UCLA Bruins
LOS ANGELES - UCLA now has more quarterbacks injured than healthy. Freshman Nick Crissman underwent an MRI exam on his right throwing shoulder Wednesday after being hit while throwing passes as the scout team's quarterback Tuesday.
The Bruins are without Osaar Rasshan, who is nursing a sore knee; Ben Olson, out six more weeks because of a broken bone in his foot, and Patrick Cowan, out for the season because of a knee injury.
"It's the darnedest thing I have ever seen, the attrition rate we have at quarterback," UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said. "They're almost asking me to come back."
Freshman Kevin Prince, who is to be the third-string quarterback against Tennessee on Monday, took over running the scout team Wednesday.
Kia May Start: UCLA left tackle Micah Kia appears to be moving toward starting against Tennessee, less than two weeks after breaking his left hand.
Kia, one of two Bruins' linemen with game experience, went through a second day of workouts, using a smaller cast on the hand that allowed it more freedom.
"If the coaches need me, I'm ready," Kia said. "It feels good."
Kia's cast had restricted the use of his fingers. It was cut to cover only the lower part of his hand.
"I can use my hand blocking," Kia said. "Before, all I could do was poke people. There's not much pain, only some stiffness."
Having Kia, who started eight games last season, would improve the situation on the line. Brandon Bennett, a sophomore who has no game experience, had been playing left tackle while Kia was out.
"Micah Kia had a shaved-down version of the cast today and I think he was more functional," Neuheisel said. "Hopefully we'll get good news about the healing process and he'll be able to take it down a notch further."
While line coach Bob Palcic has mixed and matched the linemen throughout training camp, he will prefer to settle on one group for the game.
"There may be seven or eight guys that can be starters, but I'm not into subbing guys unless I see someone having difficulty," Palcic said. "That's a position, more than anywhere else, that there has to be a cohesiveness."
More training room news: Center Kai Maiava, a redshirt, is believed to have a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, Neuheisel said. . . . Wide receiver Marcus Everett returned to drills Tuesday, a day after sitting out because of a sore knee.

Tonight another season is upon us. In the SEC only the strong shall survive. We may turn on each other in our conference. Exhibit hatred towards one another like no other conference. The hatred between Bama-Auburn, UF-UT, UGA-UF, LSU-UT, Bama-UT, Auburn-LSU, Ole Miss-MSU, Vandy-?, Kentucky-UT, etc sorry if I left anyone out. Back to my point. We are like Gladiators. You can not compare USC, Ohio State, Texas and these other perpetrators to us because after a grudge match with one Titan you lick your wounds to only face another Titan the next week. Our fans do not exception nothing but perfection we tell our teams to come back home carrying your shield or come back home on it. Leave it all on the field, not even our coaches are safe. Plan, practice, and execute the game plan. Arrogance like Les Miles, my damn strong football team, is accepted and has a place in the SEC. Nice to see UCLA adopt this attitude. Come Monday, that Orange invades the West Coast once again. Father forgive them for the horror that is about to be unleashed unto the nation on national TV primetime. Parents put your kids in another room to watch the cartoon network. UT can not be held responsible for the graphic violence that lies in waiting. Parental Advisory is strongly suggested here. ESPN have you best technician ready to go to a commercial break. Smokey has awakened and is licking his chops. In the background I hear the battle sound of "Good Ole Rocky Top!" The surfer is alarmed to come out of the waters. The sharks flee the coast. We just don't know any better, shark meat might taste good to someone from the mountains. Fulmer holds the leash to the hound of hell. Devastation awaits you UCLA; all you can do is pray that it will be over quickly. But tonight let the SEC leave carnage in the form of NC State, RIP ACC!!! Gamecocks give them nothing, but take from them everything!!!!
Any errors, sorry, english wasn't my favorite class.

You're not allowed to do that man. It took until last year to get that dagger out of my football heart.

Sometimes when it rains, it pours. Neuheisel may want to take some time to look at his team's strength and conditioning regimen. In statistics, once is an anomaly, twice is a coincidence and three times is a pattern.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Even when empty, Neyland Stadium wows the eye and disconcerts the brain. Unlike other traditional wide-mouth college stadiums, it rises straight up into the heavens like a Deep South version of the Roman Colosseum, awaiting entry by unwitting, edible strangers.

Is UCLAs defense so good that it bangs up it's own QBs?? Last year, EA was sacked only about four times for the entire season--Will UCLA sack Crompton that many times in this game? Or does he have moves to escape?? Our OL will be the big key in this game. UT will try to run as much as possible early--maybe a long pass or two to loosen things up--but if that doesn't work, our WRs will go to work--long. Think Peerless Price in the '98 NC game. With OL help, Cromptin will have an impressive game. GOVOLS!!

UH OH!! Before any one starts it. I know our QB is JOnathOn CrOmptOn. Sorry. Most humble apology offered. But, you can't spell WIN without an "i".
pdhuff#552644 writes:
Maybe all those injuries to the Bruins could be that their defense was #29 last year and their O was around 90th.
Doesn't seem fair to practice.

Hotlanta-
Two of those QB's (Olson & Cowan) were hurt in non-contact drills. Cowan juked himself into a torn ACL and Olson broke his foot dropping back to pass TWICE!!! It doesn't have anything to do with their "D"... more like devine intervention.

Good thing we've got ArIan Foster and ErIc Berry. Heck we've even got DaN WIlliams. He can spell WIN by himself. Too bad there's absolutly no logic behind that theory.

This is no great loss for UCLA - hell, all a scout team QB has to do to imitate TN is throw a few bubble screens, a hitch to a TB now and then and maybe a screen or two. I'd say they can probably replace him with a DE or maybe an OL....the STORM IS BREWING.

I'm thinking there could be some crow eating come next Tuesday am.....not predicting, just saying if things continue as they have been going Bruins will run the waterboy out there. All I want is our VOLS to bring A game as if playing for NC.

I think vol88 was referring to 2001 although equally applicable to 2007, or for that matter 2005, albeit, it was out 2nd string QB that made LSU look foolish. If we play LSU in SECCG again maybe we give Crompton a hangnail and start Coleman/Stephans.
invisiblekid writes:
Not sure about anyone else, but I got a small chuckle and an evil glint in my eye from the thoughts of Neuheisel taking a snap from under center and getting drilled in the back by McCoy and popped under the chinstrap by Williams.
Moaninglikeheck writes:
I really wish that UCLA was fully healthy. Its lose lose for Tennessee as far as negative fans go. If UT beats the snot out of UCLA, the cry will be "We should have beaten them worse, they were playing their 3rd stringers". If we beat them close, we'll be in for "Woah is me, we couldn't even beat their 3rd stringers handily". And if we lose by any margin whatsoever, it will be "Foolmore does it again, burn him at the stake!!!"
We may as well forfeit and save everyone the trouble.
SFOrange writes:
Look, UCLA is clearly not in the best position to kick off 2008. UT seems to have advantages that will overcome any home field advantage the Rose Bowl will give teh Bruins (for those of you that have not been there--its only special for its historical significance and its location--the stadium itself is a bit 1960s). Vols are breaking in alot of new on the road---which could cause some problems. But in the end, its UT 38-21.

Rick never mentions that QB scrambles off the option. He almost beat Arizona State last year when they were ranked fourth in the nation...Don't be too cocky or we could be sad to devasted after game... I think game depends on our defensive line..if Bruins are able run with effect..we could be doomed..Its run against our defense. Are we able to tackle and pressure, remember in option play make QB make his decision quickly.
