Hopson tweaks ankle; Pearl says freshman should be 'OK'

Tennessee freshman Scotty Hopson is not expected to miss any practice time after suffering an ankle injury at an all-star function in Dallas last week.

Hopson, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard, “tweaked” his ankle at the adidas Nations event last week, according to UT coach Bruce Pearl.

“Scotty is OK; it's nothing serious,'' Pearl said. “He's not going to miss anything.''

The Vols will begin individual workouts on Monday.

The McDonald's All-American also appeared in a YouTube video conducted in Dallas by an interviewer who identified himself as being from “Draft Express.''

UCLA players Darren Collision and Jrue Holiday, who were also participating in the event, took part in the 7 ½-minute interview alongside Hopson.

Hopson was asked about his feelings about the upcoming season and to shed some light on the Vols.

“I think I fit in pretty well,'' he said in the video. “It's a run and gun system; we're going to get up and down the floor and play good defense. It's going to be a good year for us.''

Hopson was also asked about the pressure of playing on national television with the Vols this season.

“There's no pressure,'' he said. “I just want to come out and play basketball and get wins.''

Hope Hopson stays healthy. We'll need him for a deep run into March. Hope he sticks around for at least 3 years.....

How does one "tweak" an ankle? I understand the terms rolled, strained, sprained, and broken but not tweak. Is it derived from "too-weak" to walk or dunk or what? As pd would say, someone will know.

Volchaz: Good one! 3 years! Now that's funny.

yeah...one and done on this kid. too bad though. Would like to see him for four!!!

I don't know about one and done. I think 2 years and he can be a lottery pick.

rub some dirt on it and put him in. I'm not worried about one, two or three and done. Let's just get through this year and win it all.

When you tweak your ankle it's not as severe as rolling your ankle. Think of it as the first step on a chart of assessing how bad it hurts. You've turned or landed on your foot it in a way that causes a little pain and discomfort to walk or put pressure on it but after a while it's fine. Usually able to shake it off after a while. Nothing serious but they will just take extra precautions just to make sure it wasn't worse. This is just my logical reason behind the term. I think it's a fairly common way of explaining the situation if you're not sure how to classify it before an expert examines it.

You nutcases predicting this kid is "one and done" don't know what you're talking about. He hasn't played one minute of college basketball.

He may the biggest bust we've ever had. He made get hurt. He may have grade issues. He may wither under the competition. He may smoke pot and get kicked out of school and end up washing cars in Louisville.

OR he may steal televisions from dorms like Bernard King and nonetheless go on to a great NBA career.

Before you anoint him as the next Derrick Rose and send him off to the NBA, why not watch him play a few college basketball games first?

Hopson has proved NOTHING to me yet. Yes, he's heralded and, yes, expectations about his potential contributions are sky high. So what?

Why don't you bozos just call him up and tell him he made a mistake by not going pro immediately and choosing college instead?

jasonn1970 writes:

Actually due to what is in my opinion an unconstitutional rule by the NBA players can't go pro without playing a year in college first. Remember about 10 years ago everybody thought Tony Harris might be one and done? You never can tell for sure. But my guess is one and done or two and lottery pick as mentioned above. I think Hopson is the real deal.

I'm with you DenMarkVol. There is no question that this kid can play ball. As far as the rep on this guy, he is a good kid. I wouldn't expect him to pull a "Major Harris" or a "Duke Crews" while at UT. However, let's don't declare him the second coming yet.

I've seen this kid play and am close to the situation, he has no substance abuse or academic problems, however his lack of strength could result in a 2-3 year stint in Knoxville.
