The Tennessee men's basketball recruits are ready to "put on for Tennessee,'' as junior college All-American Bobby Maze recently rapped in a YouTube video.
UT Director of Basketball Operations Ken Johnson said he doesn't anticipate any academic complications as the second term of summer classes comes to an end.
"We don't have any issues; all of our guys here are in good academic standing,'' Johnson said. "Bobby (Maze) is also very close, finishing what he has to get done (academically), and he'll be ready to enroll in the fall.''
Maze, a transfer from Hutchinson, (Kan.) Junior College, will compete for the starting job at point guard with incoming freshman Daniel West.
West is one of five incoming freshmen who have worked to satisfy and/or maintain eligibility requirements after starting classes at UT this summer. The other freshmen: shooting guard Scotty Hopson, small forward Renaldo Woolridge, post Philip Jurick and power forward Emmanuel Negedu.
"They've been getting acclimated to their classes and life on campus,'' Johnson said. "When they come back for fall term they'll be ready to go. It won't be a big shock to them.''
Johnson said the freshmen will finish the second term of summer school Thursday and report back on Aug. 16 to prepare for the start of fall term classes (Aug. 20).
"We'll let them get adjusted to classes before we start lifting weights the following Monday, Aug. 25,'' said Johnson.
Johnson said getting a head start on classes is also important because by the time the players are done with their sophomore years, they should have 40 percent of their work done toward completing a four-year degree.
The players' individual workouts with the coaching staff are tentatively slated to begin Sept. 1 at Pratt Pavilion. Last year, the Vols were still conducting fall workouts at Stokely.
Injury Update: Junior small forward J.P. Prince has been cleared to resume training and shouldn't be limited in individual workouts after undergoing shoulder surgery in the spring.
Senior power forward Ryan Childress, who got married last weekend, is off crutches and is working to return from the knee injury he suffered playing pickup basketball in the spring. Childress aims to be ready by the start of team workouts Oct. 17.
New Look: Johnson said the Vols will have a uniform change this season, though it won't be anything too drastic.
"We've taken last year's uniform, and we've kicked it up a little bit,'' Johnson said. "We haven't seen what adidas will do for us with the shoes, but I'm sure it will be nice.''
Johnson said UT will stick with its warm-ups.

I hope we get black uniforms with orange outline around the shoulders and down the side, and the numbers in white. God that would be SWEET like candy.

The uniforms will stink! Adidas employs blind people for designers.

Tennessee orange is one of our best recruiting draws. Why screw it up with black?
Posted by THE_VOL on August 3, 2008 at 9:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Okay, let's stop all the worrying and bickering. You WILL see black uniforms this season. Undetermined yet when or how much but they WILL be used. Frankly I don't give a damn if they wear green/purple/pink - it's about championships not uni's!!

My bet is they show up in Lawrence first.

I disagree, I enjoy Adidas' line of clothes. I do agree, however, about the all black uniforms. Some black would be nice, but not all black. I am a traditionalist so I to want a lot of bright orange! Go Vols.

As long as our black uniforms go over better than Rick Pitino's white suit last year, I'm fine with it.
*****ANY KIND OF ALTERNATE UNIFORM HELPS US A LOT IN RECRUITING AND MARKETING.*****
ESPN is easily fooled by stunts, gags, and tricks. Alternate unis would get us on the first segment of SportsCenter, which is very important in national recruiting.

Doesn't matter what color the uniforms are. Memphis will beat em bad on Jan. 24th.

I'll not inhale until Bobby Maze's academics are up to snuff, and he has successfully matriculated into The University of Tennessee.

Help me understand the math. According to Johnson by the time the players complete their sophomore year (2 years) they will be 40% complete of their 4 year degree. 4 divided by 2 has always been .5 or 50% and they are also taking summer classes.

hmmmm, so we've got opposing fans tuning into our basketball stories in august?
my how times have changed.

jawbreaker: You may not ever inhale again then. He's gonna be really close and it's absolutely not a lock at this point.
jorido: The degree progress percentages are based on a 5 year stay. So 2/5=40%. As for summer school, when you only pass 6 hrs a semester ( as many do ), summer school is the only way to stay eligible.

Let's hope that they all qualify and pass and stay in school. We don't need to lose any more scholarships. We could end up like Miss State with 7 scholarships. And it would be great if they stayed 4 years and graduated!

Congratulations to Bobby - it's official and he's in!
