Tennessee strong safety Eric Berry was named the winner of the Jack Tatum Award on Thursday. The award is presented by the Touchdown Club of Columbus (Ohio) to the best defensive back in college football.
Named for Ohio State and NFL legend Jack Tatum, the award is the latest in a long line of postseason honors for the sophomore. Berry became Tennessee’s first unanimous All-America selection since Antone Davis in 1990 after being a first-team selection of all five NCAA-recognized organizations. He was also named SEC Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press and the league’s coaches.
Berry led the nation with seven interceptions, returning a pair for touchdowns. He also added three sacks and was third on the UT defense in tackles.
The award will be presented during the 54th Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards Banquet on Feb. 7.

Didn't the Thorpe Award go to some guy at Ohio State? And this award is from the Touchdown Club of Columbus? Even they know the real deal. Way to go ESPN...
dcvolfan98 writes:
Congratulations Eric!! You earned it. BTW, does Berry remind anyone else of Ed Reed? They seem to have the same skill sets.

Didn't a guy from Ohio State win the Thorpe? This award is based in Columbus and Berry won it. Says all you need to know about the (ir)relevance of the Thorpe going forward.
volnbig11land writes:
Exactly! I live among the suckeye faithful and even some of them were blown away that junkins won it over Berry.
Way to go Eric, thanks for representing the Vols.
Good luck next year and here's to you winning them ALL!

Berry not winning the Thorpe Award goes back to the whole country's disdain for Tennessee. See Peyton Manning. It is obvious when the Touchdown Club of Ohio gives an award to a Tennessee player and one of their own Malcolm Jenkins didn't win their own award but did win ESPN's baby the Thorpe. The Thorpe Award is a big Dam* joke like the Heisman is and they both have more of a national vote. While the Touchdown Club of Ohio is a localized vote and they actually took off their blinders and looked at the stats. Tennessee players don't have much of a shot at the national awards. Everybody hates us.

I'm afraid it is bigg. Who woulda thunk there was someone like that typing among us?

Hear hear. Props to savage. Can't wait for thse announcements...
SemperVol writes:
This is the best post of the day... bravo, Southpaw.
They really should think about renaming the awards when a guy who wins said award is actually better and more pivotal than the person the award is named after.
Just a thought.
NeylandWest writes:
Interesting - weren't his numbers similar to Charles Woodsons a few years back? Yet he didn't get any Heisman consideration. Go figure.
