South Carolina reports 11 secondary violations

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s athletic department is reporting 11 secondary NCAA violations in the past six months, including two from the program of new women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley.

The school said Tuesday that a women’s basketball coach improperly text-messaged a prospect and a coach incorrectly publicized an informal practice scrimmage.

The name of the coach wasn’t included in the report. All violations are considered low-level infractions of NCAA rules.

Staley was hired as the school’s new women’s basketball coach in May.

The school releases such violations twice a year because of regular open-records requests by The Associated Press and other news organizations.

The department said it also conducted 661 drug tests. Five came back positive for marijuana and one for alcohol.

In the past, South Carolina has recorded violations such as football coach Steve Spurrier’s wife, Jerri, sending hand-written notes to families of players who signed with the Gamecocks.

All requests to restore athletes’ eligibility connected with the latest batch of violations were granted, the school said.

For women’s basketball, the text-message violation took place Oct. 1 and was classified as Level I, meaning it is submitted to the NCAA enforcement staff through the SEC office.

The violation for publicizing the scrimmage occurred in November and was considered Level II, which means the SEC office collects such infractions and submits a report to the NCAA at the end of the academic year.

I see that USC is at least reporting their violations; UA, UF, UGA will have to get caught and serve time.....

Maybe the "ole coach" needs to bush up on the NCAA rule and regulations since he was so critical of Lane Kiffin recently.

only one of these was from the football program

One vilation is all it takes. "Only one" was from the football program. Isn't that like being a little pregnant? Spurrier was waiving one hand to draw attention to Kiffin while his other hand was doing dirty work.

Darn! If only she could have typed them Stevie could gotten away with murder! Murder I tell you!!

Really fellas...sounds like this has nothing to do with their football....interesting I guess, but who really cares about SC womens B-ball rules violations. I would rather have a staring contest with J. Adams.

I guess then that the blazing light that I saw flying across the sky earlier tonight from the southeast was the ol' ball coach's flung visor and not santa trying out new running lights.

Lord forgive me for saying that, and I pray for the Pygmies in New Guinea.

Karma is finally coming around and kicking Spurrier right in the groin -- multiple times. Have been waiting for this to happen since the mid-'90s.

Who really cares?? Every program that wants to compete has to break rules.

There isn't a clean program in the SEC.

Looks like it may have been our girls Carla or Princess that did the texting. I hate to hear that!

Spurrier was worried about Kiffin violating policy?

Alabama has reported minor violations of

1. Claiming two national championships in football this year.
2. Paying each high school recruit $47,000 and a pack of fun size Snickers.
3. Too many trailers in the Dean's yard.
4. At least one assistant coach got drunk in public and called his wife "a fat pig". Actually his wife was not around, it was indeed a pig.

Well well Steve,.....what was your score on your test?

I would venture to say, with extreme confidence, that you did not get 40 out of 40.

You can't spell infractions without the letters SC

If his wife is sending out the cards maybe she took the test for him to!

Maybe we should settle this debate about the two wifes this way:

1) Wet T-shirt contest (10 points)
2) Bikini contest (10 points)
3) NCAA recruiting test score (10 points)

May the best wife win!

If these "violations" were the worst of what goes on at SC, then Steve Spurrier and company are choir boys.

I can list at least 5 players on his roster that are breaking far more serious violations.

Then again, I could write a 5 page paper on all of the violations that have occurred at Tennessee and a complete novel about Alabama.

The NCAA acts like it isn't going on because they don't want to deal with it. EVERY team does it!! They couldn't compete if they didn't.

Ain't it refreshing that our coach is the one poking jabs at Spurrier now a days?
