Friday's practice all about getting ready for Saturday's scrimmage

Tennessee's football team has a scrimmage on the brain.

The Vols' two-hour workout Friday morning inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center was all about getting ready for Saturday afternoon's first major scrimmage of fall camp.

"We're just fundamentally trying to take steps and build depth and look at some scheme stuff," UT coach Phillip Fulmer said.

DCFlorida - I should have said, don't act like you know anything about coaching football because we know you know nothing.

DC, We got better as the season progressed last year. You and your team got worse. It's really that simple. The gators will be fortunate to win 8 games again this year. Tepetercutterbow will be fortunate to make it through half of the SEC schedule before limping home.

Just noticed that collegefootballnews.com has their SEC predictions out. Believe it or not, they are picking UT over Florida. I'll say this....if we beat Florida and start 3-0, feel free to book your hotel room in Atlanta.

funny how so many fans from other schools spout off on here....I honestly have never subscribed to another schools board.....just curious....how many of you other Vol fans hang out on other boards.....or is it just that theirs are so boring, they come here? Anyway, 23 more days and we will know if all the hype is just that....hype. My gut says it isn't, but only time will tell. I'm definately more excited about this team than I have been the past few years. GO VOLS!!!

DC doesn't get that this is the way the SEC EAST Champions prepare for the season. Perhaps if we came in third in our own division, and lost to a Big Ten team in our bowl game, things might need to be looked at. Gen H2O was right,

TennVol,
I, unlike our pleasant gator fans here, refrain from posting on other college sites. It's kind of like going to a party your not invited to.

I guess they think they're actually doing some spying on UT football. I don't mind them reading, just keep their banter to themselves.

Let's not get burned out on these croc fans.
There will be plenty of talking to be done the week of Sep 20th. Am I right?

DC,
Nothing is wrong with a coach sounding like the wheels are coming off. The Bear and Vince Dooley made you think that they couldn't beat Gainesville High. And then would clean your clock. Much like they did against the Gators for decades.

What the h e double hockey sticks are you all talking about. right now every team in the country is working on fundamentals. what else do you guys think goes on in practice? nobody ever answers me on here and thats cool but please tell me what else he would be doing besides checking for effort levels and teaching fundamentals. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!!

Posted by volroadwarrior on August 8, 2008 at 3:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You can't evaluate much of what a coach says about practice. He could be serving Kool Aid or sandbagging. There is no way to tell. We do know UT is installing a new O, so what is wrong with players learning it? Coach says they are working on fundamentals and building depth as well as teaching the new offense. So what else is different than at any other campus? Much ado about nothing!!

Posted by SemperVol on August 8, 2008 at 3:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Homer,

The scrimmage is open to public. The practices are not. I got run off by Trooper Taylor while I was a student there watching a practice.

Posted by Moaninglikeheck on August 8, 2008 at 3:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't understand how someone can get "incompetence" out of three very short paragraphs about practicing before a scrimmage that really don't say much at all.

"The Vols' two-hour workout Friday morning inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center was all about getting ready for Saturday afternoon's first major scrimmage of fall camp."

How does that scream incompetence? They will be scrimmaging on Saturday afternoon. Friday they were working out in preperation for that scrimmage. A always comes before B and B always comes before C.

The Saturday scrimmage will likely be the beginnings of preperation for the UCLA opener I would imagine. Preseason scrimmaging just started, I wouldn't read much into anything.

What do you think a "scrimmage" is? Isn't that where offenses and defenses square off in a "scrimmage" with each other??

DC, while UF is warming up to UT with lower D1 schools, we actually try to start our season with a tough non-conference opponent. Maybe UF is more fresh when they play UT since they didn't really have to play hard the 1st two games. Don't worry about our practices, just stay focused on Tebow 'n Friends. We'll see you on Sept. 20. GO VOLS!!

DCFlorida,

regarding this:

I refrained from commenting on the last article that talked about the offense still "installing this and implementing that." Now we read this article where UT is "practicing to get ready for a scrimmage."

Surely UT is farther along than they appear to be.

