The officials certainly played a part in Saturday night's scrimmage by Tennessee. The Vols were called for at least nine penalties, including three false starts, holding, offsides, roughing the punter, and three pass interference penalties.
Sophomore Dennis Rogan was called for pass interference on Josh Briscoe when the senior slipped past him on a slant pattern toward the goal line.
Senior Antonio Gaines was also called for interference on a deep route into the end zone.
Defensive backs coach Larry Slade didn't completely agree with the penalties, but added that UT's scheme lends itself to close calls.
"That happens," Slade said. "That's part of it. When you play aggressive man-to-man, you're going to get some of those calls."
Rogan echoed Slade's sentiments.
"I kind of felt him give me a shove," Rogan said of Briscoe. "I was stumbling. The ref said I grabbed his jersey so I guess that's where it came from. I was more in position."
Slade said he was more concerned with some missed tackling.
The Vols played several different lineups on the second team secondary as they look for their best six or seven players, Slade said.
Freshman Prentiss Waggner started with the second team on safety. Waggner intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and had four tackles, one for a loss.
"He's a special guy," junior safety Demetrice Morley said. "He's making good strides. We've been taking him under our wing."
For Kicks: Punter Chad Cunningham averaged 42.4 yards on nine punts with a long of 58 yards. The sophomore will play a key role with senior punter Britton Colquitt suspended for the first five games of the season.
"I felt pretty comfortable," Cunningham said. "I didn't have the best night I could have."
Cunningham said he still wants to get his punts off faster and be more consistent. However, he was happy with his performance as he kicked out of the back of the end zone during a specialized drill.
Coach Phillip Fulmer saw good and bad in Cunningham's performance.
"I was pleased at times and at times I'd like it to be a little better," Fulmer said. "He's had a good week.
"He's getting there and we've got another week to get him there."
Three DTs: Senior Walter Fisher started the scrimmage with the first team along with projected senior starter Demonte Bolden at defensive tackle.
Junior Dan Williams came in with the second-team defense. Williams said the depth chart adjustment was of no concern.
"Me, Demonte and Walter, we're all in the same boat so it doesn't really matter," Williams said.
On his first play in the scrimmage, Williams responded by nearly tackling a UT tailback for a safety.
"When you're on the field," Williams said, "you've got to go hard."
Gerald's Game: Sophomore Gerald Williams registered seven tackles, one for a seven-yard loss and a sack. Williams played middle linebacker after playing weakside linebacker in last week's scrimmage.
Williams said he's more comfortable at middle, where he played in high school and junior college.
"Ever since I moved back to middle linebacker this week, I've been pretty smooth," Williams said.
UT's projected starter at middle linebacker is senior Ellix Wilson. Sophomore Nick Reveiz is also competing for playing time.
Fisticuffs: Linebacker Rico McCoy, who is 221 pounds, knocked offensive lineman Vladimir Richard, who weighs 300, to the ground well after a play. Both players were removed temporarily to cool off. Fulmer said the dispute began during warm-ups.
"I love spirit; I love competitiveness, but I don't like silliness," Fulmer said. "He (McCoy) would have been thrown out of a game and so would have Vlad."
Wild Berry Package: Defensive back Eric Berry ran one play as a quarterback. Berry, who evidently wasn't allowed any contact while on offense, was called down for a loss during a sweep as defenders closed in.

Workin, you're more predictable than anything Fulmer could ever say.
I realize you spout off just to get under people's skin and get attention. It's kind of sad and says a lot about your personal life off the message boards.

I don't like the "wild berry" name for Eric's QB package, but whatever.
We've got 5 weeks before Florida (our first real test).... we basically have 2 preseason games with UCLA and UAB.
I predict a 17 pt win over UCLA and a 35 pt win over UAB. I just want to beat Florida, UGA, and Bama.

This worries me. The defense has been tackling poorly for a few years now. The defense must quit arm-tackling.

looks like the O couldn't get out of their own way and Chavis managed to stop almost everything against second stringers.....9 punts for Pete's sake.

