Receiver Green commits to Vols

Tennessee picked up another significant commitment in the young Lane Kiffin era.

James Green, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, informed UT's coaches of his decision to be a Vol on Monday morning.

The star receiver from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Fla., picked UT over Florida State and Florida.

Since Kiffin took over for Phillip Fulmer earlier this month, UT has picked up commitments from Hillsboro cornerback Eric Gordon and defensive lineman Arthur Jeffrey Jr. from Booker High School in Sarasota, Fla. Kiffin has also convinced two formerly committed junior college prospects, Alcoa defensive end Rae Sykes and defensive tackle Jonathan Hollins from Baton Rouge, La., to re-sign with UT. Both did last week.

The recent influx in talent is much needed as UT lost six commitments due to its coaching change.

UT has 18 commitments for the 2009 class. National Signing Day is Feb. 4.

No QB is needed. My understanding is that Kiffin went after this guy because he has great feet which he can use to catch really low passes.

Good catch, welcome to UT. Slot receiver across the middle? You don't have to be a speed burner for that & this kid has the size. Just a thought.

Go VOLS!!!

Kiffin also said he is not worried about getting a QB in this class during his press conference. Apparently he thinks someone we have now will work out......

According to some USC sites, many believe that Carroll will ultimately end up at Cal. Apparently, his mother doesn't want him going to USC and the fact that Sarkisian is no longer there may play a factor too. Article also stated that it was his dream to play at Cal.

From what I've read, its 50/50 whether he sticks with SoCal. Don't believe UT will be the beneficiary if he goes elsewhere. You never know though, he's visiting and anything can happen.

I've actually seen KNS quoted as a source on Vol Nation a couple of times, but usually they are sucking hind tit on most stories. Oh well, they're a newspaper, what do you expect.

Go VOLS!!!

Great pick up...Hope we have a QB by Sept that will be consistently good. We all have bad days, players have bad games, but not 7 or 8 (aka Crompton). Then when you get someone in youre so scared of the mistakes that when one is made, you might yank him too soon. Then totally ignore what could possilby be the best of the bunch. Soooooooooo, you move Crompton to TE, and open the position battle up to Stephens and Coleman and one other. I really really cant imagine Crompton takin the field as QB(makes me shutter). He has definitely proven that he CANNOT get it done, and that had nothing to do with the SYSTEM. Could it possibly e that he was just over rated? I hope we learn from our mistakes, and get a good field leader at QB.

Go Vols

Just Keep choppin away at this recruiting thing! Remember: although we got an early jump in recruiting earlier this year, tennessee is known for closing strong. So expect some guys to really enjoy the Tennessee experience on official visits and some surprise visits. Even Kiffin said we've got top notch facilities compared to So. Cal! Lets pick up some more prospects and get ready for spring practice! Go Vols!

We don't just want any QB in America. Don't sign a mediocre QB who will sit the bench and take up a scholarship. Wait till we can get a top QB next season. Kiffin got in late and most of the top QB's have already committed. If he can steal one...Great!! But if he doesn't it's not a big deal until next year.

Rivals has him at 4.55 for the 40 and that's really good speed for an 18 year old.

Human timers - even with digital stop watches - vary by 0.50 seconds. So if it's not computerized start and finish - like the NFL combine - the 40 times are meaningless.

Also consider that an Olympic sprinter takes about 0.24 seconds on average to get out of the blocks after the gun. The NFL combines don't use a gun, it starts with the runner leaving the blocks. So, you can be fast, but it's just as important to go on the snap count.

DeSean Jackson was the fastest WR at the NFL combine at 4.35 seconds -- only 15 players in NFL history have run 4.30 or better (and not all of them were good). So at 18 years old, this kid is about 0.5 m/s or about a step behind DeSean Jackson over 40 yards.

Terrell Owens is about 4.60 on the computer timing right now -- Carl Pickens was about the same.

Its funny the difference in recruiting rankings,on scout green is 71 overall WR and a 3 star, and on Rivals hes 32 overall WR and a 4 star, either way hes still a good pick up to go along with Jeron Stokes, now we need Marlon Brown.Good Job Coach Kiffin and Welcome to Tennessee Mr.Green.

We are definately the front runner, but it's not a done deal yet.

More good news from the Hill! And, its looking like Monte Kiffin is going to get an early exit from Tampa Bay, so there could be some serious momentum building from Rocky Top. If we get the elder Coach Kiffin on Campus for some of those last minute visits, this class could really take off!

However, I really am not as concerned with the *s anymore. I trust Coach K and his staff to be good evaluators, so anyone committing from here out should hopefully be a good addition. The *s are just good to look at for us boarders.

Keep it up!

I'm glad they got another receiver, but rivals has him with a 4.6 40time. That is pretty slow. That is more like the speed of the Titans receivers than SEC caliber speed at wide out.

Thanks CTownVol. DCflorida didn't think so but it's clear that he doesn't have a damn clue about what he's talking about and I can guarantee you that he has never been timed on track.

If he did, maybe he could give us an explanation for Terrell Ownen's "speed problem".

But there is something fundamentally wrong with a Gator that has posted almost 1,000 times on a Vol site.
