Already down one assistant, Tennessee is facing the possibility of losing another coach from its women's basketball staff.
Lady Vols associate head coach Holly Warlick said Monday that she has spoken with SEC-rival South Carolina about its head coaching vacancy. Warlick declined to comment further.
Lady Vols assistant Nikki Caldwell was hired April 17 as head coach at UCLA.
At least three head coaches are involved in South Carolina's search to replace Susan Walvius, who resigned under pressure this month. One of them has a national championship on her resume.
A source said North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell, a Carson-Newman College graduate who helped guide the Tar Heels to the 1994 title, has interviewed for the opening. Temple coach Dawn Staley likely will be interviewed as well.
Chattanooga coach Wes Moore, who has led the Lady Mocs to seven Southern Conference championships in the last eight years and who coached at Maryville College, also is in the mix.
Warlick spoke to South Carolina officials Friday.
"When you hire good people and they prove their worth, people are going to come after them,'' UT coach Pat Summitt said. "Holly has done a tremendous job here. That's why her title is what it is."
Warlick, a three-time All-American as a player at Tennessee, became the top assistant on UT's staff after Mickie DeMoss departed in 2003. She just finished her 23rd season on the Lady Vols staff and has played a coaching part in all eight of UT's national titles.
"Do I want to lose her? No,'' Summitt said. "But if this is an opportunity she'd want to take if offered, I'd totally support it."

That would be a great opportunity for Coach Warlick.

As a manager, the sincerest form of flattery is to have your direct reports promoted.

yawn....oh wait, I thought this was a football article. Good luck to Holly, hope you stay at Tennessee though.

Say it isn't so, Holly! We want you! We need you! We love you! But if in your heart of hearts you want to spread your wings and try your hand at being a head coach, then all we can say is Godspeed, and if it comes to being a reality, we can only wish you the best of luck (except when you play the Lady Vols!)

No one wants to be an assistant all their career. Good luck Holly. Go Lady Vols!

Holly hold out, there are far better jobs to be had than USC! The lady 'cocks job is akin to coaching football at Vandy...can you say graveyard? Use this to get your name out there circulating and wait until the big fish bites. Women's head coaching positions are finally starting to pay so another year only bumps the price.
Isn't it odd that none of the Storrs hacks are ever mentioned or interviewed for head coaching jobs? I wonder why that is?

WOW. My first thought was there is no way Holly is going to leave UT for another university. She is the glue that holds everything together for Pat and the rest of the staff. I don't want her to leave but, if I look at this from the other side.....
If it is what YOU want Holly, go for it and best of luck. You have given so much to the Lady Vols and we are truly grateful.
But I would really love for you to finish your career with the Lady Vols.

Sylvia Hatchell??? What's up with that? I can't see how the SC job could possibly look as good as the job she has now at NC, unless SC is planning to really open up the checkbook. Of course, I never thought Gail Goestenkors(sp?) would ever leave Duke, either. Sure would hate to see Holly go. That would leave Pat even more short-handed facing one of the most critical coaching years she has had in a while. It would also be very disappointing to the new gals coming in if the assistants most responsible for recruiting them were both gone.

I wish SC would choose Wes Moore. He is capable and has been very successful in Chattanooga. Just keep the remainder of the UT staff in place!

Sylvia just wants to win another championship while she is still in coaching condition. It's obvious she is taking some very good teams to the brink, but for some reason just cannot win the big one. Or maybe it is because they have agreed to play "you know who" and she would go any place to get out of it now that "you know who" has made an absolute sick joke of himself. I wouldn't be surprised to see other elite teams opt out of the agreement.
Wes Moore would be great for the job, IMO. He's done marvelous things at Chattanooga, but have you seen the 'sparse crowds' they draw at home? It's pathetic to see that empty arena at home games. Who wouldn't want to coach in the SEC?
I know some of the SEC teams don't have nearly the attendance that UT has but, if they win big games, it helps. Look at the increase in atendance at Vandy home games.
As for Holly leaving UT, that will be a sad day. She's been there from the get go. Twenty three years is an eternity for an assistant (associate head coach). It's just the price we pay for being THE BEST TEAM IN THE NATION year after year.

I hope you stay, Holly, but if you do go, best of luck and I hope you do very well!

I bet there is some new harley riders over there. And I would say that the SC administration is using that as a draw. Myrtle Beach has a huge bike week 2 times per year. I think SC is promoting that to Holly.

superk get real. If Holly leaves UT, it will be because she has found a better opportunity for herself. It certainly won't be because of some potentially new harley friends.....she has given her all to the Lady Vols so give her more credit than that.

Holly I really hate to see you go but it may be time for your chance. Love to see you stay at UT but if you are offered the job and take it I hope you best of luck except of course when UT time comes around. I do not think Pat will do anything to hinder your chance but I also think she would love to see you stay at UT. I also think that if you stay at UT and with the Ladies coming in I think that you and Pat will take them a lot farther than most people think, after all it is hard to beat the best head coach and the best assistant in college basketball.

It will be a sad day if Holly ever leaves, however Holly has done so much work behind the scenes for 24 years while Summitt gets the glory. Time for Holly to move on and get the recognition she deserves for her hard work.

I certainly hope that Holly dosen't leave us, but if she does then best of luck to her. She is a wonderful person and an awesome coach. She'll just get some good head coaching experience under her belt so she can come back home to Tennessee when the day comes (NO!!!!) that Pat decides to retire. I would welcome her with open arms as our head coach someday, if that's the way it's meant to play out. GO LADY VOLS!!! 9 in '09!

Sorry,Holly will never leave UT she is too lazy too become a head coach just look the way she carrys herself on the sidelines.
Posted by 98reax on May 1, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Just because she is calm and less animated on the sidelines than some other folks does not mean she is lazy. Some fans never leave their seat. Some never change their expression nor cheer. Does that make them less a fan? Does it mean they are lazy? I'd venture to say if Holly were head coach she would show a different side of Holly, emotionally.

Does Holly have any children that may impact her leaving? Not sure if she has sons, daughters that may be enrolled in the K'ville school system.

No kids, unless she adopted them.

What does her husband do for a living? Would he want to relocate to SC? All those things could play a part as to whether she takes that job.
