CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri State fired basketball coach Scott Edgar, who has been on administrative leave since the fall because of possible NCAA violations.
Edgar was an assistant for Bruce Pearl during his first year at Tennessee in 2005-06.
Edgar was 23-39 in his first two seasons at the school, including 12-19 last year. Zac Roman has been the acting coach since Edgar went on leave.
The university said the dismissal took effect Tuesday. Edgar said Wednesday the school bought out the last two years of his five-year contract, but declined to say how much he was paid.
The NCAA informed Southeast Missouri in October of possible major violations concerning the men’s basketball team. The governing body said the NCAA will take up the case at an April 17-18 meeting.
Edgar said he thought the school should have waited until the NCAA process was finished before making such a decision.
“I have always said that the charges that I knowingly broke NCAA rules are false,” he said in a statement.
Interim athletic director Cindy Gannon said it was “important for the university and for coach Edgar to have the opportunity to move forward.” She said the university would have no further comment because this was a personnel matter.

Black mark on an otherwise good resume. May take him a while to shake this one off. I remember when he left how excited a lot of us were that he was getting a chance at a good HC job. Whether he's dirty or just ignorant of the rules, it's a good thing he wasn't here that long.

Accusations and proof of rules violations are two different things. For example, Alabama tossed accusations against Tennessee - Tennessee gave proof of Alabama violations.
Let's not hang the guy when he may not be guilty.