There will be a story running on GVX tomorrow referencing the top 4 or 5 things UT will need to take out of tomorrow's scrimmage. Edwards article will speak to Crompton's play at QB, the D Line, and some areas that have not been talked about much such as Cunningham and the the kicking game, special teams and the return game.

Contrary to what you might feel, UT is progressing. After all, they must be doing something right if you are hanging out on an enemy sight as much as you do.

From an article on ESPN...

"Bosley, the Auburn center, pointed out that unlike the receivers and the backs, who are more likely to shuttle on and off the field, the offensive line is out there for every quick snap. He played last season at 291 pounds. He began August workouts this week at 278. He said he feels quicker and stronger."

3.) drink gator-aid
4.) Circumsize each other while posing for the photographers
5.) Drink some more gator-aid
6.) Kiss each other on the cheek and pose again
7.) Drink Gator aid
8.) Troll other websites for information
9.) kiss each other some more
10.)Wish Spurrier had returned to Gainesville

I'm surprised you haven't been kissed yet...then again you probably have....

DCflorida,

Regarding this:

If you get more out of your preseason, you might actually be ready to play by week 3. Recent history has shown, that is not always the case.

Or, you can just dismiss it. I hope you guys keep up the loosey-goosey, shuckin' and jivin', good time rock&roll practices.

I think what Volchaz is saying is that you really don't know what you are talking about when you comment on Vols football and their practices. No more than any of us know about Meyers practices and how your team is progressing.

You appear to believe the Vols are "loosey-goosey-shuckin and jivin" through practices, but you have no knowledge of what is occurring.

My thoughts are that you are commenting on what you are hearing based on what you apparently "know" florida is doing. Well, the "loosey-goosey" Vols with their "rock n roll" practices were playing in the SEC Championship game last year while the gators were at home ordering Petro's (see if you can figure out what a Petro is DC, since you know so much about Knoxville sports).

If loosey goosey gets us in the SECCG and your gators "serious" practices get them what they got...I'll take rock n roll all the way to Atlanta.

Mcbrim,
Wow, I got you to change your valediction. Nice Kerry slam. I enjoyed that. We have something in common.

"Fan base" is kind of a hazy concept. Who really knows who has the largest fan base? No one. But don't dispute this. Our fans our great. Our fans are hospitable. Our fans are true.

We may not have the same lunacy and crudeness as you reptile fans but we love our team, we donated more money for recruiting than any other team last season. Our athletic program is 100% self sufficient (no state grants or public money). We have tremendous facilities (Neyland Stadium is getting a long overdue facelift - so back off). We all have our ignorant fans, k. They are the exceptions that prove the point

Oh and we also enjoy watching Florida's men's basketball team get annually beaten down by Tennessee. We enjoy our Lady Vol championships. concerts, beautiful mountain panoramas are not far away. Knoxville is a fun town that loves it's people. Please refrain from slamming our fan base, my alma mater, and my home. I don't appreciate that.

Now, I know you will pick something from above to dispute, and that's fine. Isn't it funny that this article has gotten as many posts as it has considering there are 3 paragrphs?

Semper Fi my good man. Thank you for service.

For the last few years I have been down on Fulmer as much as the next guy. However consider these facts: Last year we came within 7 points of the SEC championship with a defense that could not stop anyone, an offense that featured a QB injured almost the whole season and a coaching staff reeling from accusations of ineptitude all season. This year we start with a revamped coaching staff featuring the 4th rated tenured NCAA Div 1A coach, a highly touted and revamped coaching staff, the best OL , DB, and RB's in the conference, and possibly a greatly improved DL. Not to mention a blue chip QB and great backups and experienced receivers. This is the best chance we have had in years to go back to the BCS if not more. Let's get behind these guys and stop the BS.

DC-

You're making yourself look ignorant. We are running plays on offense and defense. We ran 58 plays on the 1st day in pads. We've got a new OC with, by all accounts, a very multiple and complicated system. It is not surprising that they may still be running some of the plays for the 1st time on the 3rd day of practice in full pads.

Yeah Foster is so great...he averages less than 5 yards a carry. Hmmm...guys like Lewis, Henry , Cobb, Garner, Stewart and Stephens were all over 5.5 yards per carry for their career.

