Coaches focusing on situation, not starters

Often times a position battle in late August is cause for concern, a sign that someone hasn't shown the capability of locking down a starting position.

Not so in two instances for Tennessee's football team, both in the middle of its attack on offense and defense. In both cases, the Vols see strength in numbers.

The first of the two battles comes at defensive tackle, where seniors Demonte Bolden and Walter Fisher and junior Dan Williams are competing for playing time.

"I couldn't tell you right now who's going to walk out there first," defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks said of the UCLA game Monday night. "We're going to compete everyday.

"After the ball game, who performs? Those are the guys are that are going to start the next week."

UT has a similar scenario playing out at offensive guard, where Jacques McClendon's improvement on technique has the weight room warrior primed to be a star.

McClendon, who started six games last season and was first-string in all three scrimmages during preseason camp, seems poised to hold off fellow junior Vladimir Richard for a starting job at strong guard.

"It's nice to have your name called out in that starting lineup but we're not really focusing on whose going to be the starter right now," said Richard, who has yet to start at UT despite playing in every game last season. "Whoever is out there is going to get the job done."

McClendon said strong chemistry eliminates envy.

"We're just a tight knit group," he said. "We've all come a long way. To see how much we've all progressed as a group, it doesn't matter (who starts). We know we're all going to play. We believe we're all just as talented as another."

Offensive line coach Greg Adkins isn't ready to name starters for the UCLA game. He'll name starters and insert substitutes based on practice performance, match-ups and some good ole' fashioned coaching intuition. That means a concrete plan won't be in effect.

"It's not going to be a revolving door as far as a set rotation of any sort," Adkins said.

That should keep them motivated.

Touchy Touchy: Defensive coordinator John Chavis bristled when asked if he hoped cornerback Brent Vinson and defensive tackle Donald Langley would take their one-game suspensions for a violation of UT’s class-attendance policy as a learning experience.

“Yeah, I mean that’s obvious. Wouldn’t you think so?” Chavis said. “Gee, you don’t want to make the same mistakes over and over again. That’s what life’s all about. I made a bunch of mistakes growing up.

“I’m probably the only one standing around here that ever made a mistake. Nobody else ever made one but me. I made a bunch of them growing up. I hope I learned from them and I hope they learn from theirs.”

Slade Says: Defensive backs coach Larry Slade said he’s pleased with Vinson’s positive approach to spring practice despite having to serve a suspension against UCLA.

“That’s maturity certainly,” Slade said. “He went out and worked. We really appreciate how hard he worked.

“He got better during that time and he got better as a person. He’s focused now and hopefully he’ll stay that way.”

Ending it Up: Defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell said freshman Willie Bohannon could play against UCLA.

“If I can get him in the ball game at the right time, he’s close to being ready to helping us,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said he’ll definitely play the top four defensive ends on UT’s depth chart: senior Robert Ayers, junior Wes Brown and sophomores Ben Martin and Chris Walker.

Caldwell said Walker has responded well after missing last week’s practices with a groin injury.

“I think he feels good about his leg now,” Caldwell said. “The more comfortable he gets with that, the better his week will go.”

D’ed Up: UT coach Phillip Fulmer said part of the reason UT’s defensive ends were more productive late in preseason camp was due to an improved push by UT’s defensive tackles.

Fulmer said UT has had more push from its top three defensive tackles than anytime last year.

Notebook: Linebacker Gerald Williams did not practice on as he awaits his academic clearance. ... Tight ends coach Jason Michael said he is still evaluating freshman tight end Aaron Douglas to decide whether or not he’ll play against UCLA. Douglas, a former Maryville High School star, was slowed in the beginning of camp by a sore shoulder. ... Memphis junior Matt Reagan, a graduate of Bearden, and UT sophomore Daniel Lincoln have been named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List. The Lou Groza Award is presented to the nation’s top kicker. The 30 kickers on the list were chosen based on statistics from the 2007 season and 2008 preseason expectations.

I read somehwere else if the Williams situation isn't cleared up by Monday he'll probably have to transfer and give up his dream of playing for UT.

It seems he has accepted him, and he is enrolled in class, but in order for him to be eligible the correspondent math class he took has to be credited, I believe, by the JC in California.

The kid has waited long enough. It's time some adults do the right thing, and if he did pass the class, push the approval on through so he can get on with his life and football career.

I'd say the same thing about any kid no matter where he was playing. Enough is enough, give a young man his life. He's shown how badly he wants it and if he's jumped through all the hoops reward him.

