Vols waiting on status of transfer pitcher

A new-look University of Tennessee baseball team went through media day Thursday at new-look Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

While fresh coats of paint were being applied to the stadium, first-year UT coach Todd Raleigh was busy trying to put the pieces in place for a team trying to replace first-round draft choices JP Arencibia, Julio Borbon and James Adkins.

One potential key cog is still in limbo.

Former University of Pacific pitcher Ty’Relle Harris is on campus and attending classes as a mid-term transfer, but he’s still awaiting official clearance to be added to the team.

“It’s a transcript issue and we hope it’s just logistics,” Raleigh said. “He’s here in school, but we’re just waiting and hoping for him to be cleared.”

Harris went 4-5 with a 5.97 ERA as a freshman at Pacific. He was dismissed from the team as a sophomore after being cited with misdemeanor battery and vandalism at a late-night altercation off campus in January of 2007.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound righthander subsequently transferred to Sacramento City College and then to UT this semester.

Harris is not listed on the roster and hasn’t been allowed to participate in preseason practices. With Adkins gone and Craig Cobb graduated, Raleigh’s hoping Harris can add depth to the pitching rotation.

First baseman/closer Jeff Lockwood mentioned Harris possibly providing help to a staff led by Illinois-Chicago transfer Steve Crnkovich, sophomore Nick Hernandez, redshirt freshman Bryan Morgado and junior Aaron Everett.

“I think the staff as a whole is going to be a lot deeper,” Lockwood said. "We have a new guy, Ty’Relle Harris, coming in from California and if we get a few guys step up I think we’ll be very competitive.”

The Vols are two weeks away from opening the season against Morehead State on Feb. 22.