LSU's embarassment of riches at RB - Keiland WIlliams, Charles Scott and Richard Murphy all averaged 6.6 yards per carry or better last season. But hey our OL and RB are the best in the conference. Hardesty meanwhile was at a whopping 3.6 yards per carry.

TENNESSEE FANS......JUST SAW THIS ON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS SITE.....(SORRY FOR THE LENGTH)..BUT IF THIS DOESNT FIRE YOU UP...NOTHING WILL

Everybody has memories of their favorite Tennessee Football game. Having witnessed 40 some odd years of the Big Orange playing on crisp fall Saturdays, while my dad has about 65 plus seasons of Tennessee Football within him. I won’t embarrass him by saying how many plus years there are within that.

Some games we agree on, and some we don’t as he remembers things that he saw that were important to him and his memories. The following Top 10 UT games mark what I’ve seen that helps define Tennessee Football.

1. The 1998 National Championship Game in which Tennessee defeated one of the nations top football programs in Florida State. It is was truly a Fiesta for everyone wearing Orange and White nation-wide that night. The Vols 23-17 win marked one of the best runs in college football by dominating the mid to late ‘90’s with relative ease.

2. 1998 Arkansas – the Clint Stoerner fumble between two 8-0 teams headed on a collision course all season long. After UT recovered the fumble, the off -- on drizzling rains began coming down, with it brought one of the loudest vocal renditions of Rocky Top ever sung by a 100K plus football crowd. Travis Henry punched the football into the end zone to put the Volunteers up 28-24 after trailing by 3. Without the hard charging legs and the determination of Henry, the recovered fumble would be just a recovered fumble.

3. The 1986 Sugar Bowl win over Heisman Trophy winner Vinnie Testaverde and the Miami Hurricanes was so much sweeter than any sugar being served up in New Orleans. The underdog Vols dominating 35-7 victory affirmed Tennessee was still a national football power.

4. 1995 Tennessee over Alabama that began the longest win streak over the Crimson Tide by one program that lasted for eight consecutive years. Peyton Manning’s arm and Joey Kent’s pass catching and yards after the catch, that let everyone watching the game that greatness was coming - and soon.

5. 1969 saw Tennessee manhandling the Crimson Tide for the third straight time in Birmingham. Was this same 41-14 score and the 1995 score of the same an omen? As many a Statistician has pondered game scoring before; what were the odds of this exact same score happening between two teams that many years apart? It’s way smaller than previously imagined obviously within it's probabilities. As UT won the SEC Crown in ’69, it was only topping on a fantastic season.

first night game, the 1997 win over UCLA – a game played in soaring heat that should have been played at night, the 1999 drumming of Notre Dame 38-14, 2000 win over Arkansas 6

Posted by volguy41nlouisiana on August 8, 2008 at 5:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

6. 2001 Florida, the end of Johnson City native Steve Spurrier’s career in Florida as a former player and then the coach. The game will always be remembered as “the little engine that did,” with UT running back Travis Stephens gutsy on field performance in the 34 –32 win. The 226-yard rushing show by Stephens gave his Coach, Phillip Fulmer his first ever win in sticky-humid Gainesville.

7. The 1971 win over Joe Pa and Penn State by the youngest head coach in the NCAA with UT’s Bill Battle. ABC Sports tabbed it the game of the week, would broadcast Tennessee’s 31-11 victory over the then 5th ranked Nittany Lions nationally. A crane was brought into Neyland Stadium to hoist the ABC Logo Sign into the air over the crowds, more than a hundred feet in the sky.

8. 1991 Notre Dame saw UT fans turning off the TV and heading outdoors early as the Big Orange fell behind the “Catholic School Girls” in a rendition of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Joan Crawford Has Rise From The Grave.” Trailing the Irish 31 to 7 at the half, left little hope for UT. When things could get no more dismal, the Volunteers came back in what is regarded as the greatest comeback in UT history. RB Aaron Hayden’s catch and run into the end zone gets longer and longer each season. Hayden ran out of the stadium to field the ball, then ran 4 blocks, stopped to eat an Orange-Dreamsicle at the local five and ten, before reentering the stadium to run past Touchdown Jesus for the game winning score in Tennessee’s 35-34 win over Notre Dame.

