think we all know why...for some reason the Memphis fans don't want to face the facts. If Memphis does happen to beat UT next year in
Bas-etball, what then? Another major meltdown in the NCAA tourney? When you only play 2 or 3 REAL games all year, you are not prepared for the tournament. If TN played the Memphis schedule, we may have been undefeated going into the NCAA tournament. However, Memphis was not undefeated because they lost to the only real team they had played to that point. You can argue that SOME of their other non-conference games were O.K. But face the fact, Memphis was in 2 BIG games last year, TN and Kansas and Memphis lost them both, one on their home court. So PLEASE go back to your tiger den and lick your wounds. You have no business on Rocky Top....you might get hurt.

Posted by overatedvols on April 30, 2008 at 1:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

longtime that post was so ridiculous it really doesn't even deserve a response. Why don't we join a better conference instead of staying in bad ones. Well you tell the SEC to invite us and i'm sure we'll take em up on it. Tell the big east to invite us.. we'll join that one. The truth is we got left out. We'd love to join another conference but we're stuck so all we can do is make the most of it and schedule tough non conference games. The comment about us only playing two good teams last year is ridiculous. The schedule was loaded with good teams. In the tournament we knocked off great teams and if texas wasn't good what does that say about the vols? Then you say we had a meltdown in the tournament? I could have sworn we reached the championship game. I think you are getting us mixed up with the vols. The vols are the one that had the major meltdown. You could barely beat american and butler before getting beat badly against a mediocre louisville team.
Whew, try to at least have one valid argument when you post.

Memphis is a good basketball team, anyone who argues is just biased about their arguement. But they did choke, at least they get extra timeouts next year because Coach Cal decided he wanted to keep them with him. Memphis is more talented than UT however they are not near UT in talent of the coach.
Scotty Hopson will probably be a one and done however with the style the Vols play with spreading the ball around his stats may take a hit and he may not leave (we can only hope).
Also I agree, next year use the scholarship from Tyler on another big player and leave one from Jackson from Memphis.

also, overrated, you don't have any room to sit there and talk about Memphis beating UT. You can say well next year you will beat us, but in truth you could have said that in the past couple of years but you know its wrong then too. Don't pull this well in the past 3 years we are 1-2, next year 2-2, the year after 3-2.

Overated - There is a reason you are not invited. No one wants you. Why...well you know. Yes - MELTDOWN, CHOKE put it any way you want it. How many gaes did you lose? (2) How many others were close? (1 maybe 2) Out coached, out played against Tennessee, choked against Kansas. Even though TN lost to Louisville, the choke of Memphis will be remembered just like the finals against UCLA when the Mighty Tigers (With Keenan & your saviour Finch) lost to Bill Walton.

Quit playing what if....face the FACTS.

If Memphis is so Great why have you not been invited to join a conference? Maybe you should look a little closer at the facts. Not needed or wanted. Just like you here in Rocky Top.

I know you don't want to face the facts...
How do you like being 2nd fiddle?..that is the BEST you have ever been.

shocker0042, not going to disagree with your post either. You are correct, the last two times we have played Tenn was better on those two nights. I agree, how can I disagree, you won.
I've just always insisted Memphis was the better team in spite of the loss. I stick by that and to me there is also no arguing about that.

Overated - No Sense? That is something you know a lot about. Do not respond because there is nothing you can respond with? I believe when the facts are quoted to you, you run and hide in your little tiger den.

Same problems??? We are in a major conference Memphis only wishes they can claim that. If we have the same problems, the TN must be just as good as Memphis. What about addressing major CHOKE of the year. Memphis vs Kansas...when Memphis chokes it is o.k., when TN lost to Louisville, we had a terrible season. When Memphis barely escaped Miss State in the tourn, it is "we played a great team", when TN barely wins, it is "You barely got by". Talk about double standard. So by your post above Memphis had a better team than TN. Which is probably true. So Memphis CHOKED against TN because you lost. FACTS...FACTS...FACTS!!!

Face it overated, in a battle of wits and facts you are unarmed.

