No discredit to Chavis, who was a great defensive coordinator for years, but Monte gets my vote. I loved Chavis' defenses but third-and-long haunts me still. That and the dbacks being off the receivers 8 yards or more when we had the lead in the 2nd half of countless games (Georgia 2001, UCLA 2008, ie). Good luck Chavis but bring on Monte!

DennisVols writes:

Coach Chavis was good for UT. Year end and out our defense was NOT the weak link. But all things come to a time that change is needed.
I believe Monte will be a good change and will be a big help in the recuriting of top quality denfensive players.
I wish Coach Chavis the best and believe he will be back employed beofre long.

The KNS is ridiculous!!! Why keep stirring the pot? Hooker used to be ok with me but now he just tries to make news instead of reporting it !!!

Leave it to KNS to stir the pot. Weak.

THE FULL MONTE!

DroopyDrawers writes:

KNS is terrible. I didn't vote or look at the results. Keep on insulting the biggest industry Knoxville has, the University of Tennessee, and KNS will lose in the end. Why can't you write something positive? Stir the pot is correct and it is not going to get any better.

Do you really think Monte Kiffin is the best fit for UT? He hasn't recruited in over 20 years, if he does now, he wont leave the city, when is the last time he played against the option like so many people are now running from shotgun and the 1 back set? I don't know if you can continue running Tamp 2 coverage i college the way you can in the pros. Who will Monte hire as his assistants? Sounds like Lane is letting him run the show on defense and will probably let him hire the defenseive assistant's.

Take a look at the coaches who have been assistants under Kiffin at Tampa and are now head coaches in the NFL. I don't think he will have any trouble getting assistants. If I wanted to learn from the best, I would beg to coach for Monte.

I have nothing but respect for Coach Chavis. And i suspect he will be coaching next year. However, i do not think Monte will be a downturn at all. Quite the opposite. And Chavis did very little recruiting either.
Even if Lane had wanted to keep Chavis, I really do not think he would have stayed because his allegiance with Fulmer

That's exactly what I'm saying. The Defense was rated 6th in the Nation, 2nd in the SEC. The offense was rated 115th in the Nation. Losses to UCLA, SC, Auburn and Wyoming can all be connected to our offense's inability to move the ball, control the ball, and score points.
In the UF game 2 times the offense turned the ball over inside UF's 5 yard line costing UT 14 points and even a chance at that game.
The funble in the endzone against Auburn cost UT that game. The inability to score TD's and offensive turnovers cost UT the UCLA game.
If you cannot see that it was the offense that cost UT not only the '08 season but also the '05 season then you are not paying attention.

I might as well be the d-cord. I'm already the Tennessee heavyweight champ.

What about head kegger asst?

Will need time off for mentoring and finalizing contracts on our on-going "no-ring" shirts.

My DB philosophy will be find a potential receiver (preferably before the ball is snapped) and stay on him till the whistle blows.

Then do it again until you see their punter coming in.

Neat, huh.

Actually, with a strong offense we could have gone 10 and 0. It's all about winning.
