Prospect Brown likes visit with Kiffin

Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin already has a plan in place for top prospect Marlon Brown.

"He told me that when I came in at first, I'd be running fades and slants, then screens, then posts," the 6-foot-5, 205-pound receiver from Harding Academy in Memphis said Tuesday. "That's great to me."

That falls in line with Kiffin's master plan of playing young players, a skill he exhibited as an offensive coach at Southern California.

How much will playing early be a factor for Brown, rating the state's best prospect by the News Sentinel?

"A lot, to be honest," he said.

Brown said he felt better about UT after meeting with Kiffin on Monday evening just hours after Kiffin was formally introduced at a press conference in Knoxville replacing Phillip Fulmer was dismissed on Nov. 3.

"He was real honest," Brown said. "He was cool."

Brown said he still has no leader for his services and is considering UT, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State.

He has already taken official visits to Georgia and Ohio State and has plans to take officials to UT, Florida and LSU.

We need you at UT. Hope you are excited about UT football and the new staff as I am. Come be a part of the future Vol success. It would be awesome for a Tennessee guy to be a part of the new Tennessee tradition....how about it Marlon.

Well lets just hope he comes on over to K-town and helps the Vols. Sounds like Coach Kiffin is going to actually put the best players on the field, not just say it like Clawson did.

Come on to KnoxVegas, son. At 6'5", you'll have no problems getting playing time!

Where is Savage when you need him? The guy has gone off of the grid. Come back and give us the scoop, please.

Basketball_Jones writes:

I will be shocked if this guy doesn't come here. The one thing I like about Kiffin is he plays the best players and he's not afraid to play freshman. I think he looks at great players like he will only have them 3 years anyway why not get the best out them while you got them.

I think guys like Austin Rogers and Luke Stocker need to take heed to the new regime and realize Loyal Phil is gone and now you have to actually make plays to see time on the field.

The way he said an employee of the AD told him to keep quiet about the news he was giving us...it wouldn't doubt me if he's in custody.

I picture him with duct tape over his mouth in a wheelchair like Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory...

In regards to Brown... he said he's a basketball fan also...well, son, we got some basketball for ya.

What? Are you serious? When did this happen? The guy wasn't naming sources or anything.

So, people in the Athletic Dept. read message boards? Hmmm....

Normally I would have to slam the whole cynicism is a cancer bit on ya, but I happen to partly agree with you for one reason....

Omar Gaither. The man took 4x Pro-bowler Jeremiah Trotter's job in Philadelphia (2007) in his second year.

At Tennessee, he had to wait until his Senior year to get on the field.

At least this is the way I remember it.

firefulmer (Inactive) writes:

So good to hear. I guarantee you Kiffin will not be afraid to play Freshman. With the other bunch of clowns we had, this guy might have played his senior year. Isn't it great to never have to hear again: "inexperienced" or "doesn't understand the pass blocking schemes", or "it will take awhile to learn our complex offense".

Dennis the Phil Fulmer way was to put the best juniors and seniors on the field.

I hope the Kiffin family can develop players once they get to UT. It would be nice to see a player get better over 4 years.

You know if you put a mustang in a stall for too long you will break his spirit.
I feel that has happen to several quality recurits UT has picked up the past several years

Basketball_Jones writes:

I agree with you 100%...I think some guys sat over there and then once they got their shot no matter how bad they were Fulmer stuck with them because they had "waited their turn"

As someone stated, he played the best Seniors. Underclassmen had to wait their turn, even if they were better players. If he had the best players on the field this year, then he had lost his recruiting ability

You mean a dual-threat quarterback like Tajh Boyd?

Basketball_Jones writes:

I was just listening to 99.1 and hey were using examples like Manning, Ainge, Berry etc Those players were played out of need. Manning played only because there was only him and Brandon Stewart, Ainge played because it was either him or the other freshman, and Berry was deserving but we were short handed at DB his freshman year due to injuries.

Fulmer was loyal to upper classman. Kiffin so far seems loyal to the best players.

I'm here.I was over on VQ reading responses to questions from Ryan Abraham, the publisher of USCfootball.com.Had some good info. The favorite word I heard several times was discipline.Said LK wasn't afraid to put someone on the bench no matter who it was.

Kiffin is all over the place.Been kind busy today so it's been tough to check in.

I wasn't exactly told to shut up.It was like "cool it sometimes".It wasn't for anything I said on here though.

The word on Brown is he's leaning toward a football only career. That would eliminate our trump card recruiter, Bruce Pearl. However, if we can get him in for a big time B-ball game that could change.I still maintain, at this point, Brown wears orange.

You can't be serious!

MrBamSeydu writes:

Every coach is going to tell Marlon Brown that he can get early playing time, but Lane Kiffin can tell him that he will be the go-to receiver from day one.

Gerald Jones is more of a poor-man's Percy Harvin... sort of a running back/receiver hybrid. We haven't had a scary receiver since Kelley Washington and Donte Stallworth. Even Robert Meachem never really impressed me too much, because he didn't seem agile. He was very good at breaking the first tackle and hitting the sideline with speed, but he wasn't quick. From what I hear, Brown is 6'5 and has a long stride but at the same time has quick shuffling feet.

We need a WR that people will be scared of to come in on opening day. I feel like Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, and LSU already have a player or two like that. So to me, the best decision Marlon Brown can make is UT. It's close enough to his home, but just far enough away. Kiffin has already said the freshmen will get first dibs on the starting jobs. Plus he would be the headliner in Lane Kiffin's first recruiting class, even though I have a feeling next year's recruiting class will be 5-star heavy.

Fulmer always denied that star-ratings meant anything, and now he is unemployed.
