Ashton Ward is making this whole college softball thing look easy.
The Tennessee freshman won for the second time in two days at the Cathedral City (Calif.) Kickoff on Saturday.
Ward led the No. 6-ranked Lady Vols (3-0) with a complete-game, one-hit, 5-0 victory against 20th-ranked Oregon.
The 6-foot righthander struck out eight and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a two-out single up the middle.
UT also got some help from a shaky Oregon defense and its five errors.
When the Ducks weren’t dropping the ball, junior left fielder Lillian Hammond and sophomore right fielder Erinn Webb were each going 3-for-4 in the Lady Vols’ nine-hit attack.
UT scored two unearned runs in the first to set the tempo. Two more unearned insurance runs came in the fifth and Kendra Posey had an RBI single in the sixth.
The Lady Vols played Cal-Poly late Saturday and conclude their West Coast road trip with a 12:30 p.m. game today against Oregon State.
Late Friday, it was senior pitcher Megan Rhodes who had a complete-game victory in UT’s 5-2 comeback victory against UC-Davis. Rhodes struck out 11.
Freshman designated hitter Jen Lapicki hit her first collegiate homer and senior third baseman Tonya Callahan hit the go-ahead, two-run single in the fourth.