I'm glad to see that there are players on the team, that don't want to sit on the bench. that shows me that we will have a really good team this year.

Well said

I am with you FWBVol. NCAA exists for the kids, not the other way.

Losing G Williams will be a huge hit to the D. Not only do I believe he would have been starting at MLB before too long, we also have no depth at the position. Have not heard much of anything about Chris Donald. Does anyone know who would be the back-up at that position w/out Williams?

PreventUT writes:

Savion Frazier or LaMarcus Thompson, I believe.

Any news on Marlon Walls?

Does anyone have a link to the Vols weight lifting records?

Pullingguard writes:

What is the definite word on G. Williams? Is he in or out or a wait and see situation.. If he is waiting on a Math class being accepted by the JC, then it seems if there is any question about the validity of that class then Williams evidently must have not received good direction on what would get him accepted and able to be eligible to play.

OakyVol09 writes:

Have not heard anything on Walls or Hughes. I think Friday is the last day to register for classes, so we will know for sure about them then.

I like Chavis. He sounds a little bit like a bear coming out of hibernation, but I get like that too, sometimes.

BSweet writes:

It's no secret that Chief has nothing but contempt for the KNS. It seems kind of childish for Hooker to call him out for it and try to make him look bad. How would Hooker feel if the TN coaching staff consistently questioned his reporting skills in a very public way, espousing negative opinions without knowing all the facts? The KNS staff, most notably John Adams, take a very negatively biased approach to their so-called reporting of UT sports. Hooker should be glad that they speak to him at all.

TK writes:

I would like to see Jacques McClendon also play a few snaps at DT maybe also some coal line. The strongest guy on the team should be able to get a push from DT. The depth is thin...WHY NOT?

BSweet writes:

So then it's official that it's only a one game suspension? The way Fulmer worded it when he made the announcement made it sound like it could be longer. I like hearing that Willie Bohannon is already pushing for playing time. I remember one of the recruiting services had him tabbed as a sleeper. Looks like they might have been right. This whole Gerald Williams situation has gone from absurd to utterly ridiculous. Why can't these administrators realize that they hold a kid's future in their hands? How would they feel if it was their kid getting jerked around? They need to get off their butts and get this situation resolved. Let him play!

jclowers writes:

I wonder why they didn't include the obvious battle for a starting spot at linebacker with Nevin McKenzie/Adam Myers-White..still no sure fire starter there.

Also what kind of question is that to ask? 'DO you hope they learn from their mistakes?' No I hope they get worse...

mbible1utk#324980 writes:

I really feel for Gerald Williams...to me the fact that he has not stopped trying to get in to UT tells me that he wants to play for the Vols... that's his driving force. If he just wanted to play the game I think he probably would just pull a Rolando Melancon and go to La. Tech or some other low standard school. The NCAA has treated him horribly, they've not made any special effort to get these grades to help him out. Whose side are they on? I'm all for nabbing a few hippies and setting them up at the NCAA headquarters with a "Free Gerald" banner.

Love the news about our D-line.Both at dt and de.
We really need to get those positions back up to Tennessee standards.Consistently.At times last year(Georgia,Arkansas)they were.
Stay focused.Stay hungry.
The prize awaits.

mbible, it's not the NCAA this time, it's the SEC rules and the UT admissions office.

jclowers, I agree, poor question. A better question would have been
"why did GW have to be held out of practice when he was practicing before and his situation hasn't changed?"
Or, "if GW is cleared on Friday will he be ready to play on Monday?"
How about, "are there any other players at risk right now of suspension or ineligibility due to academics?"

Love Chief calling out the reporter for a stupid question.

Coach Chavis had every right to "bristle" when asked such a stupid question. What was Chavis supposed to say--"Duh, no I hope they learn absolutely nothing from this experience." This line of questioning was about as dumb as some of the KNS polls. GOVOLS. UT beats UCLA 35 to 17.

Anyone know more about G.Williams and Marlon Walls?

bigfan 502,

About the 15th para starting with "Touchy Touchy:" Hooker writes, (shortened for brevity) that coach Chavis BRISTLED when asked if he "hoped" that Vinson's and Langley's one game suspension would be a learning experence for them. Not clear if Hooker or some one else asked the question. It is clear that it is a very dumb question. Obviously, beyond any question the Chief hopes, wants, and expects the suspension to teach them something. DUH!!! GOVOLS!! UT 35, UCLA 17.

How about a new KNS poll? Should the game meal serve fritters with unsweet tea or sweet tea??
