Some familiar faces are gone, but the results don’t seem to change for the University of Tennessee softball team.
The No. 6-ranked Lady Vols opened the 2008 season with an 8-0, five-inning victory against Utah State on Friday in the Cathedral City Kickoff at Palm Springs, Calif.
Freshman Ashton Ward did her best impersonation of graduated All-American Monica Abbott by picking up her debut victory with three innings of one-hit pitching.
Junior Danielle Pieroni finished the game in relief, striking out three and giving up two hits in two innings.
Offensively, senior third baseman Tonya Callahan crushed a three-run homer and freshman first baseman Jen Lapicki added a two-run triple to spark a six-run third inning for the Lady Vols.
Tennessee cranked out an 11-hit attack led by leadoff hitter Kenora Posey. The senior shortstop went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and gave the Lady Vols a 1-0 lead when she scored on a wild pitch in the first.
Lapicki was 2-for-3 with the triple and a run scored. Designated hitter Shannon Doepking also went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
The Lady Vols had a late game Friday against UC-Davis.
UT plays Oregon (3:30 p.m.) and Cal-Poly (9 p.m.) today. UT concludes the West Coast trip against Oregon State (12:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
