McGee to decide Monday, has Vols in final four

Cornerback Brandon McGee from Plantation High School in Lauderhill, Fla., will announce his college decision at 10 a.m. on Monday.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound McGee said he will choose between Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida State and Miami. He has visited all but Ole Miss.

McGee, who holds 34 scholarship offers, recently trimmed Ohio State and North Carolina from his list.

McGee said he hasn’t decided which school he will select.

“I think it may go all the way down to even Monday, right before I announce,” he said. “It’s been so hectic.

“I’m kind of confused with the whole process. I’ll just look for guidance from my coaches, family and by praying on it.”

McGee said he would like to visit UT again this weekend to reassure himself before he makes his announcement. That trip, however, seems unlikely because of McGee’s busy schedule.

A drive from Lauderhill to Knoxville would take about 13 hours.

McGee took his first trip to UT in June. He said the visit left a favorable impression.

“The facilities up there were amazing,” he said. “The town itself, Knoxville is a great town. The coaching staff is very down to earth.”

McGee learned more about the staff, including secondary coach Larry Slade, while visiting with some of the defensive backs.

“They were just telling me good things about Coach Slade and different things about the defense,” McGee said. “That was cool to visit with those guys. They have some of the top talent on the team.”

McGee will now focus on his top priorities in choosing a school. He said he has a few factors he will weigh into his decision.

“The stability of the program as far as coaching changes and the chance to play early and step on the field early,” McGee said. “The direction the program is headed as well will definitely be big.”

Whichever school McGee selects will be his final choice.

McGee, who plans to graduate this fall and enroll in January, said he will only take an official visit to the school he chooses.

“I’m not going to play the decommit game and take visits or anything like that,” he said.

I don't want to read anything into his comment that I shouldn't, but it sounds as if he's leaning toward UT.

(McGee said he would like to visit UT again this weekend to reassure himself before he makes his announcement.)

Of course the good news is if he doesn't choose UT he won't be a Gator.

Brandon, this coaching staff isn't going anywhere and the program is going to play for the BCS championship. Come be a part of it!

We are back to being a defensive back U. One year drop off on defense and people was calling for chiefs head, come on. Goodrich, Grant, Fair, Wilson, wade and someone help me. Defensive back has more in the NFL than any other possition. Stats are not my thing but I am sure someone will help. Come to UT that is where you will make a name for your self like so many others have. Oh yeah I know dewayne is in jail but you all know what I am saying.

When the Vols win the SEC this year and pull in a top 5 recruiting class I think a contract extension is a good idea.

This young man is the real deal. QB, RB, Corner, (DT - maybe not). Reminds me of the G-Gun package. I like FS, but Bobby is 80 (WOW!). Houston Nutt Case, well, I think that says it all. He sure could add a "BIG BANG" to the '09 Class. Keep your fingers crossed...

Looks like a good kid.We are starting to get limited on the # of spots we have available in 09.Not sure about him if early playing time is his main focus.Barring early departures, were stocked for a couple of years.
Good luck Brandon, and if orange is in your blood come on board.

Give Urban Meyer a personality transplant. Talk about looking like one has a perpetual persimmon in one's mouth.

mcbrim is full to the rim. with what is a question that has an obvious answer.

Posted by OakyVol09 on August 5, 2008 at 10:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Looks like a good kid, but as mentioned earlier, if he is looking to get on the field early he may not be favoring UT. Unless he is much better than advertised, he most likely will be redshirting and then waiting until his sophmore or possibly junior year before seeing significant playing time. The kid looks really talented, but so do a lot of others UT has competing for spots in the defensive back field for the next few years.

Posted by awhill00 on August 5, 2008 at 10:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Early playing time doesn't mean he has to start. With the awesome secondary we'll have, he will probably get some snaps. Plus, I'd like another 4 star on the list. Bring it, McGee!! GO VOLS!!

Posted by OakyVol09 on August 5, 2008 at 10:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Don't get me wrong, though, hope the kid is wearing orange next year. A great athlete who seems to have brains and good morals, you can never have enough of 'em.

GOod Luck no matter who you chose young man, but would love to see you dressed in orange on saturdays.

I too feel our program is back on track and will be in the mix of NC game next year or two.

Mcbrim- go to your gator site chief as this is a UT forum. OF course someone said this Mcbrim is really John Adams? who knows and who cares.

Florida may be tough this year but NO NATL TITLE.
UT WIll win a Natl title before florida does.

I'm guessing the fact he had North Carolina on his list still means that he is interested in a quality education. That being the case, Florida would be the obvious pick out of his remaining schools. Unless he is leaning towards one of a few majors UT excells in.

Posted by RichRollin on August 5, 2008 at 11:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, sounds like he is leaning towards the Vols.

Posted by FWBVol on August 5, 2008 at 11:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

alfrizzle, this kid doesn't even have Florida in his final cut. He listed Florida State, Miami and Ole Miss along with UT.

Depending on the major Florida is no better or worse than UT academically. I just hope the school he picks will teach him not to end a sentence in a preposition, i.e. ...one of a few majors UT excells (in).

A couple of good ole boys from Murville are visiting Vanderbilt and they are not sure where the stadium is as it is their first trip. One of the Vol fans sees a Vandy student and says, "Heh, can you tell my where the stadium is at?" The Vandy student looks almost offended, raises his nose to the air, and says, "My good man, we at Vanderbilt University never end a sentence in a preposition." The Vol fan waits a second after he finishes and says, "OK.....Can you tell me where the stadium is at you SOB?"

