Florida promotes Addazio to offensive coordinator

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Urban Meyer picked offensive line coach Steve Addazio to succeed Dan Mullen as offensive coordinator.

Mullen, hired as Mississippi State’s head coach earlier this month, still was expected to call plays when the top-ranked Gators play No. 2 Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series national title game Jan. 8 in Miami.

“I’m excited to keep the continuity of our play calling within our current staff,” Meyer said in a statement Saturday. “Steve has played a key role in our offense in his time at Florida. Our entire offensive staff is involved in game planning and scripting plays. As always, I will remain very involved in the offensive game plan.”

Addazio, who served as Indiana’s offensive coordinator before arriving at Florida in 2005, has worked with Meyer six years. They also spent two years together at Notre Dame.

Meyer said receivers coach Billy Gonzales, running backs coach Kenny Carter and tight ends coach John Hevesy will continue to have roles in calling plays and putting together game plans.

Addazio, though, got the promotion.

“I’m extremely humbled because I know it is a group effort of our offensive staff and players that have made us successful and will continue to make us successful,” Addazio said. “Coach Meyer’s track record obviously speaks for itself with his previous coordinators.”

Mullen became the third former offensive coordinator under Meyer to become a head coach elsewhere. Former Utah offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was hired at UNLV, and former Bowling Green offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon was hired at Bowling Green.

How long before we hear what a great move this was?

It is already all over their rivals boards about how smart this is of Urban and that Gonzo would never leave Florida because he is so loyal to Urb, and UT is such an inferior team... blah blah blah. Pardon me while I vomit from my taste of the laced Gator-ade.

IS THERE A CHANCE THAT GONZALES LEAVES FAGATORS FOR TENNESSEE SINCE HE DIDNT GET THE JOB AND HAS ANYBODY KNOW FROM THE NFL THAT KIFFEN IS WAITING TO TALK TO

FLAVOLS writes:

Who cares?!
He will be a glorified clipholder like any Florida OC since we all know who is running the show.

There is a good chance we get Gonzales he has been in communication with Kiffin but will talk officially until After NCG. If we do not get Gonzo it will not be that big of a deal.

This was one of the main reasons that Gonzales had not moved to Knoxville yet. It's just a matter of time now. He will be the OC at UT in title very shortly.

IF Gonzales were to come to Knoxville, it'd be an immediate help in recruiting as he is working on Carroll and Stokes.

He has been with Meyer for a long time so I am not counting on anything yet.

Why would Kiffin bring in a WR coach from a spread offense if he wants to run a prostyle?

Gonzales is a good position coach and a good recruiter, but he is not a prostyle offensive coordinator.

God, you guys are unbelievable, Let me count the ways the Vol fans have counted out the MIGHTY GATORS !

(1) Urban won the National championship with Zook players
He cant win with his own Recruts.
(2) Oh, losing Stan Drayton will hurt the gators and will help us. Yeah right
(3) Oh, losing CI, they now will have no tight end and it will hurt them.
(4) Tebow can run but he can't throw, Go and Disrespect him again by putting your scout team QB wearing a Superman shirt
(5)Gonzales is leaving The best "O" in the nation, To run a pro style "O" which Kiffin said he was going to run.
(6)The gators have no tradition but have a winning record vs the Vols.
(7)The Sooners are going to kick the Gators butt.
Way the think SEC fan's

Listen, Kiffin is 50/50 at best.(and you know it) and he is getting a late start while waiting for his coaching staff to come in .He is 2 years maybe 3 Years from being a player in the SEC east.

Hey Dekan, some of us Vol fans are anxious, excited and on edge, and no doubt we go a little over the top sometimes, but take your whiny @$$ back to your own board. It's obvious that you like to kick a man when he is down. But I can remember not so long ago that Florida had been in the same situation just before you got Meyer. How did he work out for ya? We hope Kiffin does the same. And while I am for the SEC in all bowl games, I wouldn't go as far as to say that you all have the best offense in the nation. Don't flatter yourself, OU's offense is pretty good. That is what I would be talking about instead of kicking Vol fans. Then again, it just goes to show that A.) your searching for any interviews on Gonzales, worried that you might lose him now, or B.) your just as interested in our new coach, and your wanting to see what he is doing, after all, he seems to be gaining ground already. Good luck Dekan. Hope you find what you are looking for!

Perfect examples: Notre Dame after Lou Holtz, Nebraska after Tom Osborne, Miami, FSU, Michigan, so on and so on. It's inevitable..it's coming...and I for one can't wait.

Its hard not to be productive wit hthat many playmakers. but when you dont have those two players, you may have to have a great offensive mind to get the ball spread out.

even though meyer can do it, mullin loss will be a felt

DC dont say you will never lose to Wyoming ever cause I bet if you look back in the gators past they have lost to teams worse than Wyoming.
But past season records dont matter in gay land does it ?
you idiots kill me. you think the college football world revolves around Fla and Meyers wont leave Fla until his kids have graduated.you idiots are so easy to fool.

DCflorida - In earlier posts you mentioned one of the major reasons Gonzales would not leave is he would be promoted to OC at Florida. I realize he has spent his coaching life primarily in the spread, but two good reasons for Gonzales to change schools are to get the OC title and for more money. He may choose to stay at Florida, but it appears there are some good reasons to consider a change to another institution. Also, many assistants have aspirations of being a head coach some day. If Kiffin is successful, he won't be at UT more than 4-5 years. According to you, Meyer is not leaving Florida for at least 10 years. Seems UT could offer a better opportunity to become a head coach. Again, I don't know what direction he will choose to go any more than you do, but there appear to be some arguments to be made to consider making a change.

Ole Miss was close enough this year, but once you chumps lose Oscar Meyer and St. Tebow you will!Ha Ha! Remember those marvelous Zook years!!!! Go Vols!! I still think it's funny you losers are on here and not a Oklahoma site!!

DCflorida - You are not that many years out of a loss to Miss State and having the Zooker as your head coach, so get off the high horse. Enjoy the succcess while you can because this is a sport that runs in cycles.

utkedu writes:

One last note for the Florida (or any other SEC team) fans who have been kind enough to join the UT board, prepare for some very tough recruiting battles with UT in the future. There are two reasons. 1. We are bringing in coaches that do a great job of recruiting the southeast, especially Flordia. 2. Would you rather prepare for the NFL by playing for a college team that has one of the best NFL coaching staffs in the country (including in the NFL) or would you rather play for a team that has taken "Superman" and used him up so much in college that he is looking at a 4th or 5th round draft pick and being projected as either an H-Back or QB?

Florida has a great team and deserves all of the respect they are currently getting, including the #1 ranking, but getting the best high school players just got a little bit tougher. If the best players want to prepare to play in the NFL, UT will be able to put together a very strong sales pitch.

You wont need that great of an offensive mind to spread the ball out, if those two leave its not as if there are not some key home run players still there. Tebow obviously is tough to replace but his replacement with be John Brantley. Brantley is more of a passer than Tebow. (Actually broke all of Tebows HS records) So I would expect to see the offense change a little bit more toward pass first then run. As for when Harvin leaves after this year (its a given). Deonte Thompson is a name to remember, additionally there is still Riley Cooper, Chris Rainey, Jeff Demps, Aaron Hernandez and even Carl Moore who most forgot about this year because of such a deep WR corp and Emmanuel Moody who got lost in the rotation because of early injuries. Give me that group any day and I think I could even manage to play call some good plays.
