Tennessee senior defensive back Antonio Gaines will get a sixth year of eligibility after injuring his knee early in the 2007 season.
Brad Bertani, Tennessee’s associate athletics director for compliance, said Thursday that the NCAA has granted Gaines an extension to let him play this fall so long as he “meets all progress-toward-degree requirements.”
Gaines already was playing on extended eligibility when he tore a knee ligament in the second game of the 2007 season against Southern Mississippi. He’d taken a medical redshirt as a freshman in 2003 after surgery to repair an injury from high school.
Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said in November that the Covington, Tenn., native deserved an extension. “Antonio Gaines will get his year back. That’s cut and dry,” Fulmer said then.
