Former University of Tennessee basketball standout Alexis Hornbuckle, who became the first women’s player to win a collegiate national championship and a WNBA championship in the same year, has been named the West Virginia sportsperson of the year by the Charleston Gazette.
Hornbuckle, who was part of back-to-back championships at UT, won a WNBA title with Detroit. She is the first female to win the West Virginia honor since it was first awarded in 2000.
Meanwhile, Lady Vols guard Shekinna Stricklen was named SEC freshman of the week after scoring 25 points in a 79-69 overtime victory over Stanford Sunday night.
Stricklen scored eight of UT’s 11 points in overtime, including consecutive 3 pointers.

We need a player like Strik. We need her consistency, her toughness and stability. (No, we don't have it yet) She is a strong guard for us just as Hornbuckle was for 4. Alexis TOOK the starting spot from Wiley-Gatewood. She earned the spot. Although Lex wasn't always the scoring machine, she was key in almost every game.
I'm so happy she received this accolade. She's certainly deserving.

Props to Lex! IMO, there aren't enough accolades to be given or adjectives to describe what she did for her teams. Lex was the glue that held everything together. We sure miss #14 on the floor.
Those are three very impressive players who have worn that number. Anyone who comes in and wants 14 needs to be aware of the history of what Lex, Kellie and Mary (another West Virginian) have meant to this program.
Those three Lady Vols contributed for 4 SEC Championships; 7 SEC Tourney Championships and 5 National Championships as well as eight Top 5 rankings and three Top 10 rankings. Pretty heady stuff!

Thanks for that info, BOV. The homologous nature of the #14 hadn't occurred to me. KJ was one of the smartest PGs we've ever seen wear the orange. Lex was as cool and confident as any guard I've seen. Mary O has a spot in 11 of the top 10 individual career stats records for the Lady Vols. I expect Stricklen to make her mark as well.

Way to go, Alexis! Another outstanding Lady Vol and person recognized in the news. Thank goodness Pat's protégées are around to make the university shine in the public spotlight. Lane Kiffen should take a leaf from Pat's playbook on expectations of behavior.

Once again it's mike from uconn. You must be one unhappy fella, i must say. Mike it is ok to support your favorite team but to constantly belittle or put down others shows everyone reading these posts that you have a lot of bitterness & anger. It is the Christmas season so let's chill with the ridiculous comments that come from your computer. Finally i hope you have a great 2009. GO LADY VOLS

Thanks for you strong interest in Rocky Top.
We appreciate it.

Well when you haven't even sniffed the National Championship Game in the last four years and have only made it to the Final Four once, it is a blow to the monumental ego of their fanbase and GenoSmurf. What do you expect from them, class? Bwahahahahahahahaha.
Let's recount shall we:
2005 - spanked by Stanford to the tune of 17 points - Sweet 16
2006 - Duke breaks their hearts with a 2 point overtime win - Elite 8
2007 - humiliated by LSU in a 23 point rout - Elite 8
2008 - Stanford again by 9 this time but it wasn't that close - Final Four

Mike come back if UConn EVER has more National Championships than the Lady Vols and you actually have something to crow about! Until then you are just whistling past the graveyard sonny and we couldn't care less about you, what you think, UConn or GenoSmurf.

Mike, your program, teams, coaches and fans will always look and smell like #2.