Posted by gnm53108 on August 6, 2008 at 12:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

General...so when did vandy build a stadium?

Posted by alfrizzle097 on August 6, 2008 at 12:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Are you honestly criticizing the word I end a sentence with? Believe it is standard spoken English. You know, because nobody says "one of the few majors in which UT excels. I'm aware that you shouldn't put a sentence like that in a paper, but this is an informal opinion site, so quit using grammar as a way to try to invalidate posters' points that you don't want to hear. I just went through the college selection process. For somebody who is undecided in a major, Florida is the more respected school. You can pick your evidence (criminal forensics, veterinary science, business school) to argue UT is better, but Florida has the better reputation for all around education.

BTW, note that Florida and State are on different lines. As I was skimming the article I missed that. Do you see what I'm driving AT?

Posted by bobbarbilly on August 6, 2008 at 4 a.m. (Suggest removal)

alf, there should be a hyphen between all and around and there are probably more cats in Florida than elsewhere due to all of the available seafood....

Tommyjack: You probably could. Too bad I'm going to UT. :) Chose it because of proximity to the national labs in Oak Ridge. Gives plenty of opportunities in physics. Guess it's a good thing I'm not majoring in language studies.

TJ majored in Budweiser with a minor in Killians.

Wrote his thesis on "Why best thoughts come at 3:14 AM while imbibing".

Short paper was on ranking pretzels.

I'se talk prefect english! In school, dey give me lots a A's! I cut em all out and pasted em' to my dresser. Everyday, I called it the A-dresser!

So, like I was saying. Scout has him as a 4*, #10 prospect at DB. They also report that he is down to three schools... we didn't make it. OK, just kidding, he has apparently dropped Miami. It's TN, Miss, and Florida "transfer over my dead body" State.

There will be plenty of room for this kid. This might very well be Berry's last season as a collegiate athlete. Plus, we will lose Morley. There will likely be some position switching next year and, if this kid is any good, he could easily find himself in the rotation next season. Especially if he goes through spring practice with the team.

Let's see . . . did I spell everything correctly and use proper grammar and punctuation? Phew!!

Hotlanta, Berry is only a Soph. He can't leave until after 09.

Word on the street down here in Fla "he's a VOL"

Posted by sjt18 on August 6, 2008 at 10:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks mikevol. That seems consistent with his comments but he could be wanting to take that trip to avoid any regrets about "not" committing to UT.

I like UT's chances but the instate draw is pretty strong too. Interesting that he shunned the Gators when they're in need of CB's....

Posted by thesavageorange on August 6, 2008 at 1:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

At one point I said UT, but this is getting a little tricky.I really think we are his favorite, but he is getting alot of pressure from family and friends to stay home.Hopefully the lure of being part of "The Goon Squad" is enough.

I think what McGee does has some bearing on what Gordon decides to do.

Posted by thesavageorange on August 6, 2008 at 1:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't like the fact that Miami is back in it.He had previously eliminated UM & just recently put them back in it.Both UM & FSU guys in the know of their programs have been saying UM even when he supposedly eliminated them.

I still like our chances, but it's going to be close.

Posted by gator4life on August 6, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Scott, The Gators are not really at "need" in CBs. Maybe safeties, but the CB numbers are not lacking. Not sure why UF isn't after this kid, but no school is going sign all the talent Florida produces every year :-)

Stable Program:
No championship in 10 years;
Players get away with almost everything;
No need to worry about academics;
No need to worry about press and fans coming after you if you play bad...the coach is always "proud of our boys"
Conservative game play...no need to improve your football IQ...we still use the same system of 15 years ago and everyone has surpassed us.

Either way I hope we land him and that Foolmer's ineptude won't cost us chances at titles because of wasted talent like this guy.

Stable Program:
Whining Fans
Moaning Fans
B!t(h!ng Fans

Either way, I hope we land him and that LazhilUT's constant whining won't cost us chances at landing top recruits.

True about signing all that FL talent gator4life. I think there's like 50 4/5* players this year in FL... and that doesn't count the 3* players the scouting svcs are wrong about.

alfrizzle097... You forgot ignorant fans in your list. The lazhil doesn't know what he's talking about.

Coaches who failed to get their teams to the SEC championship game last year: Tuberville, Richt, Meyer, Saban and Spurrier.

Maybe your team will make it THIS year, Laz.

Rivals has posted McGee only has three choices. And Oku has dropped another team and we are in his final four. From what I have heard Lacy is having some academic issues so SAVAGE what do you think our best option is as far as OKU and LACY? I feel pretty comfortable with Oku coming in and getting PT because he is explosive, and Lacy is kind of up in the air? What do you think?

Posted by thesavageorange on August 6, 2008 at 7:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

TNfaninMS ,Oku.I like both, but the academics are the concern.Plus Lacy is going to wait and see if LSU offers. If they do I think he gives them the nod.If we get neither we will still be in good shape over the next 2-3 yr's.

Savage,
How do you see the rest of the signing class panning out? Do you think we can have a solid top 5 or 10 this year? Things are looking good from a working standpoint on this years class. Looking up for the boys in orange.

He will go to MIami or FSU. Probably Miami.
