Alabama attorney general investigating Smith, agent

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The state Attorney General’s office is looking into alleged contact involving University of Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith and an agent.

The Outland Trophy winner’s suspension from the Sugar Bowl reportedly stemmed from dealings with an agent by either Smith or a family member.

A spokesman for Attorney General Troy King told The Tuscaloosa News on Tuesday that King is aware of the allegations and intends to begin an immediate review to decide whether to open a formal investigation.

Bence said the attorney general’s office has prosecuted several sports agents.

Alabama law requires sports agents to register in the state and prohibits some contacts with athletes such as giving them money before a contract is signed.

Easy peasy, lemon-squeasy.

You'd dish out the same rants if this were Jerod Mayo last year. Obviously we don't have to worry about any first-rounders coming out of this year's bunch.

Happy New Year! Go Vols!!!!

LOL at the bama fan calling someone else a moron. Our newspaper in Huntsville quoted Saban as reporting this as a 'violation of team rules', and indicating he was vague about the situation.

How many times have we heard "We enforced the penalty ourselves" from Bama fans in the past 15 years?

The reality is that the state will be more interested in punishing the agent than the player.

I have always said that Alabama is a "win at all costs" type of athletic program(great academic university, though), irregargless of how this current situation unfolds. Though the information sounds incriminating, we should see how this plays out first. Remember what happened recently with D. Morley for us. However, IF this turns out to be true...Bama should receive the stiffest penalty the rules will allow, even if it means banning Alabama football from the NCAA. Let's just hope our own athletic program has does not follow suit. Though I like Coach Kiffin, his comments in regards to UT and the NFL make me admittedly nervous. Rarely have I heard him mention the importance of academics(I didn't say never). Penn State manages to produce world class athletes, and at the same time, still gets those folks a great education. We should follow that model, instead of Bama's or USC's. So, while we(me included) all chuckle at Alabama's potential new problem...Let's keep our own house clean.

That's the ridiculous part. In most states, the agent walks and the athlete pays the price. The state of Alabama has it right on this one. Of course, truth be told, Mr. Smith is on the verge of being a 22 year old multi-millionaire so who can blame him if he's not all that upset about a suspension versus risking injury (and financial independence) in a meaningless game. Now if they were playing Oklahoma for the NC, and I were a Bama fan, I would be honked off for sure. But you guys can beat Utah with the second string and Andre has certainly done his share to bring you back into national prominence. I say wish him well and let him go on to the bigs. You can win without him.

ctownvol writes:

I dislike Bama as much as anyone, but if, and I stress IF, this is an isolated case, then the kid is being punished and the agent should get ALL that is coming to him. Now on to more important issues... What kind of meds are you waiting for 987? Anything good? i could go for some Vicodin myself. My back is in the gutter lately!

After your post I checked on this. Check out the illustrious AL Attorney General's “Issues & Controversies” paragraph on his Wikipedia page.

This is going to be like the proverbial "Pot checking on the Kettle" investigation considering what problems he has had. But, no wonder. Look where he got his graduate law degree from. You guessed it! Alabubba!

Quite possibly, but sometimes mountains are made out of molehills. Remember a few weeks ago how Demetrice Morley was an armed robber wanted in Miami only to find out a day later he had done everything required to pay for his crime? It's easy to hear Bama and violation in the same sentence and get giddy like a school kid, but let's make sure what really happened before we judge. I'm just saying.

Penn State has problems of their own. I'm sure every major D1 program has these problem athletes. I'm interested to see what Kiffin does about the rumored 7 or 8 players that have not been to class/failed drug tests. I say get rid of them. I know that both offenses are probably prevalent but the ones that just can't get it right don't deserve the opportunity. That what makes the PacMan Jones of the world.

Coach Kiffin better set the precedent early that failed drug tests and skipping class are unacceptable. Though I respect Coach Fulmer, I felt he needed to be tougher with team discipline. IF the aformentioned rumors true, CLK should send them packing, and open up the scholarship for someone who respects themselves, the program, and the sport.

Not sure this has anything to do with the UA. It appears to be between the Agent and the Ath. so the NCAA may not come into play.
