Former Auburn running backs coach Eddie Gran is waiting to hear back from new Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin after interviewing with him last Sunday.
Gran told The Birmingham News that Kiffin told him the staff he is putting together would not likely grow until after the NFL's regular season ends Sunday.
Kiffin has publicly confirmed three hires to his staff:
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who is Lane Kiffin's father.
- Former South Carolina quarterbacks coach David Reaves, who is Lane Kiffin’s brother-in-law.
- Former Oakland Raiders offensive line coach James Cregg.
Lane Kiffin plans to be in Tampa, Fla., for Sunday's game between the Raiders and Bucs. Lane Kiffin was fired by the Raiders four games into his second season as coach on Sept. 30.
Gran was not retained by new Auburn coach Gene Chizik.
Gran, who recruited the Miami and South Florida area for Auburn, was also former coach Tommy Tuberville's special teams coach.
Some high-profile running backs Gran has coached at Auburn (1999-2008) include Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown and Rudi Johnson. At Ole Miss, Gran was running backs coach (1994-98) during Deuce McAllister's run.
Gran has also been receivers coach at Idaho State (1994), receivers coach at Cincinnati (1992-93) and quarterbacks coach at Miami (1990-91).

Wow! Thats quite a list of backs! They all ran hard and did not tap dance in the hole or bust it outside instead taking it to the defense. I hope it works out and we get this guy.

I live in south Alabama and some players at Troy say that Ed recuited them with a open hand when he was at Ole Miss. So, if we bring him on board,he can recruit but he may bring us problems in the future.
VolinCalif writes:
Well Aub has had a lot of talent. But I really don't know much about Gran
bhjohnso#207063 writes:
First!
oske writes:
0h yeah, FIRST!
bhjohnso#207063 writes:
I guess dude was at Ole Miss too? That's where McAlister played, not Auburn.
ctownvol writes:
Exactly what I was thinking. Hello? Are the proofreaders on Christmas vacation or something?
dshawn13#224876 writes:
I was talking about Ed Orgeron. I don't know much about this guy but I know Auburn has not recuited well in the last few years in South Florida.
suPEARLman writes:
Man, can't wait for some official announcements on the staff. Just right around the corner.
And HAHA at the idiots who typed 1st but were really 4 and 5. What do you get out of typing "FIRST" anyway? Money, cookies, a high five? I mean really....

This sounds like Kiffin is really doing his homework instead of just hiring big name guys or going after the big $$ men. This sounds like a great hire. I dont know much about this guy but if he can recruit those kind of players...the future looks BRIGHT Orange in Knoxville!!!

I only saw 1 state first. The same # as I saw respond to the statement.

I agree with you, I think Lane know what he is doing. can't wait until springs Org/Wht game. We are going to see a new Vol team.
VolinCalif writes:
I believe you. I think Mkiffin is picking his own Def. coaching staff. That will sure make it fun, but I look foward to seeing who Lane picks on the Off. There are tons of great coaches in the pro's.It going to be fun in the next couple of weeks.

deuce went to ole miss

ok?

Duece played at Ole Miss, he just wanted to play at Auburn ;)

So, is the point of the article that Eddie Gran will or won't become a Vol football assistant? Yes or no? Otherwise, there is no news value! Lane Kiffin told him that the staff won't grow until after the NFL season ends. Is Gran expecting a call to be affirmative or negative? This is the kind of disconnected rambling that I get from psychotic patients, where I introduce myself, and they string together non-stop disconnects for the next several minutes! Let's buy a round of Haldol for the KNS sports staff! Go Vols! SAVol
Volsrbest writes:
Don't forget, the article says he coached those players. It doesn't say anything about him recruiting them. I think any decent coach could be very successful coaching the talent he has had. Obviously, CLK sees something in this guy that can help the staff...or he is a third cousin. :-)
ArealVolFan writes:
Okay I'm going to assume that they went back and updated this article....because there are way too many people sitting here repeating Duece went to Ole Miss not Auburn, when thats clearly what the article says.

Didn't intend to sound smart A@@, I think it is old asso but it's their fun factor.
VolinCalif writes:
I thought a little along that line also. Maybe Lane just did some interviews to appease. But as busy as he appears to be I doubt it was the case.

Where did Karl Childers play?
rednekmuslTN writes:
No correction is needed. The article CLEARLY states that Gran was at Ole Miss during the Deuce years. Where did the proofreader err?
gohawks1 writes:
He played for the Southern Slingblades.

You're a little late, red. They've already updated the article.

Well I guess that sense we've in the quite period and it is the day after Xmas we can't complain to much about this crum of sporting news. Well.... like H333 i can't.

Your assumption is correct.

You make some excellent points SAVol. Guess we'll just have to await close of business in the NFL for answers.

This just in:
Kiffin, at approximately 2:15 p.m. on 12-26-2008, announced the following new hires to his coaching staff:
Lotta Swagger, Kiffin's mother-in-law, who will be knitting all new orange and white corduroy jerseys for the players,
Neppie Tissem, Kiffin's second cousin, who will be searching the family tree for more relatives to hire over more qualified applicants,
and last but not least,
Anita Job-Bad, who will take care of public relations (Kiffin will need this hire to fight off the rumors of family inbreeding and nepotism).
Happy New Year to All!!!

Makes quiet a lot of since too me.
philfan writes:
Kiffin's coaching staff is getting whiter and whiter by the day. We need much more diversity than this. Fulmer always made it a point to have a fully integrated staff. People expect it now.

Amen! I agree.
Ironcity writes:
The point of the article is this guy interviewed for the job and he thinks the staff will come together after the NFL season (which is Sunday). Its not up to the paper to determine if he will or will not get the job. It sounds like you want the paper to report things before they happen.
cainclifton23 writes:
Does it Matter what color the coaches are as long as the know what they do a good job.
Im sure lane would like to get Trooper Back.
and im sure hed like to have Lovie Smith,Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy, Turner Gill. Charlie Strong, Herm Edwards...
There is not THAT many black candidates available to hire in the first place..

What? We may have a special teams coach? What a novel idea! This may lead to actually using special teams to our advantage, something that hasn't been done very well for many yers. We may follow Florida's lead and make it a privilege to play on special teams, not just a chore.

Hardestly is very injury prone.
Poole with be his back up.
It will be
Hardest/Poole Main back
Creer/Oku Receving/APB
Then Williams for Goal Line.
We will run a lot of formations with two RB's instead of a fullback

But Phil worked like heck and watched a lot of film...... I really shouldn't through darts, Phil was a great coach just couldn't weather the storm of changing times
cainclifton23 writes:
I don't really count that.
You all didnt have Demps and Rainey when he was there...
and Harvin was more of a WR.
cainclifton23 writes:
Just because they never panned doesnt mean you can fully blame it on Drayton. Maybe it was the system or something,
Besides Emmit UF has never really had a good RB.
and Demps/Rainey are in a catergory of their own.
