Kevin VanDerzee, Tennessee’s director of high school relations, is leaving to become the director of football operations at Syracuse, a source close to the situation told the News Sentinel.

VanDerzee is widely credited with helping UT get off to a fast start in recruiting its 2009 class. The Vols were close to 20 commitments late last summer before poor on-field play and a coaching change took its toll.

VanDerzee came to UT a year ago from Richmond along with assistant coaches Dave Clawson and Lattrell Scott. He replaced Gerald Harrison, who left UT for Duke following the 2007 season.

VanDerzee, who graduated from State University of New York at Cortland, was the director of football operations for two seasons at Richmond.
