Three Tennessee receivers made plays against the odds in Thursday’s scrimmage.
Redshirt freshman Ahmad Paige was rocked by safety Demetrice Morley but held onto the ball for a first down.
“Him hanging onto that ball probably gives him a world of confidence and gives us a world of confidence,” wide receivers coach Latrell Scott said of Paige. “It just shows how far he’s come in the last seven days of practice.”
Junior Quintin Hancock had an early dropped pass, then led UT’s receivers with five receptions for 59 yards. He also scored a touchdown late in the scrimmage.
“That is Quintin Hancock,” Scott said. “He doesn’t let things rattle him.”
Said Hancock, “You’ve got to come back strong in the end.”
The touchdown came against star safety Eric Berry. Scott said the plan was to let Hancock utilize his strong frame to make a play against a safety.
“He’s going to have to make plays in the red zone like that to help us win games,” Scott said.
After waiting to touch the ball for almost the entire scrimmage, senior Lucas Taylor caught a screen pass and exploded past several defenders for a touchdown during a red zone drill.
“We had been trying to get the ball to Lucas and for some reason the ball just didn’t go to him,” Scott said, “so we just kind of forced it to him.”

I really hope Hancock can translate this into gameday situations. I like his size. Think he can be a good one for us.

TD against Berry? Screen pass for a TD? Our defense is a sieve! The sky is falling!
Just wanted to see how that felt.

The only real test for us to judge this team will come when the season begins.
There is a no win situation in these scrimmages. Your offense is good and the defense bad or defense good offense bad. You'll never be happy if you look for the bad and always be giddy if you look at the good.
Coaches are not going to reveal what they truely feel and by this stage of the fall camp the boys are getting tired of just practice and want to really hit somebody in a game that means something.
The UCLA game will give us a taste but just a sample of what to expect. The UF game will show the true mental, and metel of this years squad.
I'll be looking for a introduction statement at the Rose Bowl but the full Statement against UF.

Good observation on Moore OrangeBloodGMC, I predicted a few weeks back that Moore would be one of the unsung guys who makes an impact this year. Hasn't happened in the scrimmages, but then again, didn't really hear much out of Lucas Taylor either.

Have you guys seen today's collegefootballnews.com ranking of all head football coaches 1-119? Here is the link.
http://cfn.scout.com/2/781942.html
Before you look, Fulmer is 33rd, 7th in the SEC. Somewhat ridiculous, somewhat a true reflection of the national perception of the UT program.
There are several "haven't done nothing" coaches ahead of Fulmer like Jeff Tedford and Rick Neuheisal.

I'm so sick of the disrespect for Fulmer. But it is n wonder, our own fans can't even get behind the man. Prior to 2005, only THREE years ago, Fulmer was near sainthood in Tennessee. Sure, even at that point it had been a while since a chamnpionship run, but 2001 was a heck of a season and just short of a Rose Bowl appearance, and not too far in the rearview mirror. In just three SHORT years, Fulmer has gone from a highly regarded coach and recruiter to a friggin joke. All because of ONE losing season.
As sjt has pointed out so many times, that was inexcusable, but it happened, and its the ONLY losing season in his resume. The program has since gone on an upswing. These things take a little time. If this year we have 10 regular season wins, I'll take that as a full recovery, even if it isnt good enough for the SECCG.
I'm convinced that everyone in the media RELUCTANTLY gave Fulmer credit over his career, but his bland personality and his weight have kept him from being accepted in the "rock star coach" category. Just like real life, heavy, poor, ugly, or otherwise "not worthy" people get shunned. He isn't judged so much as a coach as a "personality". Sad.

