Lady Vols outlast Houston in volleyball

The morning after cruising through its season opener, the Tennessee women's volleyball team went the distance for a victory.

The Lady Vols outlasted Houston in five games - 25-12, 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 15-10 - for their second win at the Marquette Kickoff Tournament in Milwaukee.

UT opened Friday by sweeping Chattanooga.

"This was a match we probably would not have won last season,'' UT coach Rob Patrick said. "I am very proud of how we fought back to win the fifth (game) after not playing very well in the third and fourth games. When we were in system, we were extremely effective today. The thing that we need to learn from this match is how to sustain that level of play for an entire match without letting down."

Nikki Fowler led Tennessee's attack with 13 kills. Milan Clarke had 11.

Along with her offense, Clarke tied Leah Hinkey for the team lead in blocks with a personal-best eight. Chloe Goldman had 16 digs.

UT played host Marquette late Saturday.

Soccer: Indiana upset No. 14 Tennessee 2-0 late Friday in the Aggie Soccer Invitational in College Station, Texas.

Kelly Lawrence scored on a penalty kick in the 69th minute, and Liz Holby added a goal near the end of regulation.

Devon Beach was taken down to set up Lawrence's penalty kick.

"Devon just terrorized them,'' Indiana coach Mick Lyon said. "She was close to scoring three or four times."

UT plays No. 2 North Carolina at noon today. The Tar Heels beat No. 14 Texas A&M 3-2 Friday.
