Addy ties Gault for third best time in 60 hurdles

Tennessee celebrated its climb to a No. 1-ranking in men's track and field with a big day at the New Balance Invitational in New York City on Friday.

Senior captain Jangy Addy and senior Chris Platt set personal-best marks in their respective events and Rubin Williams and Evander Wells scorched the prelims in the 60-meter run.

Addy ran the 60 hurdles in 7.67, the best time in the NCAA this season and tied with Willie Gault for third-best time in UT history. He was then disqualified by a false start in the finals. Addy also went 24 feet, 81<0x2044>4 inches for first in the long jump.

Platt won the 3,000 in 8:14.34.

Williams and Wells ran identical 6.64 runs in the 60 prelims. Williams finished fifth in the finals (6.69) and Wells was eighth (6.74).

Women's Track: The No. 2-ranked Lady Vols got another NCAA Indoor qualifying mark in the distance medley relay at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.

UT posted the second fastest time in the nation this season and the fourth-best in school history with a comeback victory in 11:07.89.

Sophomore Phoebe Wright ran the third-leg 800 and took the Lady Vols from third to first. Junior All-American Sarah Bowman took it from there, giving UT a seven-second lead in the final 1,600. Freshman Brittany Sheffey ran the opening 1,200 and freshman Brittany Jones had the 400 second leg.

"All four legs ran well," UT coach J.J. Clark said. "Definitely, Phoebe ran a great leg to put us into position, and then Sarah showed her consistency and dominance on the anchor by running a nice mile. It's good to see them work together as a unit and look very good."

Junior Courtney Champion won the 60 in a season-best time of 7.32. She also took first in the 200 (23.77).

Men's Tennis: The 16th-ranked Vols improved to 7-0, their best start since 1995, with a 5-2 victory at Louisville.

Freshman Matteo Fago clinched the win with a victory at No. 5 singles. Fago and Jeremy Tweedt also clinched the Vols' doubles point with a victory at No. 3. J.P. Smith, Boris Conkic, and Chris Racz were other UT winners in singles.

Women's Swimming: Christine Magnuson, who was named SEC women's swimmer of the week for her three individual victories and swim on a winning relay against Florida on Feb. 1, also has been chosen National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week by Swimming World Magazine.

A much under-hyped program @ UT.
Consistently one of our best performing sports.
Congrats on #1 ranking men/#2 ranking women.
Like Oregon--we should pack Tom Black when these teams are on display.

Why do we have to have track articles under the "Other Sports" category? Why can't we have a section just for track and field -- the most successful sport we have at UT when measured by SEC and NCAA titles??? Mike Strange, take care of this!