9. One of the top fifteen games ever played on Shields-Watkins Field was the 1998 game with Florida that got UT’s national title run in gear as Place-kicker Jeff Hall booted a field goal in overtime to put UT ahead. Florida missed on its OT 3-pointer and Tennessee beat the Gators after a five-year drought 20-17.

10. 2002, the dismantling of Michigan 45-17 in the Citrus Bowl. Just as a former ex-Florida coach Steve Spurrier had joked, “you can’t spell Citrus without UT” was exactly correct. Tennessee dismantled the Wolverines in quick fashion under a sunny Orlando sky, as Spurrier’s own alma mater has never been able to beat Michigan.

11. * For Good Measure – The 1990 Cotton Bowl win over Arkansas,

There are many other games like the 1990 Disney Pigskin Classic tie with Colorado, a 1972 win over Penn State that marked two straight and was the first night game, the 1997 win over UCLA – a game played in soaring heat that should have been played at night, the 1999 drumming of Notre Dame 38-14, 2000 win over Arkansas 6

DC-

You obviously just don't get it. No one is hovering over the damn practice field so they can give us the play-by-play.

Exactly what kind of coverage are you looking for from the UT practices? What kind of news do you read about the UF practices? Maybe you can point our buddy Drew in the right direction so that he can properly cover fall practice.

Yeah, they do the Tennessee drill on the 1st day of pads, and that's not running plays... but it is carrying on a tradition. Then, they run plays while the coaches critique the players on those plays.

Just keep telling yourself that UT is practicing like sh_t and that we won't be any good. Heck, go back and let Herban and his band of merry thugs know that we are d_cking off at practice so they probably shouldn't worry too much about that game on Spet 20th. It'll be a cake walk... until y'all show up and get hit in the mouth.

Fulmer's a genius! Haven't you heard. Football coaches are VERY SMART people and most all have IQ's in the 180's. Some of the smartest men I have ever known in my life were football coaches. Just think back to the braintrust you aspired to be like at your junior high or high school. Brilliant!

Gents, the bottom line is we are a major program across the ages and florida isn't. This is like arguing with a guy because you have the prettier date and you both know it. Plus the Spurrier alter is closed during the day in Gainesville.

Attention true Vol fans:

I can't believe there are over 100 post on this article and most are banter with gaytor idiots. My God..just ignore the morons that have nothing better to do. Keep the conversation between us and they will eventually get tired and leave.

dc better get your pouncey boy some more beer
looks like he is spending his time drinking and not not doing much practice

These UF fans remind me of congress asking the pentagon to reveal details of covert operations. Uhhhh... they're COVERT and revealing them would be ludicrous. Of course our new O is not as important as something like that, but you get my point. Every advantage should be used and I personally don't want anything printed about specific plays or sets. Is that what these jackazzes are wanting to hear about? If so, are you kidding me?

iam4ua, ending a sentence with "stuff" is better than ending it with "guilty, your honor."

Enjoy saban while you can. He'll be gone for cheating or mo' money in less than four years. Saban = coaching ho.

Posted by Navalorange on August 8, 2008 at 7:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

nafslov, in other words, how much info about practice do the gayturds think needs to be revealed. How do you not get my post. I know it's not like the old days when they guarded the gates, but we do need to take advantage of having a new offense and when certain sets are introduced and practiced the coaches might want to keep them "on the downlow". Basically, do the UF guys want a play by play because that would be crazayzee, get it now.

DC, If Fulmer were your coach you would have been in Atl last Dec. 1.

Remember......" I mean man we're talkin' bout practice man...c'mon man we're talkin' bout practice man...."Repeat practice about another 30+ times like Sir Iverson did. Man we are talkin' bout practice right..

DC,

Do you realize that you comment on our site more than about 90% of UT fans?! I am a UT alum who is ridiculously fiery about our athletic program (who will be at the rose bowl september 1) and have been a member of this site since November and have fewer comments than you...and you have been a member since the end of May...How do you have this much time on your hands? Why do you care to comment on our site 250 times a month? You aren't adding that much more to the conversation so stop clogging up our site with your trolling crap.