Gerald Williams sounds like the real deal at ml. Now that we have someone who will hit hard, lets move him to tight end. The best d tackle we have not starting. Sounds like the coaches wheels are really turning now.

Still moving LBs around 2 weeks afore the tilt.
Not sure about that. Don't count UCLA a gimmee! Let them show us.
We can all hope.....

29nth total, 29nth scoring. No one is mentioning their defense but Walker is a good DC and probably a head coach in the near future.

Three false starts and a holding is not very good for an experienced offensive line like ours. All of those lend themselves to 3 and outs a huge percentage of the time. Let's make the other team stop us instead.

New offense probably means a lot of stupid 5 yard penalties. Didn't always agree with Cutcliff's schemes but but our O line rarely jumped before the snap.

listen on this site we are fans and other teams fans. we can look ahead to any game we want to. we can look to next years fla-tenn game. we are not players and coaches so stop with all this don't look over these guys and these guys and ur stupid if u look over ucla. we are fans.go vols!!!

I thought the scrimmage was to be be stopped when players hit to hard. Coach Spurrier would have taken his ball and gone home.

Maybe they'll spend 15 minutes to work on tackling this week and all of our problems will solved! Hey Foolmore ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!

ikid 9:25 - true, many don't want to hear about defensive woes, but we may not have the advantage of gnat's poots and 18 yard fumblerooski gains this season. UCLA ranked way above us last year in D and from what I've read, their LBs are about the best in the Pac-10.
And very active.
I'm sticking to 7-5, until I'm shown different.
They may have green QBs, but you have to have a pass rush to rattle them.
We'll soon see.
orangebloodgmc writes:
I'm sticking to we only have zero wins until we play our first game and continue take them one at a time.

richvol (9:40 a.m.) - could it be that some of those penalties were on 2nd team lineups? I haven't read anything to know for sure, but that is a possibility.
Orangeblood13 (11:49 a.m.) - put him on your "Do Not Read" list. I did weeks ago. Got better things to do with my time...

UCLA game will be decided by mistakes, fumbles, and the mental aspect of which team wants it. Vols have history of getting off to bad starts when they play on west coast. They have been doomed like last year when they allow their west coast opponent to put the game out of reach shortly after opening kickoff. We have to get off to a good start..be smart and ready to play ball.
orangebloodgmc writes:
bigfan, we must not have seen the same Cal game last year because in my recollection they did not put it out of reach just minutes from the opening kickoff. I recall them scoring to take a lead 3 times and us fighting back and answering to tie it up ... THREE TIMES. Is that not correct?
BigOrangeVol writes:
Just for the record:
We’re 2-3 on the West Coast versus UCLA.
We are 7-4-2 all-time against them.
The average score in the series has been UT-26 / UCLA-21.
The average score in LA/Pasadena is UT-24 / UCLA-22.
Dickey was 2-1, Battle was 1-1-1, Majors was 2-1-1, Phillip is 2-1 versus the Bruins.
We have won the last two in a row by an average of 10.5 points.
The betting lines have UT as a solid 7 point favorite.
Other interesting lines:
UAB is a 14-14 ½ point dog to Tulsa.
Gators are giving up 34-34 ½ versus Hawaii.
Cow College is favored by 26 ½ against La-Monroe.
N. Ill. Is an 8 ½ point dog to Minnesota.
Bama is a 5 point dog versus Clemson.
Miss. St is giving up 8 ½ against La Tech.
Spurrier is an 11 ½ -12 point dog to NC State.
Wyoming is favored by 10 versus Ohio U.
Vandy is a 3-3 ½ point against Miami of Ohio.
UK is a 4-4 ½ dog versus Louisville.
Tiger High is an 8-8 ½ point dog to Ole Miss.
That’s four of the nine SEC schools that are NOT favored to win their opening games against non-conference opponents. NOT GOOD!
GoVol writes:
I'd take Spurrier and the 11 or 12 pts against NC State any day. SC has 10 of 11 returning starters on defense.
orangebloodgmc writes:
Go NC State!