Scout rankings are a joke how can you rank CPF 33. He is ranked below Mike Leach Tex Tech LOL. A lot of the coaches ranked above him have won very little

True moaning,
these are the same idiots who were screaming for Majors' head in 1992 after all his winning. People forget how bad all the other major programs have been while Fulmer has been around. Florida stunk it up with Zook (National joke), Alabama bad for years, LSU was horrible for years after the 80's thru the mid 90's, Georgia I think we beat them 8 in a row, Nebraska pretty bad of recent, LSU really bad until around 2001, Michigan well Appy St, Ohio St John Cooper, enough said, Penn St well haha, Florida St gotten really bad, Miami has had two bad streaks during that span, Notre Dame bad for a while, Oklahoma hurtin' til Stoops, Texas well very average until Mack. So lets review, since '92 every major program has had some very bad stretches, while Fulmer has had a very short one. I for one am very tired of hearing all the idiots on this site who basically don't know a thing about college football. As for that moron DC, well if that over rated piece of JUNK is #1 that tells me what a JOKE that poll is! Meyer will go down as one of the all time gimmick coaches of all time. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he blows all that talent down there and will be the laughing stock soon enough, like most of the other SEC coaches that have came and went will Fulmer keeps on winning. Saban, loser in the pros and lost to Louisiana-something!, Spurrier can't do it at SC and can't think of another SEC coach on to glory during his span only fired and gone to success. Miles, Richt and Tuberville have done well, but atleast wait for 17 years of SEC action first. Ask any of the other coaches and they have nothing but respect for Fulmer.
mbradshaw1#655539 writes:
I think Less (Nessman) Miles is a idiot! Enough said. Pappy always said, opinions are like A-holes and you know the rest.

Moaninglikeheck writes:
Honest to God people...Think about it. If Phil Fulmer looked like Nick Saban or Mark Richt, and had the exact same record and 16 year career, does anyone think he'd be even remotely disrespected as he has been? I'd wager he'd be near the top of those lists that were posted. There would probably still be some unhappy fans (there always are) and he'd have a little heat, but he's still be considered a top national coach universally and the legions of the miserable wouldn't even have a voice.

I agree with Moaninglikeheck... and I wonder how many of these Fulmer-flagelators are from K-town?
I grew up in Chattanooga, seldom hearing anything like that kind of hateful criticism of the Vol staff--even during Bill's Battle with Mayflower. Years later, got transferred to Knoxville ('84-'86) and couldn't believe how much knit-picking, finger-pointing rancor I heard from the locals--and seldom was it particularly knowledgable criticism! Maybe it's like college sophomores who go "liberal" in their politics, thinking that simply by being critical of their own country they somehow appear more sophisticated. (Of course, we all do something to feel superior to somebody else... like the way I keep my mullet nicely trimmed so I won't look like those rednecks from Bristol!)
But it must be a common phenomena... discovered the same deal among Saints fans when we moved to New Orleans (Jim Mora's first year). The further you got outside the parish, the more they loved and supported their Saints... but the more vocal segment of fans in NO thought everything the organization did was stupid, insulting, and doomed.

gator4life 9:05... DO YOU THINK THAT IF SPURRIER HAD A SEASON LIKE FULMER HAD FOLEY WOULD HAVE FIRED HIM? I THINK NOT. FULMER HAS A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND A COUPLE SEC TITLES. ZOOK DID NOTHING BUT RECRUIT WELL. BESIDES WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT UT WILL PROBABLY NEVER HAVE A COACH THAT CARES MORE ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY THAN HE DOES. I GUARANTEE MEYER DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT HIMSELF. BUT HE WINS SO THAT'S OK.SOMETIMES IT GOES DEEPER THAN THAT.
burntorangeVOLffle writes:
Zook had other issues than only winning 8 games a year. Remember the frat house incident? Didn't that hppen early in the year Zook got booted.? The loss to lowly Miss St was a tough blow. But think, if they had waited a week or two FL may have beaten UGA and they did beat FLSt at their place, something Spurrier never did if I'm not mistaken, things may have been different.
Basicaly Zook hurt the FL program image off the feild as much as on so he had to go. He's not a bad coach, he just wasn't ready to be the head man at a program like FL.

I definitely think there is some truth to your comments about CPF's appearance. It's a natural human reaction to favor more attractive people. Some will say hogwash, but there's a reason you don't see big fat people on TV shilling for Budweiser, Ford, etc, etc.
