Cutcliffe faces off-field issues at Duke

New Duke football coach David Cutcliffe was known as a disciplinarian during his time as assistant coach at Tennessee.

While the Vols have had five players charged by police in less than a month, Cutcliffe is facing is first offseason issue with the Blue Devils.

Two Duke players face misdemeanor charges for an incident at a Durham, N.C., nightclub on Jan. 26.

Officers reported seeing junior wide receiver Eron Riley hit another person. After officers arrested him for fighting, a police report said a "rowdy" crowd of at least 75 people gathered.

The report said officers repeatedly asked the crowd to scatter before arresting freshman wide receiver Austin Kelly for failure to disperse and for resisting and obstructing officers.

Meanwhile, linebacker Michael Tauiliili has avoided jail time by pleading guilty to simple assault and driving while impaired.

Tauiliili was given a 60-day suspended sentence Thursday and 12 months of unsupervised probation. He also was ordered to perform 24 hours of community service and pay $170 in fines and court costs.

Court records show Tauiliili got into an altercation after a car accident in August and was accused of pointing a carbon dioxide-powered pistol. Police said he also had a concealed knife.

Who cares...

Enjoy playing in front of 12,000 people Cut. Anyone want tickets to see Cut/Puke next season? They are currently selling for $90...not per game, per SEASON!

According to some who have posted previously, this kind of thing only occurs in KnoxVegas.

Not surprising. Duke players are used to hitting just about anything except their opponent. Coach Cutt has his work cutt out for himself.

Wait.... this didn't happen at TN? Fulmer is not their coach and they still broke the law? How can that be? Damn.... everyone on this site had me finally, and fully convinced that all of the 2*& 3* thugs and convicts lived in Knoxville and played ball for UT...both in football and men's basketball.... damn....the world is not flat afterall!!!

Trouble at another university? That can't be so. We all know only Fulmer and the Vols make stupid decisions.

Looks like the death sentence to me. Where's Nifong when you actually need him?

I heard Rev Al Sharpton was going to intervene and Rev. Jessie Jackson has already convicted Cutcliffe of bringing this "criminal attitude" with him from Tennessee.

Yet another story about the Duke WhoDevils, what gives?

Posted by chrisw2967 on February 4, 2008 at 6:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well he cant suspend any players at Duke , if he does he wont have enough players to put on the field.
make them get up at 10am and run the stadium steps, that should take a whole 2 minutes.

And David Cutcliffe is the h/c WHERE???? Funny, I thought he left Tennessee. Does anybody know where you can find news about Tennessee??? I REALLY don't care about the Puke Devils and any jump ship coaches.. GO VOLS!!!!

Hey, don't mess with those Duke players, they'll pull your hair and scratch your eyes out. Besides, they were probably just defending themselves from those girl scouts.

I'm kinds glad Cut is over here in Raleigh. I can follow him by driving 10 miles when I don't drive 300+ to see my VOLS..Good food in their stadium and no wait in lines!

That said, cannot beat NEYLAND...but the dogs suck

This wasn't a lacrosse team party, was it?

Posted by chrisw2967 on February 4, 2008 at 10:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ncvol17 :Id much rather drive 300 miles to watch the Vols play than 10 miles to watch Puke play period and the reason there is no wait in line for food cause you will probably be the only one there.
but good luck to you.

Duke has a football team?

Posted by wewhite on February 5, 2008 at 9:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Like any of Cut's players at Duke can compete with the "professional" troublemakers that he had here at UT. The quantity of problems he's going to see over there will be commensurate with the quantity of wins his team will get... namely, very few.

Coach Cuttcliffe has been great for the Vols, and I would think that he has the support of the school and his staff to deal with the problems as they arise. Best of luck to you coach!
