UCLA sticks to special teams

LOS ANGELES - Three years in the NFL gave UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel a newfound appreciation for special teams. That's reflected in his coaching staff.

When Neuheisel assembled his new staff at UCLA this year, he included a full-time special teams coach, Frank Ganz Jr.

"I saw the value of it in pro football," said Neuheisel, who was the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator last year. "Having worked with Frank (with the Ravens), I saw some real expertise. And when he came available due to the dismantling of the Ravens staff, I started thinking what kind of advantage we might gain from that. So I thought it was a prudent move.

"Plus, his dad's an old UCLA coach. He's got some Bruin blood in him."

UCLA plays host to Tennessee.

Just For Kicks: The kicking game was in good shape before Ganz arrived.

Senior punter Aaron Perez ranked second in the Pac-10 last season with a 42.3-yard average. Sophomore placekicker Kai Forbath made 25 of 30 field-goal attempts last season, including 24 of his last 27.

Happy Returns: Terrence Austin is no DeSean Jackson but he's an experienced punter returner for the Bruins.

Jackson sparked Cal's opening-season victory over Tennessee with a punt return for a touchdown last season.

Austin, who is 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, has never returned a punt for a touchdown. But last year, he ranked fifth in the Pac-10 with a 10-yard average.

Austin also made strides during spring practice as a wide receiver. He had 17 receptions for 248 yards last season.

Kicking game appears to be solid.

If it was up to me, their return man would never touch the ball. Out of bounds 32 yards downfield.

Every time....

This is where UCLA will have to make something happen. Neusheister knows this is a must win area of the game in order for him to have a chance...I hope we are ready and play like the end of last year, not the beginning

Hey, our number 2 punter was averaging over 42 yards per punt in the scrimmages. Not the same as doing it in a game, but still a pretty good average for a newbie.

Tks, Gen Melon 10:10 -warms the cockles of the heart.

Saw a short piece on Frank Ganz once, appeared to be borderline insane with that mobile sound system, screaming non-stop.

At mega decibels....