There's a difference between adding a different perspective and wearing out your welcome. You and your insight-less friend McBrim fall into the latter.

Get a hobby

mcbrim,
after a long hiatus, I reply to something you said that I actually agree with and what you state is 100% correct..."Sgt. USMC 70-72 (when John Kerry FIRST turned against American troops)"

I sincerely thank you for your service and for the comment.

And....uh....I've been to Gainesville several times in the off season, too....it's a hot, muggy bump in the road between Atlanta & Orlando/Tampa with zero to do.

OK DC Florida needs an in-depth practice report.

"Today, Vol fans, the squad donned their uniforms and pads for a pre-scrimmage practice. The theme of todays practice was running all the secret formations and schemes from the 'clawfense' system of new OC Dave Clawson. Here is a run down of one featured play....

First play from scrimmage the Vol football team showcased the top secret Cromp-chomp play, which will be used during the first drive of the UT-UF game. Jon Crompton the QB will be the man to watch for this formation. When he goes under center, notice the audible, which will be 'Blue-77 Blue-77' with a five count snap. He will look to the left towards wideout Gerald Jones and nod his head. When you see this series of events, you can be sure that Cromp will be faking a lateral pass to Jones, who'll fake the defense as if he's going to pass the ball, and Crompton will tuck the ball and run.

Check in later for the next scrimmage report on the Spider-Monkey play that will be used on third down in the UCLA game in the second half"

How's that DC, learn anything?

OK Volunteer fans...this stuff with DCfloridiot, McFly and iam4cheatingua is getting out of hand. I have an idea, if we ignore them, maybe they'll all go away.

All they want to do is egg us on with their unfounded comments such as McFly's 4:15 remark that there is nothing to do in Knoxville other than going to a football game. If you like insects and reptiles there's plenty to do in Gainesville. If you enjoy a nice city with great culture that is less than one hour from the most visited national park in the country in the middle of the mountains, Knoxville is the place.

Come on Vol fans lets make this a no response zone to fans from other schools. We can do it.

UT vs. Gayturds series record is 19-18
UT at home vs. Gayturds: 11-8
UT at the slough sewer vs. Gayturds: 5-9
UT vs. Gayturds at a netural site: 3-1
UT vs. Gayturds last five years: 2-3

Both schools have hung 35+ points on the other only 4 times each. Don't act like last years score was anything other than the typical once every Blue Moon thing. How about crushing them 45-3 in '90 versus last years 59-20? Both of those games are just as applicable to this seasons game.

naslov,
In all kindness, stick it in your ear.
The military is about winners.
Far left wingers, evidently like yourself, are the whiners.
Don't you find it funny how the military helicopters that fly over Neyland are respected & cheered? There is a connection between the service and the Vols. Never seen a standing ovation for a hybrid flying over Neyland. Oh, and before you get too livid and slap me with your ACLU bag, remember the stadium is named after GENERAL Robert Neyland.

Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State", a nickname earned during the War of 1812 because of the prominent role played by volunteer soldiers from Tennessee, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.

Unlike poser "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt who was never in the Navy much less served a day in the military, we are "Volunteers" BECAUSE of military service.

BTW, Vanderbilt married his cousin and never set a foot in Tennessee his entire life!

"My favorite Vol game was Tee Martin and the Vols TEAM beating FSU in the Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship , in contrast my least favorite game was the Orange Bowl of 1997 against Nebraska where Mr Hype ( media one-man-team) manning lost the game for us !Go Vols!"

Oh; I get it. That same mr.hype Tee that lost to Fl,Ark,and that same NEBRASKA team one year later. He should be given the "life in front of the firing squad ", for making that; ONE OF YOUR LEAST FAVORITE GAMES IN YOUR TENNESSEE FOOTBALL HISTORY !!

Am looking forward to hearing something about how our young fullbacks are doing.

And we got lotsa returning dbs that have played; am curious to hear if/how the younger ones will contribute (Anderson, Fleming, Evans).

We know 1 scrimmage won't answer everything; its still 3 wks until game weekend!