I may make a few of the Big Orange brothers upset, but this is a post from you that I can agree on. Conference affiliations have been fluid over the past 15 years...including SEC membership (S Car, ARK). The WholeHOG site regularly lists Hog angst over whether they should have been Big 12 instead of SEC. Look what's happened to ARK basketball after the early SEC years, and they regularly won the SWC. Spurrier at SCar? SCar basketball? Locked in the Auburn/AL/MS/LSU mediocrity...resulting from rural setttings that can't simultaneously attract high name coaches and NBA level talent. The Memphis/Louisville/Cinncinati partnership/afilitation (regularly produced TOP 20, high NCAA advancement/Final Fours in the MO Valley, the METRO, the Great Midwest, and CUSA)will recur in 2010 in a reconfigured Big East; the "Catholics" and the football schools are at war, and their TV contracts will be redone then. Memphis and U of L have renewed the football series beginning this year, and football scheduling is underway with other BEast schools. Memphis--according to Knox News writer Adams--has one of the top 10 "elite" basketball programs to add to the upcoming and reconfigured Big East. 1n 2010, Memphis will have been to 3 more Sweet 16's PLUS, and will have played in 6 bowl games in 7 years. Wonder what the small orange point of argument will be then?

Educated people...are knowledgeable; they can equate synonomous terms. IE: Top 10==Elite. There are 312 D-1 programs...and the TOP 10...are among the top 3.2%, and that qualifies as "elite". Joe Biddle wrote an aritcle stating flatly that the uthugs were "not an elite program" but rather "a rung below the top"...including Memphis...which is "elite". Bruce Pearl said that the Final Four coaches were all "Hall of Famers"...and that kinda sounds "elite". Calipari is an NBA Coach..and--hello--that sounds "elite". 3 consecutive "Elite 8's"...rather connotes "elite". Witherspoon just signed with Memphis today; when finished, Memphis will have nearly 10% of the Top 50 recruits (ut will have 2%)...and darn if that doesn't sound "elite". It appears that educated usage of the English language..hasn't found its way to...Brownsville?

Adding to education, do you people EVER use logic? CHOKE? You people are like Cheeta...who would probably say that Tarzan choked when he once missed a grapevine. LOGIC dicates...that you can only demean someone from a superior position. 106 years, an $80 MM budget, SEC membership...gets you only to the Sweet 16 every 35 years or so? You got your first McD's AA since 98? A 28 point choke against OH ST is a real choke. Do you numbnuts really think anyone is now taking...or will ever take you seriously?

memphis will lose 7-10 games next year and earn a #8 seed in the tourney.

rckydx - at the rate they are recruiting and if Simpkins and Garcia make eligibility they may have the best signing class on paper comparable to Michigan's Fab 5. The final piece is if they get Ebanks and chances are looking positive since he is buds with Witherspoon and Evans. Have to give Coach Cal credit for going out and rebuilding this team so quickly. On the flip side for all the Memphis fans posting here and I love both these teams can we chill for minute on the negative comments as most Vol fans are dealing with the latest concerning Lofton.

it's me i know the english language and i know when someone makes something up to make themselves look better.it's called a LIE,and that's what you did or you didn't fully comprehend the words of mr. adams.i will say this one more time,in the eyes of all sports media and sports fans(except memphis fans)UNTIL YOU WIN A NATIONAL TITLE YOU ARE NOT ELITE MORON.the perception of being "elite" is only in your eyes not the nations.kansas state had the #1 recruiting class in 07 are they "elite", no i would think not.ohio st the previous year and are they "elite"?no they are not.so it doesn't matter how many stars your recruits have or how far you make it in the tourney.until a team, any team, wins a title they are not elite.go to any board of teams that have won and they will tell you the same thing.

Ok Brownie, come on now. You have to win the national championship to be considered an elite program?? We have been to two elite 8's and a championship game in the last 3 seasons. That definitely qualifies as elite. I think if you ask any coach in america they would agree Memphis is one of the elite programs in the country. Something tells me that if we had of won the national champ. this year you would have been saying that you aren't considered elite until you have won two. Give us some credit Brownie. Tenn had a good year and you'll probably have a good one next season but Memphis has been very good the last 3 years.

While we're getting a jump on the '09 prospects, it is good to see the Bug Blue are stooping to new lows!

Scholarship offers to 8th graders?!? Man Billy must really be a drunk. He probably won't even be there anymore by the time this kid goes to college.

Ha Ha Ha!

Brownsfool: KST and OH ST..had great recruiting classes; what has their 3 year record been? How many # 1 or #2 seedings? Sweet 16's? ELITE 8's? How is their 09 recruiting class? How many games on TV the past 3 years (Memphis every game, the most televised program)? Did they have coaching turnover? Are their coaches NBA caliber? What is their NCAA 3 year (or all time for that matter)won/lost record? Average attendance? # players sent to the NBA? % of graduation over the past 10 years (oh that really hurts the uthugs, doesn't it)? So much for your logic. And, your English? Perhaps you should have a 6th grader review it?
