FLORENCE, Ala. — Terry Bowden, who posted a perfect season in his first year at Auburn but resigned five years later after a 1-5 start, has been named head coach at Division II North Alabama, the school announced Wednesday night.
The 52-year-old Bowden, son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, brings a 111-53-2 record to North Alabama, which finished the 2008 season 12-2 and reached the semifinals of the Division II playoffs.
The school said it would introduce Bowden at a news conference Thursday morning.
Bowden replaces Mark Hudspeth, who left to become an assistant coach at Mississippi State.
Bowden, who won his first 20 games at Auburn in 1993-94, has been working as an analyst on Westwood One’s college game of the week.
The family also includes Tommy Bowden, who quit as Clemson’s coach at midseason in 2008 after a disappointing start.
Terry Bowden was a running back at West Virginia and served as a graduate assistant at Florida State while earning a law degree.
He was head coach at Salem College and Samford before taking over the Auburn program after the 1992 season. After an 11-0 season in 1993, the Tigers were 9-1-1 in 1994.
He resigned in 1998 the day before a game and said he had been pressured to quit. Auburn officials denied applying pressure on Bowden.

all the rumors over the years about Bowden going to D1 schools and he ends up in N Bama? Well, he sinks into oblivion for his tenure there......what's next - Valdosta State?

Why is this story on govolsxtra.com? Adams, this story is not relevant to Vols.

But McCain won the Replican nomination, much to the approval of the press. So that shoul d make you Gator fans happy. You're afraid of losing, and stink like some gator swamp muck!! You smell so bad, no one can hear what you say when you talk.

North Alabama will be a good place to get himself re-acquainted before heading to Gainesville.

This story is about a former SEC coach, who also happens to be a member of one college football's most famous coaching families. Those to reasons alone make it relevant as SEC news.
I don't see why people complain about stories that aren't centered on the Vols being posted on this site. It's not like the internet is limited to a certain number of stories as is the case with the print edition of a paper. If that were the case, and UT stories were getting bumped, I could understand why people were upset.
If you see a headline that doesn't seem to indicate it's directly related to UT, you can always go to the next story.

I don't remember Bowden having a problem with his secretary.
I believe you may be thinking of former Alabama coach Mike DuBose. I think he was the one.

Is this the vertically challenged Bowden?
devault1#205322 writes:
Which one?

This story is relevant because tuscaloosa john heard a rumor that pennington heard from an UT ex-player that Bowden stopped at the Cracker Barrel on Cedar Bluff Rd, ate the Uncle Cracker Mega Breakfast Feast, and left a 25% tip to Myrtle, the four star waitress who Bowden thought was a four star recruit.

UNA is a powerhouse in DII, don't dis the mighty lions!!! at one point they were 39-0 and won 3 national titles. He has realized he has to get back in coaching before he can go back to DI. UNA is a football factory in DII, so it is a natural starting point for him.

Terry Bowden lands a job at a Div.2 school... and still no one wants Fulmer. Hilarious!

This is the real deal. Watch out Vol Nation son of "Wide Right" (or was it left) is going to build a recruiting fence around Pulaski.
rabidvol1998 writes:
Maybe he is positioning himself to take over for CheesNip when he gets fired in a few years.
And yes it was TB and the Secrectary.

Give Fulmer a break. He's holding out for the Detroit Lions job. Win 2 in '09 and get a contract extension. Plus preferred stock in GM. Perfect fit.

You two are brilliant. Making fun of the second winningest UT coach in history and multi-millionaire.
I assume you guys invented the internet and are blogging from some tropical island you bought.

Actually Al Gore bought the island. But it is a nice place to live. Are you lobbying for the chief of security position we have posted all over our internet?

No monetary thing. You think we are stupid? But if you really try hard we will grant you free internet access to our web for life. But you can't go work for Google. That will be in your contract.

That it is and Terry is a very good coach. I have always thought he should get back into coaching. As I remember he was having just one of those years at Auburn. He sure should have won that last game against UT. I was on the edge of the chair the hole game. Lots of luck to Terry. I think we'll see him again in the SEC.

a year off from what?.. he has been doing radio for years now. His brother got kicked from Clemson this year not him...
Wasn't the rumor that Bobby Lowden's daughter was his secretary and he had a fling w/ her? That is my remembrance..
Bama coaches fling was proven out. He was a real looker too.

It's good to see Terry get back into coaching. His career has been a little strange to say the least. I think he's a very good coach and agree that he'll come back up to the big-time if that's what he wants to do.
Hudro writes:
I don't recall anything about a secretary but there were pictures on the internet back then showing him very drunk and had a woman on his lap, etc who was not his wife.
Maybe if they don't have a nepotism policy Terry can hire Tommy who is looking for a job. Tommy was a bust on his first on air segment so I don't think broadcasting is in the works for him.Don't they also have a third brother who was let go by his dad?

Florence is all abuzz today. Even with a good football history, this is big news for this small town.
He was here a couple of weeks ago for ESPN to call the D2 Nat Cham game at UNA, and that just happened to be the day that Coach Hud resigned to go to State. Worked out well as a hire, we'll see how the actual experiment turns out with time.
